28 and 32 cores, wow. I figured AMD would just jump to 24 at best. Makes me rethink whether or not next gen consoles would bother with anything less than 8.

8-cores will be fine for next gen, it's what will be mainstream.
The bulk of your gains will come from the stupidly massive increase in per-core performance next gen.

Wonderful.

So how about the high core count CPUs announced by Intel and AMD.
Yeah, they're pretty much just server chips, but it is still pretty cool.
32 cores for desktops, what a time to be alive.
Apparently not all four dies will have direct access to RAM.
Obviously the 28 core Intel chip won't be running at 5GHz when you take it home.

https://www.anandtech.com/show/12893/intels-28core-5-ghz-cpu-coming-in-q4

That Intel chip needed a lot of cooling, and I do really mean a lot:

http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/that-28-core-cpu-that-intel-showed-at-computex-it-needs-some-cooling.html
Early this week Intel announced its 28-core processor at Computex. A remarkable achievement all by itself. They had been able to clock it towards 5 GHz even, boasting a CB 7334 Cinebech score. However, as it now turns out, that CPU needed a bit of cooling.
In fact, the processor was cooled with an industrial chiller. So Intel after the demos quickly dismantled the setup as they had previously installed the 28-core chip on Gigabyte and ASUS demo systems earlier that day. After a few hours, these photos (and I honestly do not know who took it as it went viral everywhere, but credits to you man) have been posted on the web.

I mean, we all understand that 28 cores will need a bit of cooling, but I wasn't expecting that! It's a bit hard to see but that is a Hailea HC chiller and also spotted, a 1600 Watt power supply. 1 That water chiller pumps 1500-4000 liters per hour and uses R124 refrigerant to cool down the coolant towards 4 degrees Celsius. If you look up the specs, it has a cooling power of 1770W. The motherboard was using a lga3647-socket, which is a Xeon processor socket. That's industrial heavy duty cooling. Reportedly the unlocked 28-core proc was a Xeon Platinum Skylake-SP processor. That proc with its default 2.5 GHz clocks does just over 200 Watts in power draw under stress. Try to imagine the numbers when overvolted and tweaked to 5 GHz. In all fairness, it is 28 cores at that frequency.

As for the AMD processor, well, it was kind of expected, right? The current Threadripper CPUs have 2x 8-core dies with two dummy modules, so with the jump to a smaller and more efficient process it makes sense to get rid of the dummy parts and put another 2x 8-core parts in it. What is a surprise is that not all cores will be able to access the RAM, at least at the same time. It won't be good for its performance.

Yes, I already knew this.
5GHz on 28 cores (all core) is insane.
We aren't there yet.

24/32 core Threadrippers was the obvious next step, but I am still happy to see them announced.
The memory thing sucks, but it seemed unavoidable.
AMD probably made the right call there.
Hey, you need to leave something for Epyc.

It's not just insane, but almost a false advertising. Intel can't launch that processor at that demoed speed, so all that was just smoke. Pretty, but useless smoke. The final product will only reach half that speed, and I don't know for how long before throttling back.

As for Threadripper vs Epyc, it's a problem AMD created by themselves. They could have gone with 6-core processors for the base of TR, giving us a fast and capable 12-core CPU that yes, Intel could have fought back "easily", but AMD would still have the price advantage anyway.

But in any case, Epyc is an enterprise class CPU, with extra security measures, so there shouldn't be any problem within those two products.

Nvidia releases a GPU firmware update tool to support 4K HDR monitors
https://www.pcgamer.com/nvidia-releases-a-gpu-firmware-update-tool-to-support-4k-hdr-monitors/
Now that 4K monitors with HDR support are starting to arrive, the question is, what do you need to run them? A beefy graphics card, for one, at least for gaming. However, you might also need to update the firmware on your GeForce graphics card, so Nvidia released a tool that will detect if that's the case, and apply the update as needed. Nvidia acknowledges in the tool's release notes that without the update, systems connected to a DisplayPort 1.3 or 1.4 monitor could experience blank screens on boot until the OS loads, or in some cases they might hang during boot.

The games industry reacts to Valve's divisive Steam Store curation policy
https://www.pcgamer.com/the-games-industry-reacts-to-valves-divisive-steam-store-curation-policy/
Steam's new 'anything goes' policy is doomed from the start, reckons Tyler. Valve's decision to no longer police games on Steam—except for those that are illegal, constitute "trolling," or fail to meet technical quality standards—is a contentious one, which the publisher spent 1,000 words attempting to explain yesterday.

Bulkhead Interactive held a Battalion 1944 tournament back at the beginning of April, with €5000 and a selection of unique skins going to the winners of UK-based esports organization Endpoint. But the skins were slow in coming (and apparently still haven't been delivered), leading one of the team members, SUSPC7, to complain about the situation on Discord—a complaint that included a threat to shoot up the studio, complete with a reference to the April shooting at YouTube.

Fans are demanding full Arcane Dust refunds following a recent update which quietly changed multiple legendaries, including the Rogue class card Tess Greymayne.
Update: Blizzard has reverted the changes to Tess Greymane. Community manager Jesse Hill confirmed this in a Battlenet forum post.

Time now for the GOG and Steam weekend deals:

  • Obviously, the Summer Sale takes all the spotlight at the moment. Don't forget to check it out because new games have been added to the sale!

And that's all folks. By the time there's a new edition of the news, E3 will already be in full force, with several conferences already done, and lots and lots of news waiting to be posted... I'm not sure if that's a good thing, at least for me XD. Meanwhile, enjoy and have a happy and gaming weekend.
