Elite Dangerous has lots of ways for would be space pilots to make a living. There are those that peaceably trade goods across the galaxy or, at the other end of the spectrum, hire themselves out as a mercenary and lend their guns to the highest bidder.
Frontier have turned exploration into the middle route.
Explorers will search the distant ends of the galaxy, scanning planets for minerals and artefacts, taking in the glory of the universe. Bringing those secrets back to civilisation. But, if anyone gets in their way they’ll blow two holes through their life support system.

While Dungeons & Dragons Online is the epitome of fantasy the latest update throws in a little scifi. Sort of. The Mirror of Glamering lets you clone the look of of an armour set and turn it into a cosmetic item, allowing you to stay fashionable while fighting dragons.
Besides its look, armour’s received a complete overhaul “aimed at improving the ability of melee-focused characters to face some of DDO's toughest challenges, and bring increased balance between melee, ranged, and spell-casting characters.”
To that end a new “Melee Power, Ranged Power, Magical Resist Rating” attribute have been added to gear and Turbine have made adjustments to Physical Resist Rating”

Both the Alien: Isolation preview events I’ve attended started the same way, someone telling me: “Don’t run from the alien. You won’t escape.” The AI xenomorph will hear you and give chase, cutting you down before you can get away.
Rather than tell those of you eagerly anticipating October's release of Alien: Isolation, Creative Assembly have made video showing what happens when you run.

I can’t help but marvel at DCS: MiG-21 and the Digital Combat Simulator series: there are few games that so readily embrace depth and complexity over making something immediately playable. For someone who grew up on the Ace Combat series, spending ten minutes getting my plane ready to take off seems alien to me but for wing nuts the prospect of fuel checks and brake line tests is what gets them up in the morning.
I imagine, too, that when you master getting such a complicated vehicle into the air, managing to bag a bogey is significantly more satisfying, too.
The DCS: MiG-21 launch trailer is enough to make me consider starting to learn.

Until now, indie studio Wyrmbyte have run Dragons and Titans much like the other MOBAs you know on Steam. Players aren’t charged for the privilege of fighting in its lanes - instead, they’re gently nudged with offers of new weapons, mounts and avatars at affordable prices.
But Wyrmbyte are about to move in the opposite direction to the games industry at large - they’re going to shift from microtransactions to a flat $20 fee.
“Is this the greatest idea ever or the worst idea ever?,” laughs Wyrmbyte president, Scott Brown. “It’s a little bit scary. But it’s what all of us as players wanted, and so I can’t believe that we feel that differently than other people.”

I sacrificed a lot of animals - and by animals I do mean adorable babies - in an effort to bribe the powers that be into providing us with more fantasy 4X games. It all worked out, of course. This year saw the excellent Warlock II and Age of Wonders III swallow up countless hours of my life. And now we’ve got Endless Legend on the horizon.
Rob took a look at Endless Legend at GDC a while back and ended up being rather impressed with how Amplitude combined the pace and presentation of Endless Space with new, imaginative ideas. It’s been doing a stint in Early Access, but is on its way out the door. You’ll be able to get your hands on it on September 18th.

With a name like Unity, it’s not surprise that Ubisoft is pushing the co-op aspect of the latest Assassin’s Creed. The Brotherhood mode has already been shown off, so now it’s time to delve into the Heist mode.
Creative director Alex Amancio and an assassin chum slink through underground catacombs in order to steal some lovely Templar treasure in a new developer walkthrough. And it’s not at all clear why the entire mission can’t be completed solo.

Riot has introduced a new featured game mode for League of Legends: Ascension. And it’s all about getting unlimited power - which is lovely.
Ascension sees two teams of five pitted against each other, both attempting to defeat the Ancient Ascendant Xerath and steal his big ol’ buff. That power makes a champion vastly more powerful, though not so much that the opposing team can’t take him down with a coordinated assault.

If you want to take FIFA 15 and the new Ignite Engine for a spin, then you’re in luck, because you can now download the demo and kick all of those balls into those nets and get points for doing so.
But what happens when you kick a ball into a net? Well, you celebrate. And apparently previous FIFA games did not offer the breadth of celebration options that FIFA 15 does. You can learn how to pull of these super moves in a new video tutorial from EA.

MOBAs tend to be pretty light when it comes to the narrative - perhaps appropriately. Sure, League of Legends has oodles of lore behind the scenes, Infinite Crisis draws on decades of comics and Smite has thousands of years of mythology to play with, but this rarely comes to the forefront of the games themselves.
In the case of Smite, that might all be about to change.

Starbound is great. I have described it, in groups of serious adults, as “dead brilliant,” like I was an excited child. Do people even say “dead brilliant” anymore? Well I do. But very rarely. That’s why it’s in our list of the 15 best sandbox games on PC. But developer Chucklefish isn’t resting on its laurels, no.
Four members of the studio are now at working making a co-operative, somewhat competitive pirate action adventure game: Wayward Tide. Swashbuckling adventures are dead brilliant.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor has wormed its way into the list of upcoming games that I really can’t wait to get my hands on - something I really didn’t expect when it was first announced. Our Jules took it for a spin a wee while ago, and he’s of a similar opinion. Go and devour his Shadow of Mordor preview.
As well as looking like an entertaining action romp with some intriguing systems, the game also boasts two of the most prolific voice actors in the industry: Troy Baker and Nolan North. They make an adorable couple, and you can take a look at them chatting about their respective characters in this here video.
