SALES/PLAYER COUNTS & DEALS

Despite limping on Steam charts with a 24-hour peak of less than 200, FBC: Firebreak hits 1 million players milestone—and, let's face it, it's probably Game Pass
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/despite-limping-on-steam-charts-with-a-24-hour-peak-of-less-than-200-fbc-firebreak-hits-1-million-players-milestone-and-lets-face-it-its-probably-game-pass/
Remedy's latest multiplayer shooter has… uh, not done particularly well for itself, if the Steam numbers are anything to go by. At the time of writing, the game has a 24-hour peak player count of 169 (no, I did not miss a digit) and a 'mixed' rating on Steam. Critically speaking, we gave it 60% in our FBC: Firebreak review, and having bounced off it like a rubber ball, I can't argue with that assessment.
When it comes to the overall player numbers—that is, people who have played it? Remedy's in better nick. As per the game's X account, over one million people have given FBC: Firebreak a try.
It seems like the game's saving grace is, if I were to take a guess, Game Pass—I mean, it's out on consoles and the Epic game store, too, but let's face it. It's probably Game Pass. Maybe Firebreak is super popular on the Microsoft Xbox Series X or something, but I'd be willing to bet good money on my hunch, here.
>> The all-time peak on Steam isn’t much better, only 1,992 players.

The Humble Store has four new sales:

It's not just you—Steam is getting absolutely crushed under the Summer Sale
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/its-not-just-you-steam-is-getting-absolutely-crushed-under-the-summer-sale/
Most of us have been down this road before, but in case you have not, don't be too concerned if you're struggling to load pages or wring search results out of Steam right now: The Summer Sale kicked off an hour ago, and the whole thing is getting slammed.
Your mileage may vary on this depending on where you're located. Steam seems to be working pretty well for me overall in Canada, although I cannot get Steam Deck pricing to load for love or money.
California-based Morgan Park hasn't been able to load the "Under $5" section for the past half-hour, though, and in the UK Rich Stanton is struggling with art and text loading.
>> I stopped trying to check my wishlist after many failed attempts. Even trying to check my library was in vein. Steam managed to hold quite well at least the last couple big sales, but not this time.

MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

New Silent Hill 2 Remake Mod Improves Reflections and Lighting
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/new-silent-hill-2-remake-mod-improves-reflections-and-lighting/
NexusMods’ member ‘Wolfic’ has released a must-have config file for Silent Hill 2 Remake. This “mod” aims to fix the awful lighting noise and improve the quality of lighting and reflection on rough surfaces.
Wolfic made a number of cool changes in this mod. He improved how light bounces around in the game. He also reduced the grainy noise from ray tracing, especially inside buildings and on rough surfaces. On top of that, he removed the Vignette effect, making the game look sharper and clearer.
The modder made these changes for when Ray Tracing is turned on. So, for the best results, you should enable Ray Tracing. These upgrades might also work a little with Software Lumen, but it’s not guaranteed.
To showcase these visual improvements, Wolfic shared the following comparison screenshots. And, as you can see, the modded version looks way better than the vanilla. Reflections look better and more stable now. The lighting is also more stable and less grainy. In other words, this isn’t a “placebo mod.” This does improve the game’s graphics.
>> The article has the screenshots, link to the mod and instructions to install it.

Halo: GoldSource V1.0 Is Now Available for Download
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/halo-goldsource-v1-0-is-now-available-for-download/
Halo and Half-Life fans, here is something for you today. The Phoenix Project Software has just released the final standalone version of its Halo Mod for Half-Life, Halo: GoldSource. So, let’s take a closer look at it.
Halo: GoldSource is a fan-made game that brings Halo’s gameplay into the Half-Life engine. It’s built using something called the Aura codebase. The game has two main modes: Slayer and Firefight. You’ll find lots of classic Halo maps and some new ones made just for Firefight. Plus, you can use many cool Halo weapons.
Version 1.0 includes jumping that feels like Halo. It also has smooth camera movement and weapon lag to make it feel more real. Shields work and sound just like in the Halo games. You can also adjust multiplayer settings and set a list of maps to play. There’s even basic support for controllers.
Do note that this is a multiplayer mod. It does NOT bring the campaign mode from Halo to the Half-Life engine. So, if you were expecting something like that, you’ll be disappointed. For everyone else, this should be a cool fan game to play.
You can download the latest version of Halo: GoldSource from this link. At the end of the article, you can also find a trailer for it.
My biggest gripe with Halo: GoldSource is the weird and stuttery mouse movement. You can clearly see it in many parts of the trailer. It makes the game feel disorienting. The team really should have fixed this.

