Become a recruitment mercenary with the EVE Online Recall Program

Comment

Space can be a lonely place: it’s big, most of it is empty of things larger than a particle and no one can hear you scream. If you’re an EVE Online player, and you lost a beloved wingman whose witty banter you miss, or you long for the days when you used to play games of cat and mouse with a wiley nemesis, you can now bribe them back into the game.

CCP has set up a Recall Program, allowing pilots, tycoons, miners and CEOs to send invites to a lapsed players, giving them seven days of free game time, potentially netting themselves rewards in the process.

The Elder Scrolls Online wants to remind you it's launching today with a flashy trailer

Comment

Did you know that The Elder Scrolls Online launches today? You probably do, since Jeremy just mentioned it a few hours ago. Yep, haughty elves, shifty lizard folk and buff orcs will be running around killing things for the promise of experience and loot pretty damn soon.

ZeniMax Online have put together another striking, but utterly unrepresentative, trailer for you to gawp at to celebrate the launch. Plaster your eyes all over it inappropriately, below.

Battlefield 4's elusive megalodon finally discovered hanging out in a Naval Strike map

Comments1

For a good long while, intrepid shark hunters have been searching for the megalodon, the giant prehistoric shark, in Battlefield 4. There have been suggestions that it was hiding in the water since not long after the game’s launch, and despite finding further clues, players were still unable to find something that seems far to big to hide.

As it turns out, this was because it was lurking in the waters of one of the Naval Strike maps, Nansha Strike, the DLC expansion which has only just been released. But the big beastie has finally been discovered, and it’s quite the sight to behold.

Better together: ArenaNet spills the beans on how Guild Wars 2's megaservers will affect other features

Comment

ArenaNet announced the Guild Wars 2 megaserver system a couple of days ago, as part of the April feature pack. It matches players from the same region with the same interests - in terms of how they play Guild Wars - and chucks them all into the same map. And if a chum is on a different map, you can just jump to their version of the world and play together.

But a big, sweeping change like this naturally impacts other aspects of the game, such as world bosses, map events and guilds. ArenaNet has broken down how these features will evolve to make them fit with the megaserver system.

Goodbye GameSpy: the online service will shut down on May 31st

Comments1

It seems like it’s the year for unpleasant multiplayer and online services getting shut down. The universally loathed GFWL is winding down, and now GameSpy Technologies will have the life drained out of it come May 31st.

It’s not the “bring out the champagne” moment the announcement of GFWL’s demise was, but I’m certainly not going to miss seeing “Powered by GameSpy” flash before my eyes.

Alien: Isolation's audio is dynamic, but can you hear screaming in space?

Comment

There are many things that go into making a truly terrifying horror experience, but for me it’s the audio that has the greatest impact. The slamming of doors and rats scratching at the walls in Amnesia, the mad ranting and horrible threats of Outlast’s twisted inmates - they make me want to rip my headphones off and switch the lights back on.

In its latest developer diary, Creative Assembly offers a glimpse at their sound design process for Alien: Isolation, a game that we all hope is every bit as sweat-inducing and worrying as Ripley’s first encounter with the glossy, black xenomorph.

Down-and-out detective Tex Murphy returns on April 22nd in glorious FMV

Comment

Of all the things I imagined returning through the magic of crowd-funding, FMV adventure games weren’t high on the list. They made up such a huge part of my youth, the likes of Phantasmagoria, Sherlock Holmes, The Beast Within, so the thought of never seeing their ilk again was a crying shame.

But here we are, in the glorious future-era of 2014, and we’re about to get another Tex Murphy game, of all things, and it’s going to be in glorious FMV. I’ve missed the downtrodden detective from post-apocalyptic San Francisco terribly.

The Bytes Fantastic: Mind – Path To Thalamus

By Adam Smith on April 4th, 2014 at 6:00 pm.

The trailer for Mind: Path To Thalamus is a dream-like series of beautiful landscapes, with a backing of melancholy piano and sorrowful synths. Promising environmental manipulation as well as a jolly good stroll through the corridors of memory and (of course) regret, it reminds me of Linger in Shadows, the demoscene project that broke through onto PS3. It all begins with a voiceover, which I managed to ignore, but it ends with another snippet of monologue that croaked out of my speakers, along with the mental image of a beatnik sitting on a windowsill and sucking on a Gauloises while contemplating the shape of the smoke, and pondering how fascinating he must look from afar. Mind is heading to the Rift.

