Isn't that still rather low for a CEO?

When compared to some US corporations yes. I read a while back that Japanese CEOs make about 20% of what US CEOs do. So in terms of his situation I would say its about right

Depends on the size of the company.
But CEOs of giant Japanese companies tend to have as much economic distance between their employees as CEOs of Western companies.

I do love a sweeping (and inaccurate) generalisation. If this is JUST salary and bonus (no stock awards) then I believe it is more than the CEO of MS and Apple. |
Let me know when the CEO of Southwest, Boeing, or American Airlines does this.
Also, it's my understanding that the difference between incomes of this year and last year are due to:
"Hirai gave up his bonus for the year ended in March as the main electronics operation remained unprofitable."
Are his stock awards going to be how much more?

That will be total remuneration including stock options and bonuses. Look at basic salaries. You need to compare him to his peers in his own sector. Compare his salary to that of the CEO's of tech companies. |
"Technology CEOs received most of their pay in equity, with 74 percent of their compensation packages received in either options or stock units. "
26% * 9.7 million = 2.52 million

Seems underpaid.
$1 million does not seem like much these days. taxes alone would half that. its just doesnt go as far as it used to.
Walking home with a big check when the profit Sony produced wasn't even remotely related to selling hardware seems odd to me. Life insurance and selling buildings don't justify that golden ticket. It is low by some standards, but still, it's not like Sony is in its glory days.
Hey, can't knock $1,600,000 in the bank!! Good luck to him in the future too.
153 million Yen sounds a lot better though!
