Battlefield 4: Naval Strike's four maps will look like this, if you squint a bit

Comment

Naval Strike is the name of Battlefield 4’s next round of maps - the conveyor belt for which has started rolling at full speed again now DICE have made a concerted effort to tackle the game’s myriad bugs.

Its headline feature is a new Carrier Assault mode DICE have been telling everyone is an explicit tribute to Battlefield 2142’s Titan mode. There’s one image of that, and three others, below.

Sci-fi sub club: Wildstar release date set for June 3, pre-orders start next week

Wildstar might turn out to be the only MMO worthy of the designation ‘WoW clone’ - a hoverboard-powered attempt to rejustify the subscription from a team of former Blizzard designers at Carbine. It’s out before the Summer, on June 3.

Peter Molyneux apologises for Godus, went “back to the drawing board” for new update

Comments4

This is quite extraordinary. 22cans have pushed out Godus 2.0 today - their first update since the game was uploaded to Steam Early Access in October. And with it they’ve posted a video in which Peter Molyneux - accompanied by a minion making noises of agreement - says sorry for the sorry state Godus was released in.

When Godus was first pitched on Kickstarter, the promise was that players would enjoy reshaping an environment to new ends; the fact that they didn’t has meant their feedback has “literally reshaped” the nature of the game.

Nords are niche: Elder Scrolls Online is not an MMO for "everybody who plays games"

Comment

Here’s a slice of received wisdom you can expect to see on a Total War loading screen one of these days: subscriptions are only for niche MMOs, like Eve.

So what’s The Elder Scrolls Online doing with one? Well, here’s the thing: according to Bethesda marketing man Pete Hines, it’s sort of a niche MMO.

“We’re not trying to make a game that everybody who plays games will automatically buy,” he said.

The Hearthsteed and its astral wings can be yours very easily. All you need to do is earn the “Mount Up!” achievement in Hearthstone by winning three rounds, and it’s all yours.

2K casting call suggests that Mafia III could be set in Louisiana

Comment

2K recently put out a casting call for voice over and motion capture actors for an unnamed project that could be Mafia III. The third installment of the open-world crime series was believed to have been in development at 2K Czech, where the excellent first and uneven second games were developed. But layoffs and resource shuffling at that studio suggests that this may no longer be the case.

While the game was not named in the casting call, the character descriptions make it clear that the title will tackle the criminal underworld, and a period setting is suggested by the mention of racial segregation. Take a look at the character biographies below.

Star Wars Attack Squadrons beta impressions: a free-to-play attempt at reviving X-Wing

Comments1

There’s a surprising amount of weight on Star Wars Attack Squadrons’ shoulders. It’s the first Star Wars game to be made under the gaze of new custodian Disney, the first Star Wars game to be developed since LucasArts fell, and the first Star Wars flight game on PC since 2001’s Starfighter. Not only that, but the PC community harbours a deep love for classic Star Wars spacecraft sims X-Wing and Rogue Squadron. For Attack Squadrons - a free-to-play multiplayer browser game - to soar past fans with its hull intact is a challenge tougher than any exhaust port torpedo drop.

But as I pull back hard with my X-Wing to escape a target-locked concussion missile, only to swoop back in behind its sender and blast him to phosphorous-white smithereens with laser blasts, I realise perhaps that Attack Squadron - with its 16 players and deep-space battlegrounds - may be the X-Wing vs TIE Fighter successor nobody expected.

Blizzard shines the spotlight on Heroes of the Storm's heavily armed Assassin, Tychus the Terran Marine

Comment

It’s going to be very, very strange mowing down the likes of the archdemon Diablo or huge murlocs with a gargantuan minigun while snugly ensconced in bulky Terran Marine armour. But that’s the sort of ridiculous match-ups that Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm promises; a game where all the iconic characters from the studios huge franchises clash, regardless of how little it makes sense. It’s as exciting as it is silly.

Blizzard’s thrown up a spotlight for Tychus Findlay, one of Starcraft II’s Terran chaps. He’s a big ‘ol powerhouse, and in Heroes of the Storm he fills the role of the Assassin, the damage dealer.

Starcraft 2 senior game designer not comfortable with making big changes

Comment

Starcraft 2’s senior game designers David Kim just finished up a Reddit AMA on Heart of the Swarm balance.

He managed to answer a lot of questions, and covered a lot of ground. But for anyone hoping that the team will start making bigger updates or big changes when the new expansions drops will be disappointed.

The point reiterated the most during the AMA was that Blizzard’s Starcraft 2 team are unlikely to ever change their minds about the effectiveness of large changes. And Kim seems quite risk averse, unwilling to make a change unless it’s “completely awesome.”

Mirror's Edge and Dear Esther artist joins Valve to "be around people"

Comment

Rob Briscoe is one of two freelancers who’ve found a polite sort of fame after their work on Mirror’s Edge. While Rhianna Pratchett went on to scribe Tomb Raider (and in smaller font, Thief), Briscoe went on to splash Dear Esther with a liberal varnish of art and design.

The success of Dear Esther has allowed him to continue on in indiedom indefinitely - but an “increasing feeling of isolation” while working on a Unity port for the game has led him to seek a job in which he can be “in the presence of people”. Genius people, at Valve.

Dark Souls 2 PC delay will mean higher resolutions, better framerates and key mapping

Comments1

The early days of a Something Souls game are completely unique. There are no wikis to consult, nor spoilers to overhear. Players stumble through graveyards of one palette or another for the first time, sacrificing themselves to learn the monster movesets others will come to memorise.