The Art Of Spacelunking: Blackhole

By Ben Barrett on April 5th, 2014 at 10:00 am.

Obeying Newtonian laws of physics very much isn’t in these days. If you’re not manipulating Zero-Point Energy or jetpacking through windows, you better have skyscraper-leaping superpowers or that most impossible of things, the “double jump.” Given that it takes part through, possibly in, one of the least understood and most terrifying phenomenons in space, Blackhole at least has a good excuse. Gravity pads are the particular brand of un-reality in this instance, changing the way the nameless space-waiter main character and his AI companion Auriel are affected while leaving everything else the same. There’s a massive trailer showing off not only how the game plays, but also some impressive voice acting and writing. Warp through to it below.

A Long Title: The Weird Story of Waldemar the Warlock

By Ben Barrett on April 5th, 2014 at 12:00 pm.

Well, well, well. What we have here is a wonderfully wicked point and click – The Weird Story of Waldemar the Warlock would like to welcome the contents of your wallet, asking £40,000 via wonted means. While the video is weak, as you will see below, it warranted further investigation and the game footage that was shown woke a curiosity in me for what the developers will do. Come in my wake past the wall and wow at the wonders within.

Turtle Rock Studios: Evolve’s Goliath Inspired By Godzilla & King Kong, Lighting Techniques Detailed

Turtle Rock Studios held an IAMA event on Reddit in which it was able to answer a number of questions until the event was cancelled. The bad news is that lots of answers were deleted (God knows why, though the development team promised to hold another IAMA in the future). The good news is that some new details about its latest title, Evolve, have been brought to light. Continue reading

Unreal Engine 4 – New Realistic Rendering Room Tech Demo Will Leave You Speechless

Epic Games has released a new beta build for Unreal Engine 4 in which the company included a new tech demo, showcasing realistic indoor rendering. This tech demo uses Unreal Engine 4′s Global Illumination techniques, and sports some really high-res textures. Naturally, the demo also shows realistic reflections, something we’ve been witnessing lately in pretty much all Unreal Engine 4 videos. It looks spectacular, so make sure to give it a go! AMD Teases Radeon R9 295 X2 In A New Trailer, Incoming Announcement

Remember our April’s Fools joke about R290Xtreme? Holy Batman, we were partially right about it. Okay okay, the new GPU from AMD will not require a 2000W PSU but as the red team unveiled, R9 295 X2 is real and will be a dual-GPU card (that will – most probably – challenge Nvidia’s Titan Z). Or at least that’s what we hope. AMD will be revealing this new GPU really soon and has released a teaser trailer for it that can be viewed below. Enjoy! Continue reading

Watch_Dogs – New Screenshots Showing The Game’s Inventory System

Alongside the Steam page for Watch Dogs, Ubisoft has also unveiled two new screenshots for its upcoming open world title, showing the game’s inventory system. Contrary to other games pausing the action of a game, Watch_Dogs will feature a floating window via which players can access Aiden’s inventory. It looks cool, and let’s hope that each frame won’t be taking us on static pages like those found in other titles, thus pulling us away from the game itself. Enjoy! Continue reading

Watch_Dogs – Available For Pre-Order On Steam, System Requirements Are Still Not Final

A couple of hours ago, the Steam page for Ubisoft’s upcoming open-world title, Watch_Dogs, got launched via which players can pre-order the game. Watch_Dogs PC comes with a 17% discount and while some PC system specs have been listed, it seems that they are not the final ones. Continue reading

Frostbyte 3 is a pretty good looking engine, I wonder if it will be as buggy as BF4 lol. It will be interesting to see if DA: I or TW3 ends up looking better

TW3 is at a bit of a dissadvantage being a proper opwn world, but on the other hand DA is cross gen.

Dragon Age may end up looking better, but I highly doubt it will end up being the better game.

Bioware games are usually relatively light on the bugs, that I found at-least.
Dice doesn't have such a good history however, 2142 for instance... BAH

I think it will still be hard to top the epicness that was Origins, still, probably my most awaited game this year, hopefully we get some mod support!
