And yes, today there's a third part of the news:

Homeworld 3 studio Blackbird Interactive confirms layoffs 'due to economic pressures outside of our control'
https://www.pcgamer.com/homeworld-3-studio-blackbird-interactive-confirms-layoffs-due-to-economic-pressures-outside-of-our-control/
One week after delaying Homeworld 3 until May, Blackbird Interactive has confirmed that an unspecified number of employees have been laid off from the studio.

'Aiming is optional now': Overwatch 2's bigger bullets divide players as they adjust to Blizzard's season 9 rework
https://www.pcgamer.com/overwatch-2-season-9-hitbox-changes/
In Overwatch 2's newest season, every hero shoots bigger bullets and it's driving players mad as they watch clips of the most egregious examples.
It was hard to visualize just how much Blizzard had increased the size of weapon projectiles in Overwatch 2's newest season until a bunch of people started firing at a Tracer bot in the game's practice range. While some don't seem to have changed much, others are so big now that you don't have to aim even remotely close to the enemy's character model to score a hit.

Remember that Silent Hill 2 remake trailer in January that fans didn't like? Bloober Team didn't like it either
https://www.pcgamer.com/remember-that-silent-hill-2-remake-trailer-in-january-that-fans-didnt-like-bloober-team-didnt-like-it-either/
The Silent Hill 2 remake trailer that appeared during Sony's State of Play showcase in January did not make the best possible impression. Fans on Reddit described it as "rough," "wooden," and "straight out of SH Homecoming, which is a PS3 game." Among the people who didn't care for it was, somewhat unexpectedly, Piotr Babieno, CEO of Silent Hill 2 developer Bloober Team, who said in an interview with inwestorzy.tv that the trailer "does not reflect the spirit of the game."

Baldur's Gate 3 players collectively hallucinate a Valentine's Day release for Patch 6, despite Larian's chaotic Pingu posting
https://www.pcgamer.com/baldurs-gate-3-players-collectively-hallucinate-a-valentines-day-release-for-patch-6-despite-larians-chaotic-pingu-posting/
Patch 6 of Baldur's Gate 3 is releasing sometime this week—though if you asked the community around 24-48 hours ago, they'd say it's slated for Valentine's Day. Those of you with an eye on your calendar may notice that date is long-gone, with nary a patch note to be spied.
That's because Larian Studios never actually confirmed the date. Instead, the community simply hallucinated one based on what I can only describe as vibes. Now in fairness, the Baldur's Gate 3 Twitter account did tease us with the phrase "love is in the air in Faerûn", but still.

PlayStation bosses say they want to work more 'proactively' on PC releases, and it sure sounds like Sony is gearing up for more simultaneous debuts like Helldivers 2
https://www.pcgamer.com/playstation-bosses-say-they-want-to-work-more-proactively-on-pc-releases-and-it-sure-sounds-like-sony-is-gearing-up-for-more-simultaneous-debuts-like-helldivers-2/
Boy, it's great to play on PC, isn't it? It's like the medieval Baghdad of videogames: everything from everywhere eventually passes through here, with all sorts of so-called console exclusives from both sides of the Sony/Microsoft divide making the leap to our neutral platform of choice. Nintendo remains in its well-fortified compound, I suppose, but some things never change.
And following a recent Q&A at a Sony financial results briefing (imperfect transcript here), it sounds like things might be getting even better for us when it comes to PlayStation games making the leap to PC. Sony president and PlayStation chairman Hiroki Totoki was asked about the corporation's plans to improve its bottom line, and he had a clear answer: more first-party Sony games on non-Sony platforms like PC.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting a 'competitive multiplayer fighting game' in 2025
https://www.pcgamer.com/avatar-the-last-airbender-is-getting-a-competitive-multiplayer-fighting-game-in-2025/
Avatar: The Last Airbender should be a prime cut of gaming beef. Elements-based martial arts, a wide open world with plenty of established lore, a gorgeous art style, and enough nostalgia to build a franchise on.
Yet despite being such a solid piece of kids' T.V it transcends its demographic, being a good watch for all ages, Avatar's never really had a great game attached to it. Sure, there've been licensed attempts, but they're usually middling at best. There's never been an Avatar game with staying power equal to its roots.
Whether that'll change with a competitive fighting game is still to be seen, but we sure are getting one. As spotted by Gematsu, Maximum Entertainment's recent showcase revealed the project at the tail-end of its roadmap.

