Forums - Nintendo - @Old Paper Mario Fans: Is Mario and Luigi the New Paper Mario?

Which do you prefer?

Mario and Luigi 20 71.43%

Paper Mario (new games) 8 28.57%

Total:28

I just saw some footage of M&L: Dream Team. I've never really played a M&L game so the only thing I could really compare it to was Paper Mario.

I also recommend the GameXplain vids: vid1, vid2

Paper Mario games haven't been the same since TTYD, but M&L: Deam Team reminds me of how it used to be, especially now that it's in a 3D world, the similarity is more visible. So my question is to old Paper Mario fans, do you prefer M&L games now?

I think I do. I really liked what I saw in the vids; all the quirky little things, the funny special attacks, the cool gameplay ideas (like the lower screen sneeze, mustache), real world effecting dream world...etc. I'm really looking forward to this game now :)

No.

M&L games have always been a league on its own, just like Paper Mario used to be. They're both RPG, but they're both handled differently. In fact, they both share lots of similarities but, if played, you could realize how different they truly are.

But anyway, you should play Superstar Saga. Or Partners in Time. Or Bowser's Inside Story. Something we can all agree about M&L games is that they've maintained their quality without forgetting what made them great; which is saddly what happened to the Paper Mario saga.

It's still Mario & Luigi.

Heh. First time we agree on something.

Yeah, I saw some pretty big differences (no partners for example).

It's just the series looks really good, and they're both RPGs. It might replace the Paper Mario series for me personally from now on.

I would still take TTYD over any M&L game, but I would take any M&L game over PM's latest two installments.

For me, they've been the Mario RPG experience in a handled. Paper Mario used to be the RPG experience on consoles. Now, I'm afraid, Mario and Luigi are the only Mario RPG experience available.

And...I love the focus on Luigi they've been doing. I love Luigi =P

I thought that earlier today we agreed that the NeoGAF rule is horrible?

ALL NEOGAF RULES ARE AWESOME.

There you have it, oficial statement, erases everything previously. Now, first time we agree on something!

@bolded: yeah... :/

and yeah, I love Luigi too :D My fav character in MKWii

Having yet to play a Mario & Luigi RPG title, I'm probably not qualified to speak here, but I have always heard good things about the series. For me, I LOVED Paper Mario and Paper Mario: TTYD...two of my favorite games ever. Since then though...meh. Super Paper Mario wasn't even REALLY a Paper Mario game....it was like Nintendo had a unique gameplay hook/idea and then pasted Paper Mario into it. I had REALLY high hopes for Sticker Star based on the early development screenshots, but then Miyamoto stepped in and messed things up. Don't get me wrong, the guy's a genius with his own games...but just because someone else is using his characters, doesn't mean he should ALWAYS be able to upend the tea-table. It was stated in an interview at some point that Paper Mario 3DS was SUPPOSED to be like the first two...an RPG with partners and all. But Miyamoto requested that no characters differ from how they would REALLY be in the Mushroom Kingdom (ie. can't have a goomba or a koopa as a partner, since they're natural "baddies.") and so the entire game was switched around. Very disappointed with how it turned out...still looked great and full of charm...but the gameplay itself and the RPG feel was shattered. Dream Team looks great and I'm excited to try a Mario & Luigi game for the first time. Hopefully it'll live up to the hype and hopefully Intelligent Systems goes back to Paper Mario basics for a Wii U game.
