Warlocks’ a co-op brawler programmed by a man with no hands

Comment

The PC’s seeing a surge in shared screen co-op games of late and Warlocks looks to be a great addition to their number. Allowing for up to four-player local co-op and online play, it’s on you and your friends to battle with hordes of beasts and bosses as you fight through a series of worlds overtaken by the evil’s armies.

Throw into the mix procedurally generated loot and ten different warlocks, each with their own moves sets, and you’ve a whole pile of fun.

Oh, and the entire thing was programmed by a man with no hands.

Quite the feat.

There’s a rumour going around that Markus ‘Notch’ Persson is setting up to sell Minecraft to Microsoft for $2 billion. What’s new to that rumour is that apparently it wasn’t Microsoft who approached Notch but the other way round. It looks like he wants to get the property off his hands.

Speaking at Pax Prime Gearbox’s Steve Gibson talked about the current state of Homeworld Remastered. He says that the company started by thinking it would be a pretty quick project, releasing the original Homeworld with high res textures and some model work.

It’s becoming a lot more than that as the interview and video reveals.

Elite: Dangerous voice pack lets you talk to your ship

Comment

Since watching Knight Rider as a kid I’ve wanted to chat with my car, Elite: Dangerous fans have skipped that generation of vehicle and let you talk to your spaceship.

The Elite: Dangerous Voice Pack loads your ship with an AI entity called ASTRA who you can instruct with voice commands. Primarily she can fly your ship but she also has a pretty big database that you can query at any time, the GalaXapediA.

Garry’s Mod sales figures just topped 6,000,000 copies

Comments1

Garry’s Mod has sold more than 6,000,000 copies. That’s a whole lot of folk poking and pulling at the faces of Valve’s characters. Garry Newman, founder of developer Facepunch Studios, is reported to have celebrated the news by buying three fist-sized balls of cocaine and a bouncy castle.

Newman went onto break down the sales figures into a bit more detail.

The Sims 4: I trapped a man in a box and forced him to learn to play the piano

Comments5

The Sims 4 allows you to virtually recreate any human being, from their hair colour and whether they walk a bit funny, down to the beautiful nuances of their souls and how their skeleton tastes. The Sims you control can have skills and hobbies that they can practise and improve over time. Besides clicking on a postman over and over again until he has sex with you, improving these skills is one of the few things to do in the game.

But how quickly can you drag a sausage-fingered sim from amateur keyboard smasher to virtuoso pianist? I found out by locking one in a room and not letting him out until he'd learned to play. This is his story.

Fable Anniversary got a lukewarm reception when it launched in Xbox 360 way back in February, but Lionhead’s offering a little bit more with the PC version: modding support.

On top of the HD textures, improved lighting and tweaked UI, Fable Anniversary on PC will come with a version of the Unreal Engine 3 editor, allowing players to fiddle around with the art and animation, putting their own stamp on the decade-old RPG.

Surprise! Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is going to be a weekly episodic mystery

Comment

I was extremely excited when Capcom announced Resident Evil: Revelations 2, the sequel to the best Resident Evil game since the fourth one. It really is. It's great. And it's even - amazingly - brilliant on the 3DS, though the PC version is the one you should really play. But the publisher has now released a launch schedule and pricing model that has replaced the initial excitement with just a wee bit of confusion.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 will be an episodic game, split into four parts across a single month. And it will cost you more to buy them all together. What.

Tim Clark at 12:36 on 12 September 2014

Larian Studios founder writes about Divinity: Original Sin's success, what comes next

Phil Savage at 00:06 on 13 September 2014

The next few months are set to be dominated by RPGs—both big, and big but with a smaller, crowdfunded budget. But whatever the future holds, the genre has already had one great success this year. Divinity: Original Sin was uncompromising in its old-school design, and in being so, provided exactly what many PC RPG fans were looking for. In a new blog post, Swen Vincke, the founder of developer Larian Studios, writes about the game's success, and hints at what will come next.

Elite: Dangerous’ budget was originally £8m. Kickstarter made up less than a quarter of that

Developers often say during their Kickstarter campaigns that they’re footing a large part of a game’s development bill themselves. In Elite: Dangerous’ case that turns out to mean more than £6 million.

More than that, since the campaign completed that budget has risen “by quite a lot,” according to studio founder David Braben.

Magicka 2 karaoke trailer is terribly awkward and completely wonderful

If you want to see some spell-flinging, robe-wearing action from Magicka 2, you’ll need to listen to Totally Not A Vampire, Vlad, doing a little karaoke number. Clearly it’s a lesser known European hit from the ‘80s. Paradox sure knows how to trailer.

This one’s a wee bit sad.

Elite: Dangerous is a wee bit pricey at the moment, though certainly a lot less expensive than it was during alpha. But don’t fret! The launch version won’t leave you homeless and destitute.

Frontier Developments has announced the cost of the release version, and it’ll only set you back £39.99/$59.99. There’s a digital pre-order edition in the works, too. It’s a wee bit cheaper and comes with a few treats.

Something just occurred to me, if these cards come woth 4GB standard now I wonder if any manufacturer will do a 8GB version. I mean it would be absolutely worthless in terms of performance unless you were planning to run 4X SLI and run high end games at like 8k. But they might catch some uninformed people with the whole "oh PS4 has 8GB GDDR5 so I need that on PC to get better performance" angle lol.

Saints Row IV: Gat Out of Hell creative director Steve Jaros leaves for Valve

Saints Row IV’s fifth DLC, Gat out of Hell, will be out in January but without Steve Jaros, Volition Studios’ creative director. After a decade with the studio he’s moving on to a new job at Valve.

He made the announcement on Twitter but kept quiet about what his future at Valve held. I’ve my fingers crossed that we’ll be seeing a giant purple dildo grafted into Half-Life 3. Of course, that’ll likely lead to a further six year delay.

For us in the UK summer’s coming to an end and Autumn draws near, in Neverwinter it’s the decidedly toastier Season of Dragons. Technically it's a season in the sense of a storyline, like a television season, not anything to do with weather or geography. This series of updates has charted the rise of the Cult of the Dragons, a nefarious group who worship big, winged, scaly beasts.

The next stage of the season sees the cultists attack the city of Neverwinter and Cryptic have finally revealed what part you’ll play in its defense.
