Helldivers 2 has more players than the population of Sweden, making it PlayStation's fastest-selling game of all time
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/helldivers-2-has-more-players-than-the-population-of-sweden-making-it-playstations-fastest-selling-game-of-all-time/
Every game studio has the same, overriding goal: To field enough players to destroy Sweden. Companies like Capcom and Activision have, of course, had more than enough players in their myriad series to occupy Stockholm for some time, but now a plucky upstart has joined their ranks.
Arrowhead just announced that Helldivers 2 has sold over 12 million copies since its February release, meaning "There are more Helldivers than there are Swedes," in the words of CEO Johan Pilestedt. Sweden has around 10.5 million people in it, if you're wondering, and Arrowhead is a Swedish studio, just in case you're baffled by the comparison.

In this tech demo, Weta Digital explored how far they can push movie-quality hair, fur, and feathers for linear storytelling in real-time. And yes, on high-end GPUs, you can run this demo in real-time with smooth framerates.

MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

Helldivers 2 and Star Wars collide in this amazing mod, due for release "later this week"
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/helldivers-2-and-star-wars-collide-in-this-amazing-mod-due-for-release-later-this-week/
Helldivers 2 may not have any official modding support, but you simply cannot stop players putting weird stuff in your game. A couple of weeks ago, YouTuber and modder ToastedShoes dropped Master Chief, Buzz Lightyear, the TARDIS, and more into the war for a truly chaotic take on managed democracy. Now he's showing off an impressive collision with the Star Wars universe.
Not only are the Helldivers themselves reskinned as clone soldiers (including fan favourites Rex, Cody, and Hunter), the Automatons have been recast as Separatist droids. Though the weapons and stratagems are unchanged, it's surprising how well it all fits together for a convincing recreation of a Clone Wars battle. Finally, you can experience what it would be like to scrabble in the mud against horrific odds while the Jedi are off somewhere else messing about with their lightsabers.
You can't try the full Helldivers 2 Star Wars mod for yourself just yet, but you don't have long to wait—ToastedShoes promises it will drop later this week. In the meantime, you can at least try one of the skins, a trooper of the 501st in phase 2 armour. Do note though that modding Helldivers 2 is done at your own risk—because there's no actual support, it's technically not allowed, and there's always the risk that even client-side cosmetics could get flagged as cheating when used online, especially given the game's crossplay with the pretty strict PlayStation Network. As far as I can find Arrowhead haven't made an official statement on the use of mods, but it's safest to assume you're always rolling the dice when you use mods in a multiplayer game.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Just Got a DLSS 3 Frame Generation Mod
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/assassins-creed-valhalla-just-got-a-dlss-3-frame-generation-mod/
Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla fans, we have some good and some bad news for you today. The good news is that modder PureDark has just released a new DLSS 3 Frame Generation Mod for it. The bad news is that this is a paid mod.
Thanks to this mod, PC gamers will be able to enable DLSS 3 Super Resolution and Frame Generation in this AC game. This can greatly improve performance, especially for PC gamers who own an RTX40 series GPU.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was an AMD-sponsored title that got support for FSR 1.0. Yep, Ubisoft only added support for the first version of FSR, which is kind of a bummer.
It’s also worth noting that the mod adds support for DeepDVC. DeepDVC is basically RTX Dynamic Vibrance (or at least that’s what the modder claims). So, alongside DLSS 3, you can also enable DeepDVC.

Tuesday news, the second part:

Stellaris gets a DLC about AI that features AI-created voices, director insists it's 'ethical' and 'we're pretty good at exploring dystopian sci-fi and don't want to end up there ourselves'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/strategy/stellaris-gets-an-dlc-about-ai-that-features-ai-created-voices-director-insists-its-ethical-and-were-pretty-good-at-exploring-dystopian-sci-fi-and-dont-want-to-end-up-there-ourselves/
Stellaris launched in 2016, since when it has followed the usual Paradox post-launch cycle of regular tweaking accompanied by substantial paid-for DLC expansions. The latest is The Machine Age and focuses on "synthetic ascension" and the promise of eternal life among the stars, adding various new elements to the machine side of the game alongside a synth space queen that says she's going to get us all there.

