Forums - Politics - Greenpeace

Greenpeace is an enviromental organisation but i'm sure most of you have heard of them because of their campaigns and peaceful protests as well as publicity stunts. They focus on a wide range of environmental issues like oil drilling in the arctic, deforestation, fracking and many others and try to get the message about the damage done to the Earth by TNC's and governments across the world.

Today, in London 6 of their members climbed the Shard (tallest building in the UK) to get publicity on the Arctic and the possibility of companies like Shell going their to drill oil despite all the risks of stuff like oil spills and disruption to polar bears. It aimed to get people to stop oil companies from drilling in the Arctic and whether it worked has yet to be seen. But for some reason, i respect the pressure group because their members are willing to risk their own lives just to get a message across and raise awareness. It certainly made people aware of what's happening. This is very important as how we deal with environmental issues now will massively affect our quality of life and our national economies in the near and far future. That is part of why i share this, as i value the environment as one of if not the most important issue we must understand and deal with.

Their actions may be a nuisance to some, but they are straight to the point and educate people about what matters in this wide ranging issue

It isn't perfect but with enough people, great things can be accomplished.

Finally, what do you think of greenpeace?

Greenpeace climbed the Shard to stop drilling for oil. Fair enough. How did they travel to the Shard? If they used any method of transport that uses fossil fuels they are hypocrites.

They climb some buildings-yeah,they try to save some whales-wow.
But they don't do a shit to protest against the depleted uranium ammo the US Army is using to poison the world and people with radioactivity.Large Areas in former yugoslavia, iraq, lybia etc were contaminated but they don't give a shit(seems they are on the us/un payrole.
Those guys maybe green, but they have absolutely nothing to do with peace, therefore they should no longer use the word peace. They'd rather save one tree then 1mio human beings therefore .

well-as long as they keep on fighting gmo they have my sympathy but either they change their name or they start to do something for peace.

1. They can hardly focus on every tradegy can they? They are just 1 organisation. One battle at a time.

2. What's so violent about them? I have never seen anything bad about them and also the companies they expose are far worse than them. You can hardly defend any TNC after you see what they really do to make so much profit.

Finally, whatever you think of them. It's better than someone is doing something. I mean why should we continue to rape our seas of wildlife just for some short sighted profits? Why should we continue to burn our forests and continue to kill off any biodiversity this wonderful planet has? Why should we exploit this planet for everything it has, especially as we have the technology now to be less wasteful. There has to be away to live in an advanced way but without fucking the planet over not just for the wildlife, but our future generations.

I will refer to Patrick Moore's criticisms on the group. They are more focused on politics than science.

Like all these emotion driven groups that focus on exploiting the human desire for self importance I take their positions with a grain of salt.

I really wish they'd focus on researching and finding solutions to global poverty than going on about the politics.

No, seriously. The first world nations they like protesting in are actually remarkably clean, and they keep their environment well maintained. By and large there's not much to complain about with them. The poor, underdeveloped nations around the world, though, are absolutely disgusting.

A clean environment is an expensive economic good, one that most economies around the world can't afford. The best way to improve the environment, therefore, is to resolve global poverty first.

1)are you kidding?
they can't focus on every tragedy? this depleted uranium tragedy is going on for almost 2 decades! They had all the time in the world to react and depleted uranium(one method to
get rid of atomic waste, meanwhile estimated 2500tons)this is not a little thing and has already caused a lot of damage.
huge areas are contamined for the next 1millon years and more(this is fucking up the planet for future genetations, sir) but they still have the time to save 20 fucking whales in japan year after year after year.

instead of defending them you should ask yourself:why they stopped to act for peace like they did. There were many wars in the past decades, there are many dictators that should be exposed but aren"t by our western countries as they are useful for them.
Greenpeace has a strong influential name but they don't use it.
Maybe guys like you are happy when they climb a building, but if you have a bazooka to tear down a wall don't throw with stones.Greenpeace know exactly that they can become more powerful and famous my acting against wars-the question is:why don't they do it?
And please:don't be so naiv to think that someone who has every year the time and the empathy to save some whales does not have the time to protest against war. This is like fixing the broken window on the east side of your house while ignoring at the same time that the complete wall of the north side was destroyed.
This does make no sense.

Politics and shoveling the majority of donations they get straight into their pockets.
