Not really that surprising to be honest. The 3DS has been out for around 2 years (I think...). No gaming system will stay on the market forever.

That and the DSi XL is probably not selling very well compared to other DS versions and of course, the 3DS and 3DS XL.

The DSi XL is only $100 less here in Australia too, it was competing against the 3DS and 3DS XL, not good for Ninty in the long term. I assume the prices are somewhat similar in other countries?

Here in the states its DSi/XL-$99/129 vs 3DS/XL-$169/199. I can imagine alot of people getting a handheld for there kids getting the DS and I dont think Nintendo wants that.

Nintendo should just go and release them as DSiQue and keep selling them in China and expand to other countries India Africa whatever.

I wish that they would, but it is for greedy reasons that I wish this. I want the DS to beat the PS2. But Nintendo seems to not care.

I don't think its a greedy reason  some people just have to know their place and you just want a specific group of people to know their place so its okay. its actually honorable LOL

Dont worry the DS already won  because at least 50% of the PS2 phats died because of DISK READ ERRORS. And the slim was released when the Phat was at around 100 million consoles sold. Plus there is at lest 5 million people who bought the console for watching DVDs. And not to forget all the phone contracts that had a "free" PS2 etc....

Whereas the DS had more people buy the system because they wanted to compared to the  "I have to buy another systems otherwhise I have 40 games I cant play  DAMMIT "$'#!"=!!!!!!"

My phat died  my sisters phat died my best friends phat died etc   I know like 35 people who own a PS2 and all their phats died. So for me its 100% of all the phats I ever saw in my entire life. I also was an exchange student and went to Ireland twice and both families had to replace their phats with slim consoles.

And I dont know a single person who had a Slim break  so it shows how shitty the original console was.

So in theory Nintendo won  but if you just go by numbers that show nothing else than well just numbers that dont mean anything and totally ignore all the aspects that really define a "winner" then the PS2 seems to win.

But Nintendo doesn't care about winning then compared to Sony, Nintendo as a company is more about honor etc. They don't care if the system wins against the PS2.

I mean they could manufacture 3 million DS consoles (for what? 30 dollars? per unit) and buy all themselves or give them away to every single WiiU owner as a THANK YOU! and they would have won in every scenario. And if people would say  that doesn't count then being forced to replace a broken PS2 also doesn't count!

It won't be surprising if, yes, they drop the price this year, near the holiday, and they discontinue it sometime in the summer/early holiday next year. The DS is performing, but not nearly as well as it was, of course, and might become an annoying thing that just keeps coming back for Nintendo to take care of soon.

I could see them doing the same thing with Wii, that way 3DS and Wii U get full attention.

Exactly. NA and Europe (unlike Japan) seem to hang onto the last generation for far too long, so Nintendo has to give them a little kick into the "next gen."
