Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo: We Have A History Of Doing Our Own Thing, For Better Or For Worse

Nintendo’s Business Development Manager, Dan Adelman, admits that the company has a habit of doing their own thing, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse. However, he is extremely confident that sales of the Wii U will improve given the steady number of high-profile first party titles coming to the platform in the coming months.

“We often don’t compare ourselves to other consoles. We have a history of doing our own thing, for better or for worse,” he says. “We’ve had quite a bit of success not necessarily following the competition – for example, last generation with Wii, everyone was thinking it’s all about graphics horsepower and CPU horsepower and high-end graphics and shaders, and I think the Wii successfully demonstrated that no, it’s really all about gameplay and what kinds of new types of gameplay can you create, what new experiences can you create. Beauty fades.”

“I think we’d all like to see our install base grow a little bit faster, and I think we’ll see that when our holiday lineup comes up. I think a lot of developers are waiting on that. But so far, among the existing install base, purchases are pretty healthy and demand is pretty healthy, in that install base community.”

When will nintendo learn that games centered on the mario-esque cast of characters aren't always enough.

In other words, we don't listen to what our fans want, we just do our own thing.

When their consoles stop being profitable in the long-run?

That is never going to happen considering they never have losses on them.

" really all about gameplay and what kinds of new types of gameplay can you create, what new experiences can you create."

If that was the lesson they took from the Wii I feel sorry for them.

I think when Nintendo makes their next consoles, they'll start focusing on 3rd Parties and powerful hardware. They took a huge risk with the Wii U and its hurting them.

Wii was a casual fad and that crowed is long gone and never cared about Nintendo in the first place. The reason Nintendo won this gen is because of the 360 slowing the PlayStation dominance and cutting the fan base in half. If MS did not make the 360 Nintendo would have got steam rolled by Sony and completely destroyed even with the casuals on Nintendo's side, like they always have when facing Sony. Nintendo you owe everything to MS, and the Wii U is just chickens coming home to roost and a return to the norm

Without order nothing can exist - without chaos nothing can evolve.

In other words, we don't listen to what third parties want from our console and let our fans bitch and whine when they skip our console

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

That makes no fucking sense.
