Forums - Sony - Publishers may be able to block used games on the PS4?

Under what forum rule should this thread be locked?

Sony has demonstrated a severe lack of clarity around this issue.  They have (very cleverly) focused entirely on what they will do for publishers on DRM (not much) and completely avoided mentioning what they will forbid publishers from doing (apparently, virtually nothing).

Which means that it is quite possible that the PS4 will be virtually as restrictive as the Xbox ONE, without the benefits of game sharing.

I hope that isnt the case, why would you want the drawbacks without the benefits, but some straight answers would be nice.

Tretton has already clarified that here:

"If you buy a used disc from GameStop, you’ll have no problem popping that disc in and playing it from your PlayStation 4. The issue may arise when you try to jump online and play with other players. At that point, a third-party publisher may impose a fee or not allow that."

There's another good link about another Sony exec clarifying, but I forgot his name and can't find it.

Yeah I had seen this one, fair enough.

I wonder why they wont just say that then...particularly in an email response...where its pretty clear what Kotaku are asking...

It's been answered several times. It's getting old.

I wonder why MS won't come out and clarify their half-assed clarifications.

A little off topic, but I will bite.

What have they failed to clarify?

I read that article and Sony confirms like 3 times they won't block used games, only the online part on used games is up to publishers.

Same as PS3. Kotaku just fishing for hits and it worked

no they fucking wont! for the love of god people sony went out on stage and said flat out that PS4 WONT BLOCK USED GAMES. its fucking done.

Sony wont have a defined system for publishers, no.

But they dont seem to be ruling out publishers ability to require an internet log in (even in the first instance) for their games, even single player experiences.

This isn't enough to rule it out? really?

In a vacuum, pretty close.

So again, why the mixed messages.

I think it will be months before we have complete clarity on this.  Geez the gaming media jumped the gun at E3.

its exactly like the PS3. do you see blocking of used games on the PS3? no, you just see online passes. case done

Sony has said like a billion times that you can play single-player games without authentication. It's multi-player, where the game has to connect to an outside network, that would allow a publisher control of the situation. I don't know how that could be any more clear.

Are any games blocked on PS3? Any with DRM beyond online passes? No? Well then that clears it up for me.

No one jumped the gun. Answers are clear. You are just hoping and wishful thinking.