Helldivers 2 studio boss says it will 'never' add PVP, and for anyone looking for it 'I recommend Tarkov'
https://www.pcgamer.com/helldivers-2-studio-boss-says-it-will-never-add-pvp-and-for-anyone-looking-for-it-i-recommend-tarkov/
Bad news if you were looking forward to executing your friends in the name of managed democracy: Helldivers 2 creative director and Arrowhead studio CEO Johan Pilestedt says the game will "'never' add a PVP mode," and that you'd be better off looking elsewhere to get your fix of player-vs-player mayhem. For instance, maybe you've heard of a little game called Escape from Tarkov?

This week's Baldur's Gate 3 patch will fix its most annoying little party management inconvenience
https://www.pcgamer.com/baldurs-gate-3-patch-6-party-management/
The next big Baldur's Gate 3 patch is coming this week, and although its kissing-related changes are obviously the star, there's more to it than "improved smooches." Larian announced today that the patch will finally fix a party management inconvenience that I imagine near-universally prompted players to think "ugh, that's slightly annoying" an hour or two into the game.
>> By the way, Hasbro made $90 millions thanks to this game.

Yeah, that made quite a bit of money on BG3 - so much that recently there was some info they are in negotiations with Tencent (who owns 30% of Larian) to sell them exclusive right for making D&D video games.

I heard that rumor/leak some days ago, but I didn't gave it too much credit. Tencent would have to pay Hasbro/WotC a lot of money to make it worth, or them being very desperate for money to accept a low offer.

Generative AI takes its next huge leap forward. Text to video is now actually decent:

Probably still a ways off from being used for proper storytelling as opposed to stock footage/b-roll, but the leaps and bounds this tech is making in such a short time is simply staggering.

The limiting factor is RAM here, you can fit billions of language parameters in an 80GB Hopper for text training but video would be orders of magnitude more complex. Hence all the large language models doing TtV are adopting a mid-term by using their image model and animating based on that. It should be pretty easy to break and make some nice abominations with it :D

SALES /PLAYER COUNT & DEALS

Alan Wake 2 has sold over 1.3 million units, is Remedy’s fastest selling game to date
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/alan-wake-2-has-sold-over-1-3-million-units-worldwide/
A lot of people believed that Alan Wake 2 was a commercial flop. That assumption was based on the fact that Remedy hadn’t revealed the game’s sales. Well, it appears that this is far from the truth. In fact, Alan Wake 2 is Remedy’s fastest selling game to date.
As Remedy revealed a couple of hours ago, the game has sold over 1.3 million units worldwide. Alan Wake 2 sold over 50% more copies and over three times more digital copies in its first two months than Control did in its first four months. So yeah, you can rest assured that Remedy is not in a financial crisis after developing this horror game.
>> I'll admit that I was very skeptical about the success of the game. In any case, as noted in the PCGamer article, the game has still yet to turn a profit.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Unofficial PC Version 1.0.2 brings major performance improvements, fixes 200 textures/shaders and adds IGTI upscaling
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/marvels-spider-man-2-unofficial-pc-version-1-0-2/
The team behind the unofficial PC port of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has released a brand new version of it. According to the team, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PC Brazil Version 1.0.2 brings major performance improvements.
Additionally, this latest version adds support for upscaling modes. From what I’ve seen, there isn’t yet support for DLSS 2 or FSR 2.0. Instead, the game uses IGTI upscaling.
What’s also interesting is that the game now has some graphics settings to tweak. For instance, you can adjust the quality of Geometry, Shadows, Ambient Occlusion, SSR Reflections, Clouds and Fog. The game also supports both DX11 and DX12 (though the devs recommend using the DX11 API).
Not only that but Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PC Brazil V1.0.2 fixes around 200 textures/shaders and adds support for specular lighting to character models. Its team has also shared some updated PC requirements. These new PC specs also list the PC config you’ll need for gaming at 4K.

Ultra niche Skyrim mod lets you become the most potent mage of all: the fist wizard
https://www.pcgamer.com/ultra-niche-skyrim-mod-lets-you-become-the-most-potent-mage-of-all-the-fist-wizard/
Somewhere in a filing cabinet is a contract. On that contract is my name and the name of my employer—PC Gamer's publisher Future PLC—and a job title: "news writer". And look, if someone assassinates the JFK of videogames* I'll be there to break it down for you, but personally? I think my true job is telling you about tiny, mini, minute, trifling little mods that I find very amusing and intensely niche. And guess what, friends? I've got another one for ya.
ELAF Left Hand Shield Bash is a mod from a creator named—get this—ELAF, and it rectifies one of the venerable RPG's most glaring oversights: that players and NPCs cannot use their unarmed left fist to absolutely batter interlopers who get within punching distance. In Todd Howard's world, the left hand is a purely auxiliary extremity: you can use it to wield a shield, a spell, or a second weapon, but if you have nothing in it while you're wielding something in your right hand, you can't use it as a weapon unto itself. Attempting to use an unarmed left hand (while the right is armed) just makes you block.
What kind of world is it that lets you be half a wizard but not half a boxer? A bad one, I reckon, and that's presumably why dear old ELAF has set out to fix it. Using their mod, you'll be able to restore your left fist to its rightful place as a Mack truck full of justice addressed to your enemies' faces, capable of staggering them and knocking them flat. You're still a wizard, really, but a wizard of a new type. The fist wizard, whose grimoire is more of a pamphlet, consisting as it does of one very effective spell delivered fast and repeatedly. No verbal or material components necessary.

