When will nintendo learn that games centered on the mario-esque cast of characters aren't always enough.

When their consoles stop being profitable in the long-run?

They are always going to be profitable. But that is not because people are still gaga over anything Mario. Sure, my kids want mario lunch boxes, toys, games, movies, etc. But the problem with kids, is they cannot go and buy their own stuff usually. They depend on Parents to do this, which for some, could be Birthdays and Christmas. You have to get adults hooked as well. Sure, you have the life long fan, but when you have kids with attention spans that can only accept CoD, you cannot put the same looking MArio out month after month.

What have you seen that has been incredibly original or different with recent Marios? Nothing? Maybe a few concepts here or there, but do the games look the same to jo shmoe who is 22 years old? Probably not. They like mario, but are not willing to fork out money for a system when it looks like the same thing they already have on the Wii, which they confused for the Wii U for half of the Wii U's life span.

Since you're stuck on Mario, how about I rephrase my point.

When Mario games stop selling over 10m each?

Lol, you win! It is an amazing phenomenon. Mario is crazy popular. I cannot deny that. But your answer for that may be the latest NSMB U game. I am sure that legs will push it towards at least Sunshine levels as the system ages though.

NSMBU will still reach 15m+ when its all said and done easily. Hell, NSLU may even make 10m+.

Fact is, Nintendo does just fine for Nintendo. Wii was a bright spot in their history and its not just Wii that has proven over and over again that games/content will  push any hardware regardless of power perception as all of their handhelds have always been weaker than their competition too.

Wii U simply doesn't have that line-up yet to push its unique hardware. Once it does, 2014 and onwards will be starkly different from 2013/12.

Wii was a casual fad and that crowed is long gone and never cared about Nintendo in the first place. The reason Nintendo won this gen is because of the 360 slowing the PlayStation dominance and cutting the fan base in half. If MS did not make the 360 Nintendo would have got steam rolled by Sony and completely destroyed even with the casuals on Nintendo's side, like they always have when facing Sony. Nintendo you owe everything to MS, and the Wii U is just chickens coming home to roost and a return to the norm

That makes no fucking sense.

What can't you comprehend Sony destroyed Nintendo every generation until 360  split the PlayStation fanbase, if MS  did not do that Sony would have ass raped Nintendo again with over 140 million consoles sold not to mention 1st and 3rd party sales. Are you not reading or are you not comprehending?

Now take a gander at my sig because you just got that work

That is never going to happen considering they never have losses on them.

Then why do they need to learn a lesson?

So you admit that Sony and Microsoft's ability to grow the gaming market is, at best, negligible, and that their only competition is a zero-sum game involving hurting each other?

In other words, we don't listen to what our fans want, we just do our own thing.

Mario by himself doesn't win a console generation. By providing mario games as well as new ips and experiences they can attract bigger audiences and make more profit.

ROl beat me to it, but being port buddies with 360 is what helped pulled PS3 out of it's bad sales.

And even if that wasn't the case, how would Sony have stopped the wiimote and wiisports/Wiifit etc from making Wii the success it was? It wouldn't.

Offering something new,  different and exciting is what made the Wii what it was and 360 or no 360 the PS3 wouldn't have changed that.

Also, make sure you've actually won an argument before gloating about someone "getting that work".

It's funny because their Wii U is nothing like the Wii, except for being shiny and white.

I'm also happy Iwata didn't say this, he's had enough criticism for a little while.

I don't have a problem with Nintendo doing their own thing, in fact I admire them for not getting caught up in hardware wars with tech giants like Microsoft and Sony. They cannot play the console wars the same way. So they don't.

I just wish Nintendo would be more mindful of how their audience has changed over the years. They pushed the Wii U as a hardcore console, then produced titles like Mario and Pikmin. These are good games, but they cannot push hardware to that particular audience. You need Zelda and X for the "hardcore" audience: you can release Mario midlife.

Nintendo's first party portfolio is majorly lacking. Mario is good for the 3DS, maybe, but for the Wii U? The traditional Nintendo IP won't cut it. They need more RPG's, they need a AAA horror franchise, they need an MMO.
