Forums - Sony - Curious case of Insomniac

Back in 2007, when i got my PS3 and uncharted wasn't released. The first game I borrowed from my friend was Resistance Fall of Man, till then I didnt know who Insomniac were, I mean I had an Xbox instead of a PS2, but instantly they became one of my fav dev, they were the developers for me and to look out for on PS3. They had the same amount of respect as I now have for ND till R2 came out. Granted R2 was ambitious, but got caught in call of duty craze, it looked promising at E3 reveal with 60 player and 8 player co-op online, but when it released the ambitions of Insomniac had ruined the core of Resistance and so was the image which it had built over the years with Resistance 1.

It was clear that Insomniac wanted to be the top developer with a top a IP among PS3 devs, but instead many catapulted over them after the release of R2, and seeing how sony emphazised on Killzone as the defining FPS for PS3, I guess it hurted insomniac and so I guess they had a point to prove with R3 and they did to some extent. that game rekindled my interest in resistance universe and had one of the best atmosphere in a game!

As things stand now at SONY, everybody can see, even if Insomniac do release an exclusive for PS4, as a dev they will still be behind the likes of ND, GG, SMS, MM, QD and SP and the game will be not much of a success,  judging by what a great game R3 was and how poorly it did in sales compared to its previous iterations . So Microsoft was the place they went, i guess with a little bit of help from Phil Harrison, and i think there they might have a chance to be one of the top developers as Bungie is out and Epic no where to be seen, RARE are making Kinect games and rest are unproven new studios.

So my point is, I'm not mad at insomniac for switching to MS after a decade of partnership with PS, It was not a backstab or a betrayal, they deserved better and I hope MS is the place. I just want to say THANKS to Insomniac for standing by and supporting PS3 all these years, while it was being bashed all around for being Hard to develop, expensive and with poor sales. They are the only developer on PS3 to have maximum number of games or exclusives on PS3 by any dev. R1, R&C:TD, R2, R&C:QB, R3, R&C:ACiT,  R&C: A41, R&C:FFA.

R1, R&C:TD, R2, R&C:QB, R3, R&C:ACiT, R&C: A41, R&C:FFA.
Really?

For all people NOT familiar with the PS3:

Resistance 1
Ratchet&Clank: Tools of Destruction
Resistance 2
Ratchet&Clank: Quest for Booty
Resistance 3
Ratchet&Clank: A Crack in Time
Ratchet&Clank: All4One
Ratchet&Clank: Full Frontal Assault

I was thinking about this when I saw Ted Price on the stage of the MS conference.....what has happened to Insomniac? They were the headline E3 act 3-4 years ago, when they showcased the Chicago setpiece from R2....and it seems it's went downhill from there. Although I haven't played Fuse, it just seems that they had decided to go multiplatform to try and recoup costs...but don't know what happened with Fuse, but doubt they will recoup their outlay....and now they are in bed with MS....are they so desperate for cash that they had to get a big payday to make an exclusive for the XBox One?

I agree with the OP, they were probably my favourite developer in the PS3's early years, but they have seriously went downhill....initially down to shorter development cycles etc....but maybe they just don't feel the love from Sony anymore?

And it's sad to say, but I don't think they will be missed from the Sony scene anyway. Virtually every 1st/2nd party developer has overtaken them technically....sad day really.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

Were they really ever a big company? At its peak, Ratchet sold a few million and Resistance only sold well because of bundling, look at 2 and 3 to see the real sales of that game. You have to ask yourselves, would they rather be in this position, or Sucker Punch's? Who have basically taken their place (and now been bought by Sony) and SecondSon is one of the headline PS4 exclusives.

Sunset Overdrive was at the M$ press conference, but I don't think it wowed anyone. It is probably good to have and it could well actually be exclusive (not timed) but they have definitely lost their way in recent years. I think they had some sort of contract with Sony over Ratchet which they filled by putting out very average games, maybe because they were working on FUSE.... Admittedly, their really good Ratchet games didn't even sell, but I would rather they at least tried

I never played any of their games in the PS2 era, but I loved the early Ratchets this gen and so it does seem like a loss, but apart from Resistance 3, the second half of this gen has been a bit rubbish. I would not be surprised to see them fold in the next few years

Perhaps Killzone 2 should have come out November 2008 and Resistance 2 in February 2009.

I was looking at the Sony games in development for PS4 and something felt missing. What's missing is Insomniac who brought us a game every year for PS3.

one of my fav developers :(
Sunset overdrive looked sweet. I hope the xbox audience will support the game

For some reason, I don't think they were talented enough. I just wish they didn't move to shooters and stayed making action-adventure games that wasn't always Ratchet and Clank.

especially for me Ready at dawn has taken their place! and "The Order: 1886" will be the game on PS4's that replaces Resistance.