Friday gaming news, part two:

Outer Worlds 2 writes an enormous cheque it will soon have to cash: It's not just New Vegas-inspired, it's Deus Ex-flavoured too
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/outer-worlds-2-writes-an-enormous-cheque-it-will-soon-have-to-cash-its-not-just-new-vegas-inspired-its-deus-ex-flavoured-too/
My opinion on The Outer Worlds 1 is that, you know, it was pretty much fine. It was a perfectly serviceable RPG and it was even pretty funny in spots. But it was sunk by the fact it came from Obsidian, which made some of the best RPGs of all time, and didn't necessarily have much to say with its hyper-corporate setting at a time when everyone was catching some very strong feelings about capitalism.
But I certainly didn't hate it and I like Obsidian a great deal, so I'm very open to (and hopeful for) the possibility that The Outer Worlds 2 will hit where the first game missed. Still, its creative director is certainly out there writing some very big cheques for the game. In a chat with GamesRadar, Brandon Adler not only namechecked Fallout: New Vegas as "a big inspiration for us," he also called out the Eidos Montreal Deus Ex games as an influence.

Top-10 Steam game Bongo Cat is 'actually losing us money' says dev, which is fine because it's been great for business: 'Before, we knocked on 50 doors; now, they are coming to us'

On a plinth in the pantheon of the Steam gods—surrounded by gaming giants like Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, Apex Legends, and Elden Ring Nightreign—tappeth the humble Bongo Cat. At the time of writing, it's currently the 5th most-played game on Steam.
So you'd think its creators would be raking in the moolah, right? Wrong. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Marcel Zurawka, the CEO of Irox Games, says it's basically making no cash at all.

https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/ahead-of-marvel-rivals-season-3-netease-is-making-it-easier-for-losing-teams-to-end-their-own-suffering/
We're just a couple of weeks away from Marvel Rivals' Season 3, with new characters like Blade or Phoenix potentially set to join the roster. But before a new season begins there's the regularly scheduled patch notes which tee up everything for the next couple of months.
Most Marvel Rivals patches are small, purpose-built updates deployed when and where they are needed. This patch is much of the same, but it does include an interesting tidbit: changes to the surrender system.

The man forever fated to be known as the creator of Deus Ex would like you to know that he did not, in fact, create Deus Ex. Not single-handedly, anyway. In a video marking the 25th (oh my god) anniversary of the first Deus Ex, Warren Spector emerged from his hermitage to wish everyone a very merry what a shame.

EA's CEO pulled in $5 million more this year than last, while his employees took home the least money they've made since 2022
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/eas-ceo-pulled-in-usd5-million-more-this-year-than-last-while-his-employees-took-home-the-least-money-theyve-made-since-2022/
Tragic news: despite steering Electronic Arts as CEO since 2013, Andrew Wilson hasn't had a pay rise in the last three years. He's scraping by on the same $1.3 million annual salary he's had since fiscal year (FY) 2023 (when it was bumped up from the $1.29 million he earned as salary in FY2022).
Times are tough. Still, hopefully Wilson can console himself with the other $29,200,000 he's netted in his position over the last fiscal year. Stagnant salary aside, Wilson has—per EA's 2025 Proxy Statement (via Game Developer)—earned $25.7 million in stock awards, $2.8 million in executive bonuses, and a $678,000 garnish from "All other compensation," namely $1.2k in insurance premiums paid on his behalf, $10.3k in 401(K) matching contributions, and $667k in "other," which is almost entirely derived from EA's $664k contribution to Wilson's "personal security benefits," based on an independent threat assessment.
(...)
All the more galling: while Wilson's compensation has shot up by $10 million in the last two fiscal years, comparing FY2025's proxy statement against those of previous years reveals that the earnings of EA's "median employee"—full time, part-time, regular, and temporary, all taken together—has declined in that time.

Pretty much why I haven't bought a Radeon gpu since HD 4870. They really need to invest in forward thinking architectures. Least RDNA 4 finally caught up but it took too many generations imo and we see RDNA3/2/1 users paying the price while even Turing gets DLSS 4.

The first true 1:1 test we have shows Steam OS getting better performance than Windows in 10 big games, tying in 2 more, and it's got me salivating for a desktop version of Valve's OS
https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/the-first-true-1-1-test-we-have-shows-steam-os-getting-better-performance-than-windows-in-10-big-games-tying-in-2-more-and-its-got-me-salivating-for-a-desktop-version-of-valves-os/
A new report by Ars Technica shows SteamOS matching or outright beating Windows gaming performance in a suite of five recent games on the Lenovo Legion Go S, while testing by YouTuber Dave2D showed an additional four games where SteamOS either handily beats Windows, or trails by just one frame.
PC Gamer hardware writer Jacob Fox's review of the Go S adds yet another three games where SteamOS comes out on top, bringing us to a record of 10 wins, zero losses, and two ties for Valve.
The Legion Go S is the first device with official drivers and support for both operating systems, allowing for an apples to apples comparison we just couldn't swing before. We gave the Windows version a 72%, while the SteamOS variant nabbed an Editor's Pick 91% score from Jacob.

