It's pretty typical from the top down.  I think it is petty and turns many people off.  But some people like a 'cut throat win at all cost’ kind of approach.  Some fans just reflect the style of what the management at the top does (publicly.)

Inside the company many people are like that too.  People will try to destroy someone else, if it helps them look better or makes their department look bigger in return.  There is a film about it, give me a day or two to remember what it is.

Jack was really insecure.  If one believes you can’t win at being great, sometimes one will attack to attempt to bring down the competition. It’s usually smoke and mirror, and sometimes works, sometimes backfires dramatically.

The success or failure of the Steam Machines really depends on what they can get out of their SteamOS that they are making that is sort of like DirectX.  It's VERY ambitious.  I haven’t seen them produce something yet that is going to pull the industry to their platform – which is seems what Gabe wants to do.  He will either lead a revolution, or kill/get kick out of Valve. 

Just yesterday they release their specs for switching between DirectX 9 to OpenGL on their Source Engine.  While that's nice and all, DirectX 9 came out in 2002 and I'm not sure how relevant it is to today's games.

Many people are talking about a dual boot with Windows.  As the machines would be nice windows machines.  So the questions is, why bother with SteamOS at all?