It’s a bit of a shame PC gamers have been robbed of that period for Dark Souls 2, which launched on the consoles this week. We’ll have to wait till - my goodness, is that right - April 25 to enter the land of the soon-to-be-dead.

But better late, as in the late Dent Arthur Dent, than never. Producer Tak Miyazoe says the delay has ensured Dark Souls 2 will be better on PC than its “half-assed” predecessor.

Funcom talk police investigation: "We were back in full production the day after they came"

Funcom started off the year in lights for all the wrong reasons. They’d been raided by Økokrim, Norway’s financial crime unit, the headlines wailed, who were investigating one charge of market manipulation and another of wrongfully-filed insider information from around the time of The Secret World’s release.

After a short, dreadful silence, Funcom told the press that all was well; that they were cooperating and remained “committed” to The Secret World. And now a more recent account suggests that despite the ongoing investigations, it “all blew over very fast”. Funcom’s coders are coding again.

Gong Home: Steam are selling BAFTA nominees at cut price

The gaming BAFTAs happened last night - and until the Oscars get a little more lax with their licensing, it’s pretty much the best gongfest we have. Our Fraser was disappointed by the scarcity of surprises - but I consider any evening that celebrates PC indie things like Gone Home and Papers, Please a good one.

You’ll find both of those games on sale on Steam today, uncoincidentally, alongside their fellow nominees - apart from GTA Online, which isn’t on PC and definitely wouldn’t be its best multiplayer game if it was.

Elite: Dangerous — Alpha 3 adds a station, systems and hyperspace jumps, is also brilliant

Comments1

I've been playing Alpha 2, the next to latest version, of Elite: Dangerous, zooping around in my spaceboat, swishing between asteroids and kablooshing enemy ships in its series of single player combat missions. Elite, it turns out, is really, seriously good. It controls remarkably similarly to the original game, with dogfights consisting of a rolling and pitching your craft, twisting and arcing through space in your attempts to keep your target in view. But at the same time it introduces some of the kinetic spirit of Frontier, Elite's sequel, with less rigid physics and a touch more Newtonian space-skidding giving combat real momentum and punch. Braben's development team have worked some real nostalgia black magic here, merging our fuzzy memory of how Elite used to be with a modern, uncompromised space combat sim.

Alpha 2 is tremendous, yes, but the soon to be released Alpha 3 is another beast entirely. Alpha 3 dumps on Alpha 2 from orbit. Alpha Poo, you'll be calling it before long.

I've been playing the latest version of Elite: Dangerous, and here's what's up with it.

Grudge match: Rome II DLC pits Carthage against Rome in the Second Punic War

Comments4

The Second Punic War is ripe for dramatisation, so it’s odd that Hollywood hasn’t picked it apart. Maybe it’s because the “bad guys” win in the end. Rome initiates yet another war against its old adversaries, Carthage, kicking off a conflict that engulfs the Mediterranean. So the Carthaginian general, Hannibal, crosses the Alps with ferocious elephants and angry Gauls, beating up Romans up and down Italy.

Of course, it didn’t end well for Carthage. The Romans took back their fallen cities, chucked the North African powerhouse out of Iberia and eventually turned once mighty Carthage into yet another client state. In Total War: Rome II’s new DLC, Hannibal at the Gates, you’ll have a chance to change the fortunes of Carthage. Or you can put yourself in Scipio’s shoes, trying to make the war play out just as it did historically.

Night-mayor nearly over: SimCity offline mode is just a spot of "final testing" away

Comments4

“Too little, too late” is the refrain I hear most often in the comment threads for articles like this one - and perhaps that’s true. Maxis certainly have a long way to go in re-earning our faith, and there are still inherent problems with SimCity’s simulation that will likely never be solved - at least not in this iteration.

But in the very near future, it’s going to become a game you can play on the train, or for 40 minutes during a power cut until your laptop battery drains to nothing. Which is something, right?

Previously only available to Premium members, Battlefield 4’s platoon system separated the haves from the have nots. DICE couldn’t have some random pleb making a platoon. That would be like any old nutter creating a religion or leading a political party. Preposterous.

Introducing JetGetters, A Fusion Of Just Cause 2 And BF3

By Nathan Grayson on March 14th, 2014 at 5:00 pm.

“We are about to reveal a new game!” No Time To Explain dev/burgeoning indie publisher Alex Nichiporchik told me over Skype. Almost reflexively, I braced myself for an excited slurry spew about some crazy new platformer or a zany comedy adventure or an emotional tale that would rock me to my very core. “It’s basically a fusion of Just Cause 2 and Battlefield 3,” he proceeded to tell me. “…Oh,” I replied, briefly mistaking a flock of birds fluttering by outside for a car tethered to a plane with a wildman surfing atop it, as I often do. “Go on.” And so he did. Go below to find out about JetGetters‘ plane-jacking antics, its accompanying Kickstarter (because of course), how TinyBuild hopes to make dogfights more interesting, shifting levels, purposefully limited player counts, and why TinyBuild’s not on board with free-to-play.

End Of Nations Devs Reveal Throwback RTS Grey Goo

By Nathan Grayson on March 14th, 2014 at 12:00 pm.

When I first heard about Grey Goo, I assumed it was some kind of World-of-Goo-style puzzler, except all gritty and probably about a goo blob with No Family, No Loyalties, And Nothing Left To Lose.