YouTube’s ‘John GodGames Emus’ has shared a video, showcasing the latest version of shadPS4 running inFAMOUS Second Son, Killzone: Shadow Fall, and God of War 3 Remastered.
(...)
Now, as you will see, inFAMOUS Second Son and Killzone: Shadow Fall are nowhere close to being playable. Both of these games run at really low framerates. On the other hand, God of War 3 Remastered runs with 50-60FPS, but it’s full of visual artifacts. Still, the fact that the emulator can launch and go in-game is a huge deal.
In this video, we also get to see Driveclub. Driveclub’s performance is not that great here. To capture the gameplay footage, the YouTuber used an AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D with 64GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070. As we can see via the Performance Overlay, both the GPU and CPU were underused. So, I don’t know why the game was only running with 40FPS.
We also get to see KNACK and The Last Guardian. Sadly, though, both of them have major visual issues. That’s a bummer but hey, by the end of 2025, we might be able to play both of them.

Oblivion Remastered Got a New Witcher-Inspired DLC-Sized Mod
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/oblivion-remastered-just-got-a-new-fan-expansion-inspired-by-the-witcher-games/
Modder ‘AlexPreit’ has made a fun new mod for Oblivion Remastered that’s inspired by The Witcher games. In this mod, you go on a quest to find and defeat five bosses. If you win, you’ll get the Viper Armor, Viper Blades, and some cool Witcher magic signs.
Going into more details, the pieces of the Viper Gear will add extra protection based on Light Armor Skill. The mod will gift you with two iconic Blades in the shape of Claymores. The Steel blade will inflict more damage to the NPCs, whereas the Silver blade is for fighting creatures. This is exactly how the swords work in The Witcher games.
Path of the Witcher adds 5 magic signs: Aard, Igni, Axii, Quen, and Yrden. Each sign has 5 levels, from Novice to Master. You can also make them stronger by learning more in the matching school of magic.
All in all, this is a cool fan expansion that a lot of The Witcher fans will enjoy. And hey. This is new free content. So there’s no reason not to download it and give it a try.
To start the quest, you’ll have to fight one of the bosses. As the modder noted, the easiest is Cloud Top north of Chorrol or Veyond Cave exterior north of Bravil.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 finally gets a minimap, thanks to a mod
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/clair-obscur-expedition-33-finally-gets-a-minimap-thanks-to-a-mod/
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of the best games of 2025. However, for some weird reason, the game did not have a minimap. I don’t know why the devs did not include one, as it may put off a number of players. Thankfully, there is a mod that attempts to address this issue.
Created by paboyafx, this mod adds a functional in-game minimap. Once you have installed it, you can press M to show or hide the minimap while playing the game. You can also press “Num -” to zoom out and “Num +” to zoom in. Zoom multiplier is limited to 0.25X to 3X.
And that’s that. This is a great QoL improvement. So, I highly recommend using this custom minimap. From what I know, it’s compatible with the latest game version. So, you won’t likely encounter any issues.
There are two simple ways to install the mod. You can use Mod Loader or UE4SS Experimental. Both methods are explained on the NexusMods page, where you can also download it. At the end of the article, you can also find a video for it. This video showcases the mod in action. So, be sure to watch it as it can give you an idea of what you can expect from it.

Resident Evil: Revelations just got a must-have HD Texture Pack
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/resident-evil-revelations-just-got-a-must-have-hd-texture-pack/
Modder ‘Evgeshajk’ has released a must-have HD Texture Pack for the PC version of Resident Evil: Revelations. This pack will upgrade all of the game’s low-res textures. As such, it’s a must for everyone who wants to replay this RE game.
Resident Evil: Revelations first came out only on the Nintendo 3DS. Later, in 2013, Capcom brought the game to consoles and PC. The PC version did have slightly better graphics than the 3DS, but not by much. And now, in 2025, the game looks blurry and outdated.
And that’s where this HD Texture Pack comes in. Thanks to it, PC gamers can enjoy a much better-looking game. That’s a good thing as Resident Evil: Revelations was actually a pretty good RE game.
The modder used AI tools to improve the game’s original textures. Thanks to this, the new textures still look like the old ones but are much clearer and sharper. This HD Texture Pack is really impressive, so make sure to use it out.