After spending time trying to fix a bug that wasn't actually there, Manor Lords dev has a simple request for players: 'Have fun with mods but please don't report bugs if you use them'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/strategy/after-spending-time-trying-to-fix-a-bug-that-wasnt-actually-there-manor-lords-dev-has-a-simple-request-for-players-have-fun-with-mods-but-please-dont-report-bugs-if-you-use-them/
Manor Lords does not yet have official mod support, but that hasn't stopped industrious modders from doing their thing with it. A VR mod popped up at the beginning of May, and last week someone put Shrek into the game. Which is all well and good, and developer Slavic Magic seems very supportive of the efforts overall. But he does have one request: If you're using a Manor Lords mod, please don't submit Manor Lords bug reports.
Mods can open the door to all sorts of new and unexpected content and experiences in whatever game you happen to be playing at the moment, but they can also be a gateway to headaches. For one thing, updates to games can cause mods to stop working, as we saw most recently with the (not so) big Fallout 4 "next gen" update, which thoroughly borked mod support and modded saves out of the gate. In the case of Manor Lords, it seems the reverse was true: A mod led to a report that led to time spent searching for a bug that wasn't actually there.

The original Fallout had so much attention to detail, you could get special dialogue for speedrunning it in a weird order and returning to a completed zone to talk to a zombie who hates you
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/the-original-fallout-had-so-much-attention-to-detail-you-could-get-special-dialogue-for-speedrunning-it-in-a-weird-order-and-returning-to-a-completed-zone-to-talk-to-a-zombie-who-hates-you/
Like PC Gamer print editor Robert Jones, my big reaction to the Fallout show has been getting classic with it, replaying the 1997 original for the first time in over a decade. It more than holds up in so many ways, including accounting for player choices so deranged, you wonder how anyone came across them organically.
The one that blows me away was showcased recently by Dante Hope on YouTube, the "rarest" dialogue in Fallout 1. Getting it requires bucking the game's usual sequence of events by beating the final boss before the second-to-last boss in under 110 in-game days—a tight time limit with how long overworld travel takes in Fallout—then revisiting Necropolis, a one and done combat-heavy zone, to talk to a zombie who hates your guts.

Seeking to quell confusion about what his new game really is, indie developer Tomas Sala has renamed his latest release to "Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles, a creative building sandbox," because players on Steam kept tagging it as a strategy game.

One of my most anticipated upcoming RPGs doesn't just have a fishing minigame—it has a full 3D aquarium where you can view your biggest catches and learn fantasy fish 'lore'

Arrowhead is actually making a 'review bomb' cape to commemorate the Helldivers 2 PSN fiasco, complete with two huge negative review bars

Helldivers 2 continues to make lemonade out of its biggest blunder. On the back of the "PSN-gate" fiasco that saw the best-selling shooter pounded with negative Steam reviews, delisted from a bunch of countries (an ongoing problem), and its publisher Sony pressured into reversing a disruptive PSN sign-in requirement, Arrowhead is now making a cheeky cape to commemorate the player protest.

'If Silksong shadow drops … I'm burning the whole thing down': Dead Cells devs announce second release date and gameplay trailer for upcoming roguelike, after Hades 2 shattered original plans
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/roguelike/if-silksong-shadow-drops-im-burning-the-whole-thing-down-dead-cells-devs-announce-second-release-date-and-gameplay-trailer-for-upcoming-roguelike-after-hades-2-shattered-original-plans/
The Rogue Prince of Persia looks pretty good—and I'd probably be playing it later this week, if only Hades 2 had not devoured my entire attention span this month. Its developers Evil Empire (an arm of Dead Cells creators Motion Twin, who've developed a ton of content for it over the past few years) seemingly agreed, since they delayed the whole thing last week.
(...)
That promise has been thoroughly kept as per a recent Steam announcement, though with one major asterisk: "If Silksong shadow drops in the next two weeks I'm burning the whole thing down!" Otherwise, The Rogue Prince of Persia will be heading into early access May 27.

