Hmm maybe it's not true. I was fed false information so :( Although the ending does pack more punch if he is lieing.
Oh wait found something about it being recordings at the college. Disregard everything I have said so far in this thread so. Need to do some more research before I post again.

If you find anything let me know please :)
First off AMAZING game, for sure one of my favorite games, all time. But im very torn with the ending. On one side its great and the other I hate it. I hate it because Joel lies to Ellie for in my opinion is a very selfish reason. Come on man she might be the key to stop the infection that might end up wiping out the human race. But Naughty dog did a very good job connecting you with them and I almost understand why he did it, I almost feel his pain and connection with this girl. I honestly don't know what I would have done if I was Joel...Without rambling to much I love the ending. Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson better win some awards. And how about Nolan North, what a great job with the voice work all around.
I think it was a great ending to the game, let me start by saying that. I think that Joel made the worse possible choice though. He chose Ellie becase she had become his new "daughter" and he chose her over saving humanity. I think he made a very sefish decision, and ellie would have been willing to die for this, as she became more determined than ever after the incident with David. That being said, I understand why he did what he did, even if it was a bad decision.
How did everyone do on collectables? I thought I searched everywhere only to find I got 104 of 141(?) I have no idea how I missed that many.
I thought the game was amazing, and I loved the ending. I personally think that Ellie knew Joel was lying to her. When Ellie asks Joel to swear to her, I don't think that she was trying to reaffirm the truth; I think she was trying to give Joel a chance to come clean.
The ending was bittersweet in that it was great that Joel and Ellie survived, but at the same time, you get the feeling that their relationship might be ruined. Joel seems like a broken man, attached to Ellie as the new reason for him to keep existing in the world, and perfectly fine not caring about the rest of humanity. Ellie, on the other hand, seems to want something more than just surviving, particularly because she doesn't want her past friends' and allies' deaths to be for nothing.
Some people didn't like how the credits rolled as soon as she says, "OK...," but I thought it was great, because it leaves it open to interpretation on what Ellie is going to do next.

I thought the Ellie being the cure thing was slightly cliched but was really moved by the lengths Joel went to to get a life with a his "second daughter" The only thing I didn't like about the game was that Ellie was a bit too powerful. When you played as her, I certainly didn't feel any more vulnerable which I thought was a shame. I will give it a bit of time before I go back and play it on survivor, I would advise most people play on hard, after the first few hours, the terror was gone because even if I was spotted, I could just run away and shoot everyone. |
I assumed when I started this thread it died cause not many had yet finished it, and obviously they dont want to come here till they have :P
I still cant escape the thought in my head that what Joel did at the end was an act of selfishness, I want to think he did the right thing but I cant ignore the things I knew. By the end he was dependent on her, and the story she told about how her and her friend got bit and infected, and her friend died, and then all that happened to get to where she was, by the end she was ready to die. I dont think she wanted to live in this world anymore having seen the harsh realities of it.
I think at the start Ellie was a very vulnerable character, by the time we were allowed to play as her she become quite capable of her own accord and had grown much more independent.
I already started it on Survivor, and though its hard so far I havent really gotten totally stuck (even though there have been times I expected too). I have just gotten to the part your navigating through the cemetary with Bill. The main changes, no 'concentrated hearing' (didnt realise how much I depended on that till it was gone!), and you get hardly any items at all, so you have to bit really sparing with what you do get (I havent even used a shiv yet other than to open locked doors!).
But it actually does make the game more enjoyable I find, as when I did it on normal like you said, I always had plenty of ammo, usually full items and materials to make more if I needed them. I think when I played on normal everytime I came to an encounter, I killed everything in the area. Though thats still possible on Survivor I guess, its a lot more about picking and choosing your fights. Sometimes its just better to avoid it and sneak past the enemies, as getting drawn into combat without resources can be a death sentence and like trying to break through a wall by headbutting it. Though I would recommend giving it a go, though difficult its not outlandish, and does help to create that feeling of 'struggle to survive'

I think what tears me so much about the ending I can sum up in two sentences...
'What Joel did was wrong and selfish'
'Joel did everything I wanted him too, and what I would have done if I was him'
In a case of thinking with your heart instead of your brain I guess, I didnt want Ellie to die to save humanity (and really after everything you seen it could be debated if it was worth saving?). I had grown emotionally attached to Ellie, and like Joel I wanted to protect her and make sure no harm came to her :)
(sorry for spamming with multiple replies) :)