'Oblivion Remastered with guns' becomes reality as modder jury-rigs a literal Glock into the game and shoots up an Oblivion Tower with it
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/the-elder-scrolls/oblivion-remastered-with-guns-becomes-reality-as-modder-jury-rigs-a-literal-glock-into-the-game-and-shoots-up-an-oblivion-tower-with-it/
Back during the hype cycle for Fallout 3, a common refrain of skeptics was that Bethesda had simply made 'Oblivion with guns'—in effect creating some kind of total overhaul mod for The Elder Scrolls 4 that subtracted the spellcrafting and added in shotguns. Sadly, what we actually got was a game about chasing Liam Neeson through 4,000 subway stations. But what could have been, eh?
But great ideas never die, they just go on the shelf. That's presumably why an Oblivion Remastered modder named CosmicBoogaloo has created the aptly named Glock mod for Oblivion Remastered. It boasts that it is the "first functional gun in Oblivion Remastered," and boy, functional sure is one word for it. See below for a video of our hero blasting his way through an Oblivion Tower like it's Hard Boiled.
I continue to be very impressed by what modders can jury-rig together in Oblivion Remastered even absent an official modding toolkit. This one works, as you might have guessed, by contorting the game's archery system into an unholy new shape. Glock is built atop another mod called Slick Archery, from a creator named Dicene, that lets you muck about with the time each phase of the bow-shooting process takes.
So Glock simply sets that time to 0 seconds—an instant maximum-draw-and-fire—and swaps out a bow model for a gun. Shuffle in the right sound effects, bullets in place of arrows and a gun holster to serve as a quiver, and you've successfully created the adventures of John Oblivion, cop on the edge.

Capcom has shared a short gameplay clip from the canceled online open-world version of Resident Evil Requiem. This gameplay clip is from a really early version of the game, and it does not show much. Still, some RE fans may want to see what the game looked like in its early stages.

Here come the second part of today’s gaming news:

No more dolphin swimming or flying in Rematch—in a bug fix, Sloclap very seriously explains why levitating soccer players aren't part of its vision for the game
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/sports/no-more-dolphin-swimming-or-flying-in-rematch-in-a-bug-fix-sloclap-very-seriously-explains-why-levitating-soccer-players-arent-part-of-its-vision-for-the-game/
Sloclap has come to players, hat in hand, a grim expression on its face, and stated that—despite trying as hard as it could—it could not keep dolphin-flopping or levitating football players in its game. Alright, maybe I'm being overdramatic here—but I do find it funny that in the latest hotfix for Rematch, the studio's gone to great lengths to explain its reasoning behind patching up some very obvious exploits.

'We are aware': Square Enix president knows golden goose Final Fantasy 14 is losing its lustre
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/final-fantasy/we-are-aware-square-enix-president-knows-golden-goose-final-fantasy-14-is-losing-its-lustre/
It's a well-known fact at this point that Final Fantasy 14 is Square Enix's breadwinner. It's regularly cited as the company's biggest source of income, but I've been getting the feeling that the golden goose is about to go on life support: There's been a noticeable growing weariness during latest expansion Dawntrail, seeing subscription numbers tick down, and a feeling that the MMO—and Square's overreliance on it as a money machine—is teetering on the edge.
It's something that has not gone unnoticed among higher ups at the company, it seems. During a recent shareholder meeting—with snippets shared by investment reporter Yuzz on X—president Takashi Kiryu was questioned as to whether he was aware that the game had "experienced a decline in game quality and a loss of fans" since Dawntrail's release.

Inzoi's biggest problems right now are overwhelmingly the fact it's 'lacking simulation content' and its painfully awkward social interactions, player survey reveals
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/life-sim/inzois-biggest-problems-right-now-are-overwhelmingly-the-fact-its-lacking-simulation-content-and-its-painfully-awkward-social-interactions-player-survey-reveals/
"Inzoi is a good-looking game with a lack of anything meaningful to do" is a sentiment I've shared often. And hey, now I have some numbers to back me up.
Developer Krafton recently held a livestream for a handful of its content creators—headed up by director Hyungjun 'Kjun' Kim—divulging some statistics like most-requested features and things players liked the most and the least. Some of the slides were shared by YouTuber Fantayzia, and they paint an interesting picture of where the game is at right now.

DayZ's biggest map ever is coming next year, where 'Middle Eastern-style cities lie next to Soviet-era military bases'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/survival-crafting/dayzs-biggest-map-ever-is-coming-next-year-where-middle-eastern-style-cities-lie-next-to-soviet-era-military-bases/
Looks like things are heating up in DayZ: a new map has just been announced for the ruthless open world survival game, and it's going to be a hot one.
In contrast to DayZ's last expansion, Frostline, which plunged players into a frigid archipelago called Sakhal, the new Badlands map, coming in 2026, is set in "the sand-swept, war-torn expanse of Nasdara Province" where survival means "battling severe heat and drought."

