Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation 4 gives up to 5.5GB of RAM to game developers

Even if it's true, how is it a bad thing? If the OS uses 3.5GB, how exactly is that bad?

I think you focused too much reading and replying to master chiefs loling :)

It is not a bad thing. It is actually a good thing, 4.5GB is way enough for games... Having that amount of ram reserved for the PS4 OS means that background operations/applications are going to be running smootlhy and allow more things to be done (vocal chat, video chat?, stuff like that).

No offense but that's your own damn fault then.  You let people who know nothing about tech convince you that it would have 7GB and now you're underhyped because now there is a new "RUMOR" about the OS allocation being larger which wasn't confirmed to begin with.

The problem is this was on websites as news not as a rumor. It was the websites that took that rumer as fact reported it like that.

And I totally get that.  Maybe now you should just make sure something is confirmed before believing it.  It's probably the best thing to do with anything.  It's avoids you being disappointed.  Anywho it's your opinion though and I can respect that.

My point exactly. They loled at 1GB for OS and said OS would be shit. Now the lol at 3.5GB. Has it really come down to actually grabbing any info we can and putting a this is shit spin to it

4.5GB sounds like more than enough, hopefully this means the OS has plenty of extra features which could give PS4 a boost, we'll really have to wait until gamescon to know whats really going on

I'm not even sure it's 3.5GB allocated to the OS.  It sounds like 2.5GB is reserved with another 1GB reserved for dev use if they need it.  So as of now they have 5.5GB available for games if need be which should be enough for 5 years and then Sony can unlock more if devs demand it.  This is why I hate rumors though because people go batshit crazy over speculation.

Don't get your hopes up for Sony to confirm or deny this rumor now. :-p  Has sony or MS ever commented on RAM OS allocation for any of their consoles?  Best case scenario though is devs could potentially get 6GB-6.5GB if sony can keep the OS footprint at 1.5 or less which I personally think will be plenty till the next gen after.

I agree with you. 4.5 GB of GDDR5 ram is waaay more than enough for devs. This gen they only had 256 MB and look at the type of games they were able to produce.

Generally speaking, companies deny or refute negative publicity or have someone else do it (i.e. a developer).

If you don't cut-off negative publicity, it tends to get away from you and out of hand.  Usually you get in front of it, and control it.

Sony hasn't come out and flatly denied it.  Nor have any surrogates.  In fact, they've let this run the news cycle without comment and it'll have all weekend to fester.  Generally, and I'm being serious not hyperbolic, that's not a good thing to do.

Microsoft let the Digital Library/DRM thing get out from under them, and when they didn't get out in front of the issue and try to control it, it completely got away from them where no matter what they tried to say or do, it fell on deaf ears.

This isn't as serious as the DRM issue was for Microsoft, but I don't think Sony should discount it completely.  I'm sure they're talking to devs, so that may be the only sphere they really care about conveying the information to right now.  I just think eventually they have to say something to the general public.

The freaking out is beyond crazy and is ridiculous.

The Xbox One and Playstation 4 are fighting a system features battle along with the battle for the game library.