Prison Architect 2 developer Double Eleven has been replaced by publisher Paradox Interactive after working on the series for nearly a decade
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/strategy/prison-architect-2-developer-double-eleven-has-been-replaced-by-publisher-paradox-interactive-after-working-on-the-series-for-nearly-a-decade/
After being delayed twice in the last year, the upcoming management game Prison Architect 2 has hit another bump. The original developer, Double Eleven, is leaving the project after failing to reach a commercial agreement with publisher Paradox Interactive.
"After nine years together, Double Eleven is leaving Prison Architect. Double Eleven has been with us since the console port, led the development of the game on all platforms, and has been working on Prison Architect 2 over the last few years. With the sequel passing certification on all platforms, the contract was fulfilled. However, we could not find a commercial agreement that worked for both parties moving forward and mutually agreed to part ways," the current Prison Architect 2 team at Paradox Interactive said in a statement on the Steam page.
The new developer working on Prison Architect 2 is Kokku, a Brazilian co-development company that has previously done 3D artwork on Horizon Forbidden West's weapons and robots as well as porting Golf Club Wasteland to PS4, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
>> Well, that’s not good news.

Helldivers 2's Polar Patriots Warbond gets an icy reception, as over 70% of 21,000 Discord voters declare they'd prefer more patches or simply don't like it
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/helldivers-2s-polar-patriots-warbond-gets-an-icy-reception-as-over-70-of-21000-discord-voters-declare-theyd-prefer-more-patches-or-simply-dont-like-it/
The Helldivers 2 community has poured cold water all over the game's latest warbond, with more than two thirds of the community saying they'd prefer more patches to Polar Patriots, or that they simply don't like it at all.
As reported by GamesRadar, the stats derive from a poll ran on the Helldivers 2 discord, which asked "What do you think of Polar Patriots so far?" The poll offered five potential responses, ranging from "It's great!", through "It's ok, but I'd like fewer warbonds and more patches" all the way down to "I don't like it."

This chocolate factory-building game asks the question 'What if Willy Wonka had a gun?'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/survival-crafting/this-chocolate-factory-building-game-asks-the-question-what-if-willy-wonka-had-a-gun/
'What if you could build Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory?' is a question I'm surprised video games haven't answered yet. It's a natural next step for the factory-building genre, taking the fundamentals of a game like Satisfactory and theming it around the one fictional factory everyone knows about.
Chocolate Factory, developed by Tbjbu2 (who I presume was named by the developer's cat walking across the keyboard), does exactly this. But it also asks a far less obvious, some might say unnecessary question, namely 'What if Willy Wonka had a massive gun?'.
Watching the announcement trailer (which isn't on YouTube for some reason, but it's viewable on the game's Steam page) Chocolate Factory is clearly heavily derived from Satisfactory. It has a similar visual style, building system, and blend of construction and survival to Coffee Stain's massively successful game. The main difference is that it's set in a fantastical candyland, with numerous biomes themed around different treats. There are chocolate mountains, candy-canes and swirly lollipops that grow like trees, and of course, hostile gingerbread men that you must shoot to death.

Hades 2 will be getting the first of many patches later this month, as Supergiant starts brewing quality-of-life changes to resource gathering and movement in its cauldron
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/roguelike/hades-2-will-be-getting-the-first-of-many-patches-later-this-month-as-supergiant-starts-brewing-quality-of-life-changes-to-resource-gathering-and-movement-in-its-cauldron/
Hades 2 released into early access earlier this month—and it's been doing gangbusters, unsurprisingly. Supergiant has a sterling reputation behind it, with so much industry heft to every step it takes that other indie devs have already leapt out of the way of the game's early access, considered a quasi-'shadow drop'.
(...)
"Our first patch should be coming later this month," reads an announcement on the game's Steam page, "though note we don't have a more-specific timeline. With it, we're looking for improvements we can make in the near term, in a way that makes Hades II better for everyone and come closer to realising our goals."