Helldivers 2 players celebrate victory over Sony as the 'review bomb' cape finally appears in the game: 'We won the biggest and longest running Major Order in the game to date'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/helldivers-2-players-celebrate-victory-over-sony-as-the-review-bomb-cape-finally-appears-in-the-game-we-won-the-biggest-and-longest-running-major-order-in-the-game-to-date/
Helldivers 2 has, generally speaking, been a massive success for Arrowhead Game Studios and publisher Sony. But it did have one early and notable misstep. Shortly after release Sony made a PSN account a requirement to play, and removed Helldivers 2 from sale in 177 countries and territories that didn't have access to PSN: sparking a review bombing campaign that saw the game receive over 200,000 negative Steam reviews.
The then-CEO of Arrowhead, John Pilestedt, managed the PR crisis as best he could but, before Sony eventually backed down in May 2024, the one thing that mollified the community was a dose of gallows humour. Pilestedt shared a fan post that pitched a cape featuring a design based on the Steam review graph, with the lines going down, which swiftly became known as the "review bomb" cape (this accessory is one of the game's customisable cosmetics).
It instantly became a focal point for the Helldivers, and in June last year Arrowhead said it had made the cape, but was just waiting for the right time to release it. Now, the time has come.

Randy Pitchford makes people mad again by warning that Borderlands 4 will take even longer to get deep discounts than Borderlands 3 did
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/randy-pitchford-makes-people-mad-again-by-warning-that-borderlands-4-will-take-even-longer-to-get-deep-discounts-than-borderland-3-did/
Borderlands 3 is 95% off on Steam right now, dropping it to just $3—its lowest price ever, and one of the best deals in the 2025 Steam Summer Sale. And somehow, that screamingly good price has turned into yet another opportunity for Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford to annoy Borderlands fans on social media.
"Sales like this and Borderlands 3 showing up on console subscription programs took over 5 years from the game's launch to happen," Pitchford wrote on X. "Take advantage when it's here!"
(...)
But he could not help himself, and continued: "And to set expectations, it will be even longer before this kind of thing happens in the next cycle with Borderlands 4."
>> I don’t know. I’m fairly sure that if it sells like crap, big discounts will come rather soon.

Fortnite cheater wins $6,850 in competitive tournaments, gets caught, now owes Epic $175,000
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/battle-royale/fortnite-cheater-wins-usd6-850-in-competitive-tournaments-gets-caught-now-owes-epic-usd175-000/
Despite what we are told as children, cheaters do sometimes prosper—fairly often, in fact. Every now and then, though, cheaters push their luck a little too far and their bad deeds come around to bite them in the ass. Such is the case of Sebastian Araujo, who won more than $6,800 in Fortnite tournaments after evading a ban, and now owes Epic $175,000 as a result.

Diablo 4's old and forgotten dungeons will be renovated into loot-packed marathons that culminate with a duel against a familiar boss in its next season
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/diablo-4s-old-and-forgotten-dungeons-will-be-renovated-into-loot-packed-marathons-that-culminate-with-a-duel-against-a-familiar-boss-in-its-next-season/
Out of all the changes Blizzard has made to Diablo 4 since it was released two years ago, its most basic dungeons have gone largely untouched. A few things have been tweaked here and there, but they've largely taken a back seat to all the new dungeon types introduced after launch.
In Diablo 4's next season, dungeons—specifically Nightmare Dungeons—will have a purpose again. Instead of an activity you do as you're leveling up and then forget about for the next 50 hours, Nightmare Dungeons will be the source of most of the crafting materials in the game, and, of course, they'll also have opportunities for valuable loot.

Dave the Diver In the Jungle DLC is delayed, but the free Godzilla Content Pack is back and Ichiban Kasuga has extended his vacation until the end of 2026
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/adventure/dave-the-diver-in-the-jungle-dlc-is-delayed-but-the-free-godzilla-content-pack-is-back-and-ichiban-kasuga-has-extended-his-vacation-until-the-end-of-2026/
In May 2024, the hit deep sea diving restaurant simulator Dave the Diver got some very big DLC in the form of the Godzilla Content Pack. It was free, with a catch: The DLC would only be available until November 23, after which it would be gone forever thanks to licensing issues, Nexon said.
Apparently "forever" is kind of a pliable term, though, because Godzilla is back, baby. Yes, it's still free, and I'm sorry to say that it's only available for a limited time again. But the good news is that the availability period this time around ends on December 31, 2026—that's not a typo, that's 2026—and may stick around even longer: Developer Mintrocket said in a video that the Godzilla Pack will be available "at least until the end of next year," and the description on Steam sure looks like something that's meant to be easily (maybe even automatically) updated.
(...)
There is one spot of bad news amidst all the good, about the In the Jungle DLC announced in December 2024: Instead of being out in 2025 as planned, the studio has delayed it to early 2026. That sucks—but then the video concluded with members of the Mintrocket team putting on a live performance of music from the Dave the Diver soundtrack, so as far as I'm concerned, all is forgiven.

