I wonder how the series would turn out if Squaresoft never merged with Enix.

Stop. SE current situation has NOTHING to do with it's merger. When the merge happened ALL of the Sqaure staff took the lead roles. The fall of SE was Wada's atempt go make the company a Japanese EA( came out of his own mouth) plus the general horrible management.

Very well said ! I might add that the huge loss of talented people (entire Teams left Square, Alpha Dream Monolith Soft, the Mana Team and many many individuals including Sakaguchi) and the fatal blow by the failure that was The Spirits Within are reasons for the downfall too.

The Enix side is actually doing quite decently, the Dragon Quest games are still well regarded and sell by the truckloads....with the exception being DQ X, the MMO that nobody wanted...

Think the "read between the lines" message here is that dead = in decline

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I haven't really enjoyed a Final Fantasy since Final Fantasy X back in 2001. I've tolerated a couple until the end but I never even finished XII or XIII-2 and I skipped the MMO's (which, in my opinion shouldn't have been numbered titles). I'll still probably end up buying XIII-3 out of force of habit but the whole thing reminds me of Tomb Raider in the 90's. It keeps selling based on the name and not the quality of the product. Prove me wrong, Square.

The last great Final Fantasy I've played was called Lost Odyssey.

One thing I dislike about the latest Final Fantasy games is the character designs direction. They series gradually lost their original character design direction in favor of a cast of character which look look more suited to be working in a Host/Hostess clubs than trying to save the world.

I have 3 Final Fantasy games pre-ordered right now.

Well, it’s been a long time coming, but I think I’m gonna call it: Final Fantasy is dead.

I've called this five years ago.  If I knew the last good Final Fantasy aside from 10-2 was going to be 9, I would have called it back in 2001, but I kept giving them a chance, then after Crisis Core which was "okay" I was like.  Yeah.  The Final Fantasy we used to know and love is gone.  All it is now is amazing graphics, sub par gameplay, and a storyline that's hit or miss per cutscene.

a series is dead when few or no one care/s about it. last time i checked, there are a lot of ff lovers and haters. so it's far from being dead. also if it really were dead why writing an article about it?
