Star Citizen Hangar Module released: walk around your ships, sit in cockpits, but don't fly

Hey, Star Citizen has been released! Well, sort of. A very, very tiny part of the game has been made available to Kickstarter backers, who can now walk around their own personal hangar, marvelling and pawing at the spaceships they were gifted for funding Chris Roberts' space sim.

You can sit in the detailed cockpits and look at the beautifully rendered gauges, but you can't open the hangar bay doors and fly out in search of space adventures quite yet. It's a lot like being 14 again and sitting in the driver's seat of your mum's car in the garage, imagining what it a thrill it might be to drive along the M50. Except my legs never glitched when I was getting in and out of a Nissan Almera.

The Hangar Module is still in early alpha and so naturally comes with a fleet of weird bugs and animation glitches. The CryEngine powered showroom also comes with a hefty minimum requirement, a 64-bit system, 8GB of RAM and a thunderous graphics card.

Players who own at least the $30 Digital Scout pack and one of the five compatible Star Citizen ships can download and enter their hangar at their convenience, at which point they'll be able to explore the area in third or first person. Ships can be entered and cockpits can be sat in, interiors can be admired, exteriors can be scrutinised, locked doors can be frowned at and imaginations can run wild.

It's essentially a showroom and a tech demo rolled into one, but having hard-bought ships exist in some tangible sense has already begun compelling backers to start handing over more cash to expand their collections and improve their virtual hangars.

Star Citizen's Dog Fighting Module is to follow in the coming months, which sounds ever so slightly the more interesting of the two releases.

For Gabe Newell, Greenlight is just a stepping stone to a bigger endgame

"The immediate goal [of Greenlight] was to give us more data in the selection process as we ramp up the tools needed to get us to our longer term goal of improving the overall throughput of the system," Valve founder Gabe Newell tells us.

"Before Greenlight, folks would send mail to us mail or fill out the posted submission form, hope that someone saw it and liked it, and waited in the dark for a reply. While it is not perfect, Greenlight helped us pull that process out of the dark and help with the selection process."

"Much of the evolution of Steam and Greenlight is driven by what the community of gamers and developers tell us they want to see made possible," says Newell. "Right now, we’re focused on expanding the depth and breadth of our catalog. That expansion and addition of content is going to come with a need to innovate and iterate on how customers browse for games and evaluate potential purchases."

The real finishing touches to the world’s best strategy games is that door to infinite possibilities: modding support. Just stroll over to the Steam Workshop and gaze over the pages of mods for Civilization or any of the Total War games. PC bliss. So it’s a little bit of a disappointment that one of the closest strategy games to our hearts - XCOM Enemy Unknown - doesn’t have modding support. But don’t give up hope, this situation may not be forever. “Never say never” claim developer Firaxis.

More after the jump: http://www.pcgamesn.com/firaxis-never-say-never-xcom-mods-it-s-technically-possible

I hope they do add mod support, I would love to get more complex mods for the game. User generated content would go a long way towards expanding the longevity of the game. Especially a map maker as the limited number of maps is one of the key problems I have with XCOM vs the origonal seeing the same exact locations over and over really kills the replayability. Add a couple hundred more user created ones would be great.

Zoned Out: Eyes On With Survarium

Last week I finally got a chance to meet two heroes of the Stalker years, Joe Mullin and Oleg Yavorsky, who are now working hard as Vostok on the free-to-play shooter, Survarium. There’s an immediate tension when you mention the F word, and I think the legacy that resides in Survarium means that Vostok have to go that extra mile to prove themselves. Good looking shooters with a touch of persistence are becoming increasingly common in this new era. That said, Survarium is looking promising, and I was fascinated to see the game in play for the first time.

Also for those looking for good deals on digital PC games make sure you bookmark http://www.deals4downloads.com if you haven't already. They agrigate the cheapeast prices for games across all the major retailers Steam, Origin, Gamersgate, Amazon, GreenManGaming etc. Shows the cheapest price that has been offered for each game etc. And you can set up alerts for games that you are waiting to go on sale. A great resource for buying cheap games you never play.

Star Citizen crowdfunding total surpasses $17 million

Star Citizen has passed $17 million in funding, up from the $15 million announced on August 2. The space-sim from Cloud Imperium Games, at press times, stands at $17,077,414 total making it most player-funded project to date. The new milestone gives backers a ship upgrade containing an engine modifier and a battlecruiser ship class. Should it reach $18 million, an “exclusive star system” will be granted to supporters. Star Citizen is slated for release on PC in late 2014. Thanks, Gamespot.

Bugbear has announced Next Car Game is now available for pre-order, and the customer’s purchase goes “right into funding the development of the game.” Early access to Next Car Game will be given to all pre-order customers, much like a paid-beta, and it starts around the $25 mark and goes all the way up yo $1000. A video featuring the team discussing the racer is below. The game will be developed for PC first with console versions both next-gen and/or current-gen possible later on if enough money is raised.

Polygon reports Hardware: Shipbreakers has been retitled as Homeworld: Shipbreakers thanks to a deal between Gearbox and Blackbird Interactive.

The deal, which was signed at the developer version of PAX last week, also includes financial backing; although Blackbird is privately funded, it did not have the resources to complete the project, which Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said required “many millions of dollars more”. Blackbird is hiring more staff as a result of the financing.

Pitchford said he and Gearbox chief creative officer Brian Martel would rather spend the company’s money on helping Homeworld: Shipbreakers come to life as a quality game than blow it “on a bunch of super cars”, and noted that Gearbox itself is not well-equipped to develop a sci-fi RTS.

Blackbird CEO Rob Cunningham said Gearbox’s acquisition of the Homeworld IP in THQ’s dissolution was timely, occurring just as the team began to think about looking for a partner to complete Hardware. Blackbird had bid for the Homeworld property itself, and struck up a friendly relationship with Gearbox after reaching out to congratulate it on winning.

Gearbox still intends to deliver remakes of the first two Homeworld games.

Since announce, Hardware: Shipbreakers has been an obvious successor to Relic’s Homeworld series, and Blackbird boasts several former Relic employees among its ranks.