New Vegas lead Josh Sawyer thinks turn-based combat fell off in the 2000s due to a lack of 'tactical variation': Even Fallout 1 would 'get to the point where you're always doing nut shots and eye shots'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fallout/new-vegas-lead-josh-sawyer-thinks-turn-based-combat-fell-off-in-the-2000s-due-to-a-lack-of-tactical-variation-even-fallout-1-would-get-to-the-point-where-youre-always-doing-nut-shots-and-eye-shots/
Before a recent interview with Obsidian studio design director Josh Sawyer, I was tasked with a crucial mission by a different games industry Josh. PCG news writer Joshua Wolens wanted Josh the Elder's take on the apparent final victory of turn-based combat over real time with pause, as represented by recent hits like Baldur's Gate 3, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
(...)
"I think that the success of real time with pause, back when I started [in the late 1990s], was due to the prevalence of the RTS genre," Sawyer told me. "Also turn-based games, at that time, there wasn't a huge amount of tactical variation in them. Like, I love Fallout and the combat is super satisfying, but it does kind of get to a point where you're always doing nut shots and eye shots, and you're trying to get 3x armor-bypassing criticals.

This new 'roguelike deckbuilding typing game' is like Mavis Beacon Teaches Balatro, and I'm here for it
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/this-new-roguelike-deckbuilding-typing-game-is-like-mavis-beacon-teaches-balatro-and-im-here-for-it/
Unlike the creator of Balatro, I haven't 100% completed Balatro, but I'm still kinda done playing Balatro for the time being—at least until the creator of Balatro delivers Balatro 1.1, which will infuse Balatro with more Balatro.
In the meantime, I'm on the hunt for some new roguelikes to wile away my life with—as long as those roguelikes have a heavy dose of Balatro in them, of course.
There have been a bunch already: Balatro but it's Mahjong, Balatro but it's plinko, Balatro but it's stock trading, and even Balatro but it's breakfast, just to name a handful. And today I dutifully tried Balatro but it's typing, and even though I'm a pretty sloppy typist, I'm still kinda into it.

Hellblade 2 is getting an enhanced edition that brings back the fake permadeath system from the first game, but there's every chance it's real this time

Angsty Icelandic hiking simulator Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 will get an enhanced edition in August, adding yet more graphics to Ninja Theory's visually stunning, mechanically wanting sequel. But it also brings back one of the more controversial features from the first game, namely, the icky black rot that crawled up Senua's arm each time she died.

Atari's reboot of Mad Max-style racer Fatal Run is coming later this year, and its new trailer shows a hefty dose of Burnout in its irradiated DNA
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/racing/ataris-reboot-of-mad-max-style-racer-fatal-run-is-coming-later-this-year-and-its-new-trailer-shows-a-hefty-dose-of-burnout-in-its-irradiated-dna/
I missed Atari's announcement that it's bringing back Fatal Run, a post-apocalyptic racer released when Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome was still a relatively new film. Not that I was eagerly anticipating it—Fatal Run was only released in Europe during the death throes of the Atari 2600, so it isn't exactly a world-renowned phenomenon. According to Fatal Run's Wikipedia, Retro Gamer reflected upon it back in 2016. They claimed the best of the game was the cutscenes, which is damning with faint praise.
But the latest trailer for Atari's revival, titled Fatal Run 2089, caught my eye because it appears to seed its death races with a big dollop of inspiration from Burnout. Developed by MNSTR Studio, Fatal Run 2089 frames its vehicular action around a cross country adventure much like the original, though this time you're tasked with delivering a clean energy solution known as ARCs, rather than an anti-radiation vaccine. As is so often the case in post-apocalyptic wastelands, between you and your destination are an array of petrolhead marauders hellbent on stopping you.

Two Point Museum's first DLC adds a fantasy flourish to your exhibitions, letting you display mimic chests, a giant d20, and a chicken statue that turns people into poultry

Two Point Museum is already one of the most enjoyable management sims I've played, spinning its theme down some wonderfully silly avenues that let you curate exhibitions of ghosts and giant carnivorous plants. Now, publisher SEGA has announced an expansion that will add another range of bizarre artifacts to discover and display, this time with the theme of swords, sorcery, dragons and quite possibly dungeons too.

Dying Light continues celebrating its 10th anniversary with a big graphical facelift, but don't you dare call it a remaster
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/dying-light-continues-celebrating-its-10th-anniversary-with-a-big-graphical-facelift-but-dont-you-dare-call-it-a-remaster/
Free-running zombie survival extravaganza Dying Light is 10 years old this year, a fact that my rapidly rotting brain simply refuses to accept. Developer Techland is determined to hammer the news home though, dedicating an entire year to anniversary celebrations. Back in January, the developer gave away its first DLC for the game in four years. Now, it has given the game a big lick of graphical paint in what it's calling the "Retouched" update.