Saints Row Reboot has apparently sold 1.7 million units
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/saints-row-reboot-has-apparently-sold-1-7-million-units/
Volition’s Community and Social Media Manager, Tyrin Stevenson, has shared some sales figures for Saints Row. According to Stevenson, the 2022 reboot of Saints Row has sold 1.7 million units, and attracted 1 million players on all platforms.
Now some of you may be wondering how these numbers are possible. Surely the sales should be higher than the amount of people that have played it, right? Well, I don’t have an answer to this. Perhaps there are people that have bought the game but never played it? Or perhaps the sales numbers include the free units that Epic Games offered in December 2023?
(...)
For comparison purposes, the first Saints Row game sold 2 million. Then, its sequel, Saints Row 2 sold 3.4 million. Saints Row The Third was also a big hit as it sold 5.5 million. And while we don’t have any sales numbers for Saints Row 4, we do know that it sold 1 million copies in its first week.

This Mod for Minecraft attempts to recreate the whole world from Fallout: New Vegas with immersive gunplay mechanics
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/this-mod-for-minecraft-attempts-to-recreate-1-to-1-the-whole-world-from-fallout-new-vegas-with-immersive-gunplay-mechanics/
Now here is something really cool. ProjectMCNV has released a new beta version of their ambitious Minecraft: New Vegas project. Minecraft: New Vegas features a 1-to-1 recreation of the Fallout New Vegas map with immersive gunplay. It looks incredible, so don’t sleep on it.
Minecraft: New Vegas attempts to combine the detailed missions and decisions of Fallout with the unexpected twists of a multiplayer world. All of this is enhanced by a hardcore environment where the weak can perish from wildlife, and the brutish can enslave towns. It’s a really cool total conversion mod. So, if you want to experience Minecraft in a completely different way, you should definitely get it.
Minecraft: New Vegas allows you to live within the world of Fallout in a way no other media does. You build your character up from nothing, and can become whatever you want. In this mod, you have the ability to take the life of anyone, or anything you see. You can barter and steal any item you find. This has D&D levels of detail, but with all the benefits of an online game, and without the drawbacks.

Modding and warfare peak with mod that imposes 1% chance of a Five Nights at Freddy's jumpscare in WW2 strategy sim Hearts of Iron 4

War is hell: The scent of cordite, the clamour of artillery fire, the blood and the smoke and the guys from Five Nights at Freddy's popping up randomly to scare you. It's a nightmare made flesh, and something we ought to have grown past as a society, but which remains as a sad holdover from another age (2014, release year of Five Nights at Freddy's).
Or, at least, that's the case in Five Nights at Hearts of Iron 4, a mod/crime from an author named Krumtum that you can currently find over at the Hearts of Iron 4 Steam Workshop page. It does exactly what it sounds like: Mashing up the characters of FNAF and the unrivalled destruction of the greatest conflict in human history in a real peanut butter/chocolate-style combo.
"Have you always wanted HOI 4 to be more scary?" asks our author, "No? Now you can make it with this mod!" Once you've subscribed, "Every day you've got 1% chance for a jumpscare," in which one of FNAF's many animatronic horrors will appear atop a devastated continent to howl blue murder at you. In times of war, the law falls silent, but Freddy Fazbear speaks up.

The fifth and final part of its Tales from the Far Territory DLC is due out next month, and it's bringing with it some pretty interesting new elements, most of which are going to ratchet up the challenge but one that will give you a second chance at survival.

Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert's next game is 'classic Zelda meets Diablo meets Thimbleweed Park'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/monkey-island-creator-ron-gilberts-next-game-is-classic-zelda-meets-diablo-meets-thimbleweed-park/
Ron Gilbert, famed for his work on classic adventures including Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, and more recently Thimbleweed Park, is getting up to something new and that looks to be quite different from his past work. It doesn't have a name yet, but it's described on Gilbert's Terrible Toybox website as "classic Zelda meets Diablo meets Thimbleweed Park."

