SEGA and Nintendo built themselves on thier AMAZING first party content. There was much more of a reason to own both consoles and to be envious of people who owned the one you didn't have.
Answers will largely depend on how old you are.
That being said, Nintendo vs Sega was far more brutal, vicious and entertaining than anything I've seen in over a decade of Sony vs MS.
