Because while Nintendo has stumbled at times, they have never come perilously close to annihilating their entire brand like MS did with the Xbox. MS finally had to listen; Nintendon't.

Region lock only pisses off a small percentage of the userbase. DRM that covers all games pisses off a majority. I'm sure there tons of people on this site that play more games than me and want region free but they are the 1%.
This whole MS changing their policies has given some gamers this feeling of self righteousness, and that they should determine the policies through which gaming companies operate.
Nintendo doesnt need to make things region free, they just need to introduce cross-region multiplayer.

Thought they already had cross region multiplayer. MK7 has it. I'm pretty sure Mario Kart Wii had it.

Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate, too.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
Nintendo doesn't want third partes to succeed on their consoles it would cut to much in their profit margin and it might force them to release new games not just old port of the same games
NA protests mean little to a board of directors in Japan.
You need mass Japanese Nintendo fans to make a fuss.
Nintendo give's the people an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind them, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join Nintendo in the sun.(lol, just saw the movie, thought this kind of fit)

This. Completely correct, Microsoft almost killed their gaming division and Nintendo doesn't need to change anything, unless they start caring a bit more.
-EDIT- Here you go.

It took Nintendo about 15 years, 2 failed systems (N64 and Gamecube), and near irrelivence in the industry to finally force them to change their tune and create the phenomenon that was the Wii. Don't expect them to bend easily, or soon. It will likely take them the entire generation of the failing Wii U, and maybe even another, for Nintendo to finally wake up an create a console that sells again. They posess the ability to do it, they just refuse to for some odd reason.
I love Nintendo, but they are perhaps the most stubborn company I've ever known. It is simply maddening.
