Are we comparing Retro Studios to Naughty Dog? Really?
Yes, Metroid Prime and DKCR were great but Naughty Dog gave us Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter and Uncharted while Retro has yet to release an IP of their own.

Metroid Prime 3 and DKCR didn't push the hardware, and metascores of 87 and 90 are not stellar. Let's face it, they're known for ONE game - Metroid Prime - which was both stellar and pushed the hardware. Most key staff had left after Prime or Prime 2. They're living on a memory. |
Metroid Prime 3 was the best of the triology, Prime 2 the worst. Uncharted 2 was the best and Uncharted 3 the worst of this triology. Some Naughty Dog devs even go to Retro in the last two years.
No love for Prime 2 :( ?
It really is underrated and comparable to Majoras Mask in that regard (pretty difficult, very dark, has a few pacing issues but is brilliant overall !)

Metroid Prime revolutionized the series and DKCR revived a franchise and became one of the greatest platformers of all time. It is fair.
Also, I think ND has far more freedom than Retro. Sony is usually at the mercy of ND (example; No PSMove in Uncharted 3), while Nintendo probably controls what Retro can or can't do.
"I think Metroid Prime was great for its time and even though MP3 was an improvement over it MP3 came a lot later so not as impressive."
Sequels can't be impressive. Good to know. Sorry Uncharted 2.
" DKCR was a good game but it was just copying what Rare had done in the 90s for the most part."
So you mean... they did exactly what they were supposed to do? The whole purpose of DKCR was to modernize the DKC formula without losing the nostalgia, and they did an amazing job. Contrary to what people might think, updating an older franchise and making it relevant for a new audience while not alienating the old is a really difficult task. Sega couldn't even do that in their own franchise with Sonic 4, and I'd argue that Retro's DKCR is closer to the old DKC games than NSMB is to the old Mario games. Regardless of whether or not you think DKCR should have been so similar to DKC, that's what Retro was told to do and they did it to perfection. Oh, and they made the best level designs 2D platformers have seen in well over a decade.
"What else have Retro done? Metroid Prime Hunters, the MP Trilogy port and Mario Kart 7. Let us not pretend these blew anyone away, Hunters should never have been greenlit for DS, Trilogy was a port and MK7 was just MK as usual."
Let us also not pretend these were Retro games. Retro was too busy to do Hunters which was handled by Nintendo Software Technology. Retro had some input, but there role was pretty limited. Retro is actually completely uncredited for Hunters. In MK 7 they had a hand in designing some of the Retro courses. Again, pretty limited. Criticizing Retro for these games (both of which are actually pretty good) is like holding PSASBR against SCE Santa Monica.
The company has released 4 games with a metaaverage of 91.625 overall (91.7 if you want to count Trilogy). This includes the 10th best rated game of all time. Somehow, this isn't enough to impress people.

It took me six years and three copies of Metroid Prime 2 to complete that game. Metroid Prime 1 was fun and had a good flow to it. Metroid Prime 2 just completely lacked the fun factor. Everything in that game was tedious. It is one of the few games I really hated to play >:{

Sad to hear that :( It relly is the red headed stepchild of the bunch, but I love it (the darkworld was shamelessly stolen/inspired by a Link to the Past though :D)

No it isn't. I love redheads. It is the sadistic emo nephew nobody likes ;O
Both Studios are overrated in my opinion. The last really good game Naught Dog made was Jak and Daxter, Uncharted is boring crap and the last of us has to show if it is the same boring crap as Uncharted or if it is as good as the old Naughty Dog Games.
And Retro, the Metroid Prime Games was all quite boring crap, Donkey Kong Country returns was better but not really awesome the Game was fun but nothing I will still remeber in 10 years or so.
There are at least 30 way way better gaming developer Studios out there than Retro or Naughty Dog.
