I just renewed my PS+ 3 days ago. Great value. I only pay one game none (Uncharted 3) but the free games are an added value. Does suck for others though. But I think once new subscribers see all the "free" stuff and discounts they'll probably like it. That's actually how I came around to subscribing.

I don't see the problem here, been a PS+ subscriber for a while and that $5 a month is nothing compared to all the stuff you get. I'm more amazed people don't want to pay for plus to get all the awesome stuff. Just this month you get Deus ex, Saints for 3, Uncharted 3, xcom, virtues last reward, machinarum and I think godeaters burst.

So long, free multiplayer.

Who's "Jumping Out" of the PS4 now that you have to pay $50-60 a year to play your games online?

Given all the free content offered with PS+ I don't see a problem at all. PS+ free games, access to Gaikai, heavily discounted game purchases I can live with paying for multiplayer in that case...that $50 dollars a year is steal.

On the one hand I've been a Plus member for almost 2 years and it has paid for itself in free games and discounts several times over, so the fact that PS4 multiplayer will now require Plus really doesn't affect me.

On the other hand I don't see the rationale for Sony doing this - clearly the negative PR can't be worth it, and why just tie multiplayer to Plus when other stuff like PSN store access, media (i.e. Netflix I presume) remain free to use?  Sony should have used the 'pull' method instead of 'push':  add some must-have *new* feature to Plus that would entice nearly everyone to join it rather that artificially tie a core function (mulitplayer) to it to push people into grudgingly signing up for Plus.

A glaring mis-step in an otherwise solid pro-gamer set of corporate policies (no restrictions on used game sales or lending, $399 price point, etc)

You don't see the rationale? What's not to get? It's $399 + a yearly tax because the yearly tax is what keeps it at $399 'cept you want sony to go out of business and voila, you get stuck with M$ DRM or keep playing mario and zelda in various iterations.

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

I was expecting this to happen one day or an other, even though I was hoping it wouldn't... MS showed that it can be a successful model. The good news though is that subscribers still get the same benefits from PS+ as on the PS3. Instant Games Library, Beta access, discounts...

Was good value before they included online gaming to the mix. It's just a shame that they followed MS's greedy practice... I'm still against the principle. But I already pay for PS+, so that's not a big deal. Still.. I dislike the idea.

What differentiates the online infrastructures of consoles to warrant a paywall for online gaming, when compared to the PC's free one?

Really??? Suddenly Sony fans are all on board for paying to play online?

Why would you jump out to the competitor that does the same thing?

As usual, you forget the third option, Wii U, which doesn't charge for online, no DRM, and backwards compatability. Get sales and 3rd party support to pick back up, coupled with Nintendo Franchises and a slew of upcoming indie games (many of which the Wii U is the only home console they're coming to), and I'm fuckin' set. Don't need either "other" console.

Been a little bias today, but I am fair so I'll throw this out there:

Its funny how people used to the whole free online as a weapon and the main reason why they bought a ps3 now that its gone it doesn't matter.  Hypocrites lol

I can still play online multi-player free on my PS3, while with the xbox360 multi-player still cost's you money, so no they are still not the same thing.

Okay ill make myself more clear. Its funny how ps fanboys are eating this up when just 24 hours ago they were against paying to play online.

and its ALSO funny how the same people throwing this up in the face of those OTHER GAMER'S FACES, are the very same people that stated that Sony has to have RESTRICTIVE DRM REQUIRED JUST LIKE MICROSOFT's ! ,THAT THERE WOULD BE NO WAY FOR SONY TO OFFER THE PS4 WITHOUT A RESTRICTIVE DRM  LIKE MICROASOFTS, ON THE PS4.

ps:

Proud psOne/2/3/p owner.  I survived Aplcalyps3 and all I got was this lousy Signature.

Hmmm....

The hypocrisy is great in this one....