For the five people in the world who thought Malenia was too easy, a new mod turns Elden Ring's toughest boss into a 4-phase marathon ordeal including cut attacks and dialogue
https://www.pcgamer.com/for-the-five-people-in-the-world-who-thought-malenia-was-too-easy-a-new-mod-turns-elden-rings-toughest-boss-into-a-4-phase-marathon-ordeal-including-cut-attacks-and-dialogue/
Elden Ring's optional megaboss Malenia is one of those memetic videogame tests of skill now. Like the Emerald Weapon in Final Fantasy 7 or the White Palace in Hollow Knight she represents the ultimate challenge in her game, and might just be the boss design high-water mark in FromSoftware's notoriously boss-centric body of work. So why not make this fight even more difficult?
That's the proposition of Unalloyed Malenia from modder MiquellaTheUnalloyed. The mod further breaks up the fight with two new phases including a moveset change in the first half and a full heal partway through the second, as well as a host of other tweaks. The fight's also been injected with new additions to Malenia's moveset, including the second, secret Waterfowl Dance that never made it into the final game, plus some animations lifted from Sekiro and Bloodborne.
>> There's an almost 8 minutes video of the mod.

New Cyberpunk 2077 Mod Fixes the AMD FSR 3.0 Frame Generation Ghosting Issues
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/new-cyberpunk-2077-mod-fixes-the-amd-fsr-3-0-frame-generation-ghosting-issues/
Modder ‘gramern’ has released a new mod that aims to fix the annoying ghosting issues that PC gamers were getting when using the AMD FSR 3.0 Frame Generation Mod.
Going into more details, the mod eliminates the most irritating frame-gen ghosting behind cars and motorcycles while driving in a 3rd person view. It also manages to slightly reduce ghosting when driving bikes in first-person view. What this mod basically does is disable Frame Interpolation in the area behind the vehicles. However, the rest of the scene is still being interpolated. As such, you can get higher framerates without the ghosting issues. It’s a clever trick that the modder discovered. And, from the looks of it, it works pretty great.
According to gramern, this fix is compatible with both LukeFZ’s and Nukem’s AMD FSR 3.0 Mods. So, if you’ve been using them, you can download this fix from this link.

Nightingale's system requirements reveal it offers an upscaler for every GPU but it'll gobble up 70GB of storage space
https://www.pcgamer.com/nightingales-system-requirements-reveal-it-offers-an-upscaler-for-every-gpu-but-itll-gobble-up-70gb-of-storage-space/
Survival games, what would we do without them? Much less rock punching, I would imagine, but it wouldn't be a year in PC gaming without several of the little tikes, all competing to capture the lightning in a bottle of big survival games releases past.
Potential contender Nightingale is due to release into early access on February 20, and given that it's looking like a graphically complex experience thanks to its use of Unreal Engine 5, it seems you'll have a choice of upscalers to keep the frame rate reasonable while you explore the fae realms.

Gaming's legendary comeback is now free until Monday: No Man's Sky's next big update lets you join its Omega community expedition without spending a cent
https://www.pcgamer.com/gamings-legendary-comeback-is-now-free-until-monday-no-mans-skys-next-big-update-lets-you-join-its-omega-community-expedition-without-spending-a-cent/
No Man's Sky nearly burned up on its atmospheric entry back in 2016—it promised the universe, and only delivered a sort-of-okay space game. PC Gamer gave it a middling 64 at launch in our No Man's Sky review, with Christopher Livingston remarking: "I’ve touched an infinite universe and walked away with some nice vacation photos."
Despite that, developer Hello Games has done a bang-up job polishing it over the years, pouring gallons of elbow grease onto a game that would've otherwise faded into security via a whole heap of updates. Its overall Steam reviews are now "Mostly Positive" on Steam—an unthinkable reality eight years ago.
And now it's free—until February 19, that is. To celebrate the launch of its newest expedition update, Omega, Hello Games is allowing everyone to download the game and play it in a charitably long weekend.

