Forums - Sales - "Sony cut the PS3 price twice" line is getting old... Read and find out why

So, just a sumarize as the stupid mario galaxy person wanted:

A price cut is only a price cut to a specific item.
A new SKU is not a price cut.
Therefore, in the 1 year and 2 months the PS3 has been out, there have been 2 price cuts. Ignoring Japan. Who don't matter anyway.

However, it's quite easy to think of things as:
Sony wants people to buy their PS3 (brand)
Sony will introduce stripped down versions with their prices cut to get those people.
Sony has therefore introduced multiple price cuts through different versions in an attempt to get more users under the PS3 brand.

And thus it is stated for those who firmly believe that every PS3 SKU is unique and special, and those who don't. Neither are really wrong either, just a perspective thing.

"Not trying to flame, but when Sony axed the 20gb, as you stated, they dropped the 60gb to $499."

No they didn't. They officially discontinued the 20GB in the U.S. quite some time before they dropped the price of the 60GB, and they stopped providing them to stores months before they even officially declared it.

"How can that be just one price cut?"

Is $20 off the Core, $50 off the Pro, and $30 off the Elite one pricecut? They are different SKUs, just like the 60GB and 80GB, and the only difference was timing and the shuffling of the SKUs.

The truth is, 80GB REPLACED the 60GB. The 60GB went on clearance price so it'd disappear. The 40GB replaced the 20GB. Not the 60GB. The PS3 has had one high end SKU and one low end SKU in the U.S. for the majority of its existance. The 40GB simply replaced the ($500) low end SKU.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

Sony cut the price of the 60 gb ps3 by $100
Then we had the 80gb's price drop $100 after the 40gb was announced.

That would make it 2 price cuts.

Then ofcourse if you look at it differently:

$599.99
$499.99

price cut

$499.99
$399.99

This would make it seem like 1 price cut has occured.

 2008 end of year predictions:

PS3: 22M

360: 25M

wii: 40M

@ madskills

I am not a PS3 owner, I do like PS3, but I have an XBOX 360 and love it. Not to say that I don't want a PS3, cause I do, but I just hate seeing this same argument over and over again. They did do two price-cuts. on two separate models. Much like MS did three over three different models. But I only made this thread because it makes people sound so uninformed when they cannot make sense of the prices. It was two separate price dorps on two models, it is two price cuts, technically, but the lowest asking price for the PS3 was five hundred, and now it's four hundred. So while two price drops it was, it is only a hundred dollar difference from last year to this year.

Thanks, I did write it myself

Let's see

First Sony dropped the 20GB(not a prce cut)
Than Sony lowered the price fo the 60GB to be discontinued(Clearance or Price Cut #1?)
Concurrently Sony introduced the 80GB model for $599(not a price cut but introduction)
than Sony dropped the price of the 80GB to $499(official Price Cut#1 techinically price cut #2)
Concurrently they introduced a $399 model(not a price cut but technically price cut #3)

Sony changed the price on a lot of skus and models through out the course of the Year but techically only one had a true price cut. The other price crop(60GB was a clearance though also a price cut since the price was reduced and the 40GB was a new model so again not a price cut but it was technically a price cut for teh entry level model.) In effect Sony has had 3 price cuts this year arguing otherwise is just playing with PR semantics.

But they did cut the price twice.

It's clear as crystal, but that won't stop people insisting that Sony slashed the price by $200. I'll wager that line is used at least once a day on these forums.

FJ-Warez said:
MS did one price cut across all the models at the same time, Sony did two price cuts with months between each other... you can try to spin it whatever you want, but thats two price cuts... vs one...

So, by your logic the 360 Arcade also qualifies as a price cut. Both the 40Gb and the 360 Arcade are new SKUs, they are not price cuts. Both the PS3 60Gb and the 80Gb got a $100 price cut. But the 20Gb and the 40Gb never got a price cut.

Also, the bundle with 2 games is in theory a $60-100 price cut too...

Anyway, who cares how many price cuts Sony did? What really matters is that they are back in the race with some good momentum and a nice line up for 2008. Also don't forget the PS3 was launched at a ridiculous price and had to come down faster than the 360 or the Wii.

Optimistic predictions for 2008 (Feb 5 2008): Wii = 20M, PS3 = 14M, X360 = 9.5M

Sony axed both 20gb and the 60gb. There were just a lot of 60gb left so they had to have a clearance sale. If you want to call it 2 price cuts to make your argument look better, then fine.

But the PS3 models have only dropped $100, and they have cut more than $400 off the production price.

the 360 has had 3 price cuts, and has had 5 different units. with 3 currently active.

the ps3 has had "2" price cuts, sold 4 different units, with 2 currently active.
