Nintendos bread and butter is its handhelds, but they can also be extremely profitable on the home console front too. They have proven with N64 and Gamecube that they can turn a decent profit with a smaller userbase, and sell a shit ton of games too. Occasionally you get a Wii, NES or SNES which exceed expectations, why would Nintendo give up on that.