Payday 3 is finally getting an offline mode as Starbreeze CEO admits sales and player numbers are 'significantly lower' than he would like
https://www.pcgamer.com/payday-3-is-finally-getting-an-offline-mode-as-starbreeze-ceo-admits-sales-and-player-numbers-are-significantly-lower-than-he-would-like/
In case there was any doubt, Starbreeze is not happy with how things are working out for Payday 3, the much-troubled heist-shooter that launched in September 2023. In its year-end financial report for 2023, CEO Tobias Sjögren said sales and player numbers are "at significantly lower levels than we would like," but it's not giving up on efforts to turn things around.
(...)
Sjögren said the Payday team would unveil its plans for changes to the game in February (which is the current month) and sure enough, a few hours after the Starbreeze financials were released, Operation Medic Bag was revealed. And it is big: The challenge-based progression system is being scrapped, matchmaking is being overhauled and a quickplay option added, developers are "looking into" bringing back a server browser, the UI is being overhauled, and—this is the big one—an offline mode is coming. Eventually.

Embracer reveals it laid off around 1,400 people in 6 months last year, but don't be a bellyacher—this is all about 'maximising shareholder value'

There may be a wider context of enormous industry layoffs, but the rate and volume of layoffs at Embracer Group over the last year is on an unprecedented scale. Everything seemed on an even keel until the collapse of a mystery $2 billion deal in May last year left its CEO gobsmacked (while the company's COO chose to fall on his sword) and resulted in what at the time was said to be a 5% cut to its global workforce, around 900 people.
(...)
"Embracer still has a few larger structured divestment processes ongoing that could strengthen our balance sheet and further reduce capex. Processes are in mature stages. Certain companies might initiate restructuring before any divestment is announced. Our overruling principle is to always maximize shareholder value in any given situation."

Tomb Raider fans are very excited about new art that seemingly reveals long-awaited 'Unified Lara' design
https://www.pcgamer.com/tomb-raider-fans-are-very-excited-about-new-art-that-seemingly-reveals-long-awaited-unified-lara-design/
Big news for followers of Lara Croft Unification Theory: Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics has revealed a new piece of art for the character that may closely represent what she looks like in the series' next game. This reveal has apparently been anticipated for years, as in 2021 Tomb Raider's franchise director Will Kerslake said that Crystal Dynamics "envision a future for Tomb Raider unfolding after the established adventures" of the original Core Design games and its own prequel trilogy. "[We're] working to unify these timelines," Kerslake said at the time.

A game pretending to be The Day Before has appeared on Steam, and yeah, it's a scam
https://www.pcgamer.com/a-game-pretending-to-be-the-day-before-has-appeared-on-steam-and-im-99-sure-its-a-scam/
Like a zombie you thought you shot in the head but actually just clipped in the thorax, survival game fiasco The Day Before is still twitching unpleasantly in the corner. Except, in this case, it's not really The Day Before at all, but rather a game that for some reason is pretending to be The Day Before, and it's not really a game at all. Allow me to explain.
Update: Even though it was obviously not legit, now it's officially not legit."MytonaFntastic has no affiliation with this page," a rep for the actual Day Before publisher said in a statement provided to PC Gamer. "We have contacted Steam to make them aware of this account."

As announced on social channels, Helldivers 2 is pressing pause on its bug war and pointing fleets of helldivers toward an emerging front. Good news: Palworld players have found yet another way to get one over on the system by violating the laws of god and man alike. Not content with killing the game's bosses using physics-defying staircases, they've got a new trick: butchering their pals without killing them thanks to a well-timed mounting.

Helldivers 2 dropped its first live-service twist last night, as its robotic automaton faction abruptly invaded several human planets, forcing players to heel-turn away from the Terminid frontline to undertake defensive missions halfway across the galaxy. It's likely this event has been planned by developers Arrowhead Game Studios for a while, but according to the studio's CEO Johan Pilestedt, the longer-term future of Helldivers 2 might be very different from what Arrowhead originally planned.

Hasbro has been haemorrhaging money for a while, although WotC (both MTG and D&D) are quite profitable.

Allegedly, Hasbro approached Larian with that offer, but Larian being a small company passed that offer up to Tencent.

Remedy still could have sold more units, had Epic not decided to lock it down to one digital storefront. They could have made more from the combo of EGS, Steam and GoG.

Same goes for Metro. They def could have made 5m or more had it launched on Steam day 1, like it was supposed to.

When I look back on this and compare to to recent sales of say, Palworld or Helldivers 2, it kinda pales in comparison. I know both are AAA games, and the latter 2 aren't, but still, having a decent price point and selling on more than one store does absolutely help you.