Nexon says sweaty FPS the Finals surpassed expectations at launch but has tailed-off badly, pledges to 'understand and address the key issues'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/nexon-says-sweaty-fps-the-finals-surpassed-expectations-at-launch-but-has-tailed-off-badly-pledges-to-understand-and-address-the-key-issues/
The Finals, Embark Studios' spectacular yet sweaty multiplayer FPS, is underperforming according to publisher Nexon, as it reports a broader drop in revenue and operating income.
In an earnings letter reporting its financial performance for its first quarter of 2024 (via TechRaptor), Nexon reports that its "stronger-than-expected" revenues, which derived mainly from games like EA Sports FC Online (which it publishes in China), were "partially offset primarily by lower-than-expected performance of the Finals".

Helldivers 2 dev says patrol spawn rates are busted and that Arrowhead's walking its changes back, but 'we want to give it proper testing' to 'see that it works this time'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/helldivers-2-dev-says-patrol-spawn-rates-are-busted-and-that-arrowheads-walking-its-changes-back-but-we-want-to-give-it-proper-testing-to-see-that-it-works-this-time/
Helldivers 2's patrol rates have been a little wonky for a while. After a patch angled at making patrol spawns equitable for solo players (in other words, harder), it was revealed that said update actually just made solo diver's lives just as much of a living hell as a squad of four. Which didn't seem like the intended effect.
Well, Arrowhead games has taken note and is trying to do something about it, as per a recent announcement by community manager Twinbeard on the game's official Discord.

XDefiant is doing away with Skill-Based Matchmaking: 'We believe that no SBMM is paramount to a fun and varied game'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/xdefiant-is-doing-away-with-skilled-based-matchmaking-we-believe-that-no-sbmm-is-paramount-to-a-fun-and-varied-game/
With XDefiant releasing next week, Ubisoft is providing a slightly better look at the FPS game and what we can expect from it. For the time being, the expectation is a wild-west scenario with every person for themselves because, apparently, there will be no skill-based matchmaking in the casual playlist.

NieR series producer says he's doing something with the key creatives, adds with a chuckle: 'It might be NieR, it might not be NieR'

The latest issue of venerable Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu includes an interview with Square Enix executive officer and NieR series producer Yosuke Saito (thanks Gematsu), in which he reveals they're putting the band back together. Maybe. Possibly. Look, maybe he shouldn't have said anything.

Ghost of Tsushima's crossplay function will launch with a 'beta' tag attached, prompting speculation that Sony is hoping to avoid another PSN-related fiasco

When Ghost of Tsushima launches on PC tomorrow, you won't need a PlayStation Network account to play the game in singleplayer. But you will need one if you want to play Legends, the game's online, crossplay-inclusive multiplayer mode. There is now a question as to whether you will need one permanently, however, as port developer Nixxes has revealed the mode will launch with a 'beta' label attached.

The devs of the underplayed Marvel's Midnight Suns once more blame the game's commercial woes on the cards (I really don't think it was the cards)
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/strategy/the-devs-of-the-underplayed-marvels-midnight-suns-once-more-blame-the-games-commercial-woes-on-the-cards-i-really-dont-think-it-was-the-cards/
Marvel's Midnight Suns is an odd bug—pretty much everyone I've talked to that's played it has liked it, including PC Gamer's Jeremy Peel in his glowing review. Despite everything, though, it didn't sell nearly as well as it needed to, leading to layoffs at developer Firaxis and the departure of its creative lead.
(...)
Ask the game's developers, though, and they'll keep pointing to the cards. During GDC 2024, game director Joe Weinhoffer blamed the game's lack of mainstream success on its card mechanics, and now it's happened again in an interview with VGC
>> Well, I’m not a fan of card based games and that’s the reason I skipped it.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is leaking like a freshly-stabbed Samurai, as main character art sneaks online ahead of imminent reveal

Assassin's Creed Shadows' formal reveal is just a few hours away, but information about the feudal Japan-set sequel is still leaking through the gaps in its Yoroi armour. Two days ago, the game's official YouTube channel accidentally leaked a release date – November 15 this year, while yesterday saw prices for the game and DLC slip onto the Internet.

Isn't it a bit weird that Nvidia is joining with someone else to develop an SoC after all the Tegra designs they've done and keep doing? Why do they need MediaTek's help?Or it's just to have someone ready to use the products in their devices, simplifying the process of getting them to the market?