Space Marine's underwhelming remaster is getting an extended refund window, and a discount for owners of the original
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/space-marines-underwhelming-remaster-is-getting-an-extended-refund-window-and-a-discount-for-owners-of-the-original/
I didn't hate my time with Space Marine: Master Crafted Edition, because it's basically the same stompy action game I loved only with some more polygons so those oversized shoulderpads look a bit rounder. But I didn't love the way the new weapon-select menu blocks the middle of the screen and hangs around just long enough to be annoying, or the black-screen bug, or the crash to desktop that made me realize I should probably wait for some patches before I go back to it.
The other unlovely thing about Space Marine: Master Crafted Edition is its price. A whole $40 for a light-touch remaster with a multiplayer mode hardly anyone is playing seemed a bit much for many players, especially those who already owned the Anniversary Edition, which bundled in all the DLC as well as the artbook, strategy guide, soundtrack, and other goodies back in 2021.
A predictable flood of negative user reviews followed (it's currently at 71% negative reviews on Steam), and the equally predictable apology and walkback has now arrived. "If you've already purchased Space Marine: Master Crafted Edition," the Steam blog post states, "you are eligible for a full refund, regardless of playtime, as long as you request it before 6pm BST/10pm PST July 10 2025 (when the Steam Summer Sale ends)."

Gloomwood's latest research update adds the most scientific thing of all: headshots
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/horror/gloomwoods-latest-research-update-adds-the-most-scientific-thing-of-all-headshots/
Not too long ago, Victorian stealth-em-up Gloomwood received a "research update" that lets players study dissected monsters and then inject their sweet juice directly into your veins for temporary powers. More recently, the early access immsim's latest update has expanded on those research options.

Owlcat is 'redoing everything from scratch' in Dark Heresy, its next Warhammer 40,000 CRPG, which is the best thing I've heard about it so far

When Owlcat left behind the bloated Pathfinder system, a numberhead ruleset that held back the otherwise excellent Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous, I rejoiced. Finally, with Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, they'd have the opportunity to focus on their strengths: storytelling and player freedom.
(...)
But for the studio's next 40K game, Dark Heresy, things will apparently be different. "We will be redoing everything from scratch," executive producer Anatoly Shestov told The Gamer. "Even the design things, mechanical things, abilities, options, role-playing systems. There will be changes even in the basic stats."

The brilliant Half-Life-inspired survival game Abiotic Factor cascades into 1.0 this July
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/survival-crafting/the-brilliant-half-life-inspired-survival-game-abiotic-factor-cascades-into-1-0-this-july/
Like a bespectacled boffin dangling a piece of cheese over the cage of a two-headed lab rat, Abiotic Factor has been teasing me with its 1.0 release for a while. Developer Deep Field Games initially broached the subject back in April as it detailed its upcoming Cold Fusion update, before confirming Cold Fusion is the 1.0 update earlier this month.
Now, Deep Field has pinned down a specific date upon which the Half-Life-inspired survival game will reach its final tram stop. Expect the G.A.T.E research facility to formally open its doors on July 22.

Wreckfest 2's latest update lets you drive a grotty motorhome that's definitely had meth cooked in it, and ensures that 'realistic damage mode is now more realistic'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/racing/wreckfest-2s-latest-update-lets-you-drive-a-grotty-motorhome-thats-definitely-had-meth-cooked-in-it-and-ensures-that-realistic-damage-mode-is-now-more-realistic/
Wreckfest 2's early access launch may have been smaller than a Fiat 500 after being run over by a monster truck, but developer Bugbear has been hard at work buffing out the sequel's bodywork since it launched back earlier this year. In May, the game received its first content update adding extra cars and tracks. Now, a second major patch folds in yet more of both, while also tuning up the physics powering this chaotic homage to games like Flatout and Destruction Derby.

The dev behind one of my favorite recent FPSes is making a 'horror game about a trainee metro driver trapped in the dampest subway east of anything that matters' set in a real city that doesn't actually have a subway

Spytihněv, the developer behind the excellent 2023 boomer shooter HROT, has finally unveiled his next project: Brno Transit, a gnarly-looking horror game set in a surreal subway system. Specifically that of Brno, a major city in the southeast of Czechia which does not actually have a subway system in real life, only getting a single underground rail line between two stations in 2022.

The best stealth game of the year just released its source code
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/the-best-stealth-game-of-the-year-just-released-its-source-code/
Blendo Games has publicly released the source code of its latest game, Skin Deep, encouraging other developers to build more stealth games in its footsteps—or at least to take a look at the sick game engine it built. I, for one, am shocked by a specific thing about it: It runs on a core of idTech4, which you may recognize as the engine behind Doom 3.

