Bulky, underdeveloped as a tablet controller, awkward button positioning and terrible battery life. It's not a hopeless controller per say, but as far as Nintendo controllers go, I think it's their worst so far. Then again, Nintendo controllers are usually terrific.

Bulky, could have better battery life = yes. Everything else you said = merely opinion.
How is the button positioning awkward? The buttons are face buttons are laid out exactly as the SNES was, the L/R buttons are right there on top, comfortably reached by index fingers, with the L2/R2 equally comfortable to reach with middle fingers. Analog and d-pad placement are great. Start and select could be placed elsehwhere, but where? The only way I could see them being improved, is if they were placed next to each other horizontal instead of vertical. And it's not "underdeveloped as a tablet" because it's NOT a tablet. It was never meant or intended to BE a tablet. It's just a giant touch screen, that also acts as a second screen, similar to what DS has had for years. Single touch input is fine, because the idea of the GamePad is NOT to be a tablet, to have touch be the only imput the device has. It's a regular game controller, WITH a touch screen. That also doubles as a really nice, perfectly sized off-tv play screen.
The controller is bulky, yes, but I think it's a fair trade off for the size and functionality of the screen, and everything else the controller brings to the table.
