Enabling your XBox ONe to Developer Settings can Brick your Console

Enabling the Xbox One developer settings can brick your console, Microsoft has warned, after a video from GameTuts showed how a few button presses could turn the system into a "dev kit."

"Changing the settings in this menu is only intended for developers for Xbox One, and this alone does not turn the console into a development kit," Microsoft said in a statement provided to Engadget. "We strongly advise consumers against changing these settings as it could result in their Xbox One becoming unusable."

Those who have already enabled the developer settings on their Xbox One can revert by restoring factory defaults. This can be done by selecting "Restore Factory Defaults" in the settings menu.

Looking ahead, Microsoft's long-term goal is to officially enable every Xbox One console to be used as a development kit, though it is not clear when this will happen.

Black Friday Infoscout Numbers

The Xbox One was the best-selling console at Wal-Mart and Target on Black Friday, according to data from retail analytics firm InfoScout. Writing on the company's official blog, the firm said Microsoft's new system made up 31 percent of all console sales, outperforming the PS4 handily, which took in 15 percent of sales and was the fourth best-selling console on Black Friday.

InfoScout says the Xbox 360, which benefited from a $99 sale price on the 4GB version at Wal-Mart, finished second overall. The 12GB PlayStation 3 was marked down to $150 at Wal-Mart and finished third overall, capturing 15 percent of overall sales across Wal-Mart and Target.

Nintendo finished last, with the Wii U ranking fifth with 6 percent of sales, while the original Wii brought up the rear with 1 percent of all sales across Wal-Mart and Target. Data for handhelds like the Nintendo 3DS and 2DS and PlayStation Vita was not included.

The Xbox platform's dominance was partially attributed to limited availability of the PS4 on Black Friday combined with the deep Xbox 360 discount, InfoScout said.

What's more, the Xbox One was the sixth best-selling item overall at Wal-Mart, according to a survey of 5,000 Black Friday receipts from InfoScout. Microsoft's new console was outpaced by three HDTVs, the iPad Mini, and an HP laptop. Also making Wal-Mart's top twenty list were the Xbox 360 (8), PlayStation 3 (11), Call of Duty: Ghosts for Xbox 360 (12), PlayStation 4 (16), and Nintendo 2DS (18).

InfoScout also released a list of top-performing software for Wal-Mart and Target, with multiplayer shooter Call of Duty: Ghosts leading the way on Black Friday. Check out the full list below.

  1. Call of Duty: Ghosts
  2. Disney Infinity
  3. Skylanders: SWAP Force
  4. Grand Theft Auto V
  5. Madden NFL 25
  6. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
  7. Batman: Arkham Origins
  8. NBA 2K14
  9. Lego: Marvel Super Heroes
  10. Assassin's Creed: Revelations
  11. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  12. FIFA 14
  13. NCAA Football 14
  14. Super Mario 3D Land
  15. WWE 2K14
  16. Call of Duty IV: Modern Warfare
  17. The Last of Us
  18. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  19. Killzone: Shadow Fall
  20. Batman: Arkham City

InfoScout's data is based on patent-pending technologies that extract shoppers' item-level purchase data from receipt images sent to the company. Results are demographically weighted and balanced to deliver a "projectable" sample of United States buying behavior, which is not necessarily the same as "representative."

Hey if anyone is getting those mountain dew and doritos bags with the codes that you can enter on your account and use them to bid on a X1 and isn't using those codes could you send them my way? My brother is trying to get enough points to bid on an X1 so any help that he can get would be greatly appreciated.

I'm glad Angry Birds Star Wars didn't sell very well. That game is a rip-off if ever I saw one. $50 for a glorified cell phone game is pure madness.

Zoo Tycoon numbers are depressingly low though...definitely deserves better sales (I haven't played it but I know it should get more) than that and hopefully it ends up having good legs and legs it to a couple hundred thousand.

XBONE probably did outsell PS4 on BF since we have tons of store workers saying they received more units. Those anecdotal accounts though have way more merit than the silly graphs that infoscout put out. The news has been posted about a million times by now, but every article has infoscout as the source. This is like the tenth (slightly exaggerated) time a user has posted this news in the thread. You even posted it (just the target half) here and already commented about both the target and wall-mart numbers here. That's fine but there's nothing new or interesting about it. People need to think about the things they say sometime ;)

Wow, didn't expect that. Limited availability of PS4 or not, their own deal with Walmart was a expert play that really capitalized on this. Black market domination for Xbox. :)