Deltarune's Tenna was first envisioned in 3D almost a decade ago in a delightfully janky prototype
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/deltarunes-tenna-was-first-envisioned-in-3d-almost-a-decade-ago-in-a-delightfully-janky-prototype/
Tenna, the CRT-headed game show host antagonist of Deltarune chapter 3, first showed up in a videogame this year—but Deltarune creator Toby Fox first started working on the character all the way back in 2016. Fox recently said so in a social media post where he quoted himself of nearly a decade ago trying to learn 3D animation.

If you're curious about the crazy-ambitious space survival game from the makers of EVE Online, it's got a free trial running through the next week and change

CCP Games' space survival MMO, EVE Frontier, is having another free trial for curious players. The trial period started on June 27 and will run through July 7, and you can get in on the action by making an account through EVE Frontier's website. EVE Frontier is a weird one: CCP has described it as its laboratory for experimenting with features and ideas too disruptive or risky to attempt in O.G. EVE Online, which has been running for 23 years and counting now.

Ubisoft can't button its yap about the not-so-secret Black Flag remake—now Edward Kenway's voice actor is telling AC4 fans 'You might have to beat it again'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/assassins-creed/ubisoft-cant-button-its-yap-about-the-not-so-secret-black-flag-remake-now-edward-kenways-voice-actor-is-telling-ac4-fans-you-might-have-to-beat-it-again/
Benjamin Franklin once remarked—of his time starring in Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed 3—that three may keep a secret if two of them are dead. He was right, because the almost-certainly-upcoming remake of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is probably the worst-kept secret in videogames right now. People just cannot button their yaps about it.

Crisis averted—Blizzard quickly axes busted Diablo 4 build that turned players into teleporting gods of destruction on the PTR, because it was 'basically eclipsing everything else'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/crisis-averted-blizzard-quickly-axes-busted-diablo-4-build-that-turned-players-into-teleporting-gods-of-destruction-on-the-ptr-because-it-was-basically-eclipsing-everything-else/
The latest Diablo 4 season'll be introducing Horadric Spellcrafting—a seasonal power that lets players kitbash their own spells together which, as you might imagine, is being tested on the public test realms (PTR). Anyone who's played Oblivion before will be able to tell you that custom spell creation systems are notoriously hard to balance, and that truth has borne out here to spectacular effect.

'What's the most chaotic evil thing we can make?': Overwatch 2 devs are seeing just how far they can push Stadium's fights, but will reign it in for the sake of player sanity
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/whats-the-most-chaotic-evil-thing-we-can-make-overwatch-2-devs-are-seeing-just-how-far-they-can-push-stadiums-fights-but-will-reign-it-in-for-the-sake-of-player-sanity/
It can be hard to find order in the chaos of an Overwatch 2 Stadium game. The ability to distinguish between what brightly coloured mess of colours is good and bad at a moment's notice can be a hard one to master. And now you have to deal with all the various hero Powers and item abilities—it's one hell of a ride.
>> And they were super confident in the swap to third person perspective with this mode.

'Spitting in the face of your international audience': The Alters caught using generative AI for background text and translations, despite not disclosing such on Steam

The Alters has been enjoying a solid reception from fans and critics alike—we even gave it a sterling 90% in our The Alters review—unfortunately, that shine's been tarnished by some recent player discoveries: The Alters almost definitely used AI to generate its background text and translations.

'The censorship is a step too far': Ready or Not is getting review bombed after developers sanitise the game to adhere to stricter console standards
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/the-censorship-is-a-step-too-far-ready-or-not-is-getting-review-bombed-after-developers-sanitise-the-game-to-adhere-to-stricter-console-standards/
Ready or Not, the SWAT sim shooter, is known for its brutality. You can blow the head off an enemy combatant, dismember bodies, or just hit them in the back of the head with your gun. It's certainly not to everyone's taste but, for those who like it, the gore seems to really matter.
But Ready or Not's devs are dialling the gore and violence down, just a tad. "Player-induced dismemberment still has a large presence in the game, but is a little more limited as to when it occurs," a dev blog post says.
(...)
The discontent with the recent changes has manifested itself in a review bombing campaign. Recent reviews on Steam are currently down from Very Positive to Mixed over the last couple of days.
Some players are willing to look past buggy DLCs and a lack of content but agree that "the censorship is a step too far". Others feel as if this is the final straw, a change in direction for Ready or Not that they don't buy into, with the poor performance whittling their enthusiasm down for a while before these changes.
>> It always amazes me how some developers fails to know their audience and how they might react to any changes in the game.

The 285K has a total of 24 cores, 8 P and 16 E cores. The top of the line Nova Lake CPU is rumored to have 52 cores, 16 P, 32 E and 4 Low Power ones. And despite having more than twice cores it's only 60% better? That doesn't sound promising.

But maybe that's because it's power limited as the rumors also call it as a 150W parts compared to the 250W of the 285K.
