While both are great developers, Retro hasn't really shown their full potential IMO. It's been over a decade since Prime came out, and while that was a landmark title that deserves all the praise it got and more (especially considering its troubled development history), since then all they've done is copy the MP formula twice, and put out a 2D platformer once again based off an existing Nintendo IP.

I need to see something original from Retro before I start putting them on the level of other top-tier developers, because right now they seem to be a one-trick pony. They're no Rare, that's for sure. Rare not only made stellar games based off existing Nintendo IPs like DK... they had a HUGE library of top-quality games and original IPs spanning all sorts of genres like platforming, racing, fighting, shooters, and so much more.

Well said. Nintendo has to let the bird of the cage. Retro needs more freedom!

Retro does need more freedom, but I'd say they've proven themselves capable of making games as good as Rare's best.

Dont think its fair to compare the two, hell i dont think its fair to compare them to Rare in their heyday. Seems Rare might have had a bit more free rein than Retro ever did. Dont care for the Prime series. I always found those games boring TBH, like slow FPSs. Love DKCR, just got it for 3ds (hated the Wii version). ND is ND, Crash, Jax, Uncharted. Its all good.

What has Retro done lately and what are they doing next?

That is the big question, the last thing they did was making the Retro tracks (see what I did there ?) for Mario Kart 7, I hope they will unveil their game in Nintendo´s E3 direct !

I am going crazy wanting to see what they are making for Wii U. If they don't reveal it at E3 I might very well storm their headquarters...

Retro is great but they are nothing compared to what Rare meant to Nintendo in its hey-day. Naughty Dog has been pumping out hits for Sony since the mid-late 90's.

Retro has the potential to be the next Rare but there output hasnt been fast enought.

Between 1994-2002 I think Rare released at least one game a year, Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Blast Corps, GoldenEye, Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Tooie, Jet Force Gemini, Conkers Bad Fur Day and Star Fox Adventures.

On the other hand Retro has made 4 games in just over 10 years. Metroid Prime trilogy and Donkey Kong Country Returns.

I think Retro needs to get a 2nd team started and release a game every other year just like Naughty Dog.

All im going to say is that everything Retro touches turns to gold. Naughty Dog not so much.

Judging by how most of you post, and your track records I wouldn't doubt if you guys have ever played the Uncharted series and simply posted to support your favorite IP, which is ridiculous when you consider this isn't even a comparison thread. Also, I find it very hard to believe someone was able to beat the first Uncharted, but couldn't finish 2 because it was less interesting? I'm sorry but I find that very hard to believe, 2 was simply the better game in every way.

Also the Metacritic for Metroid Prime 1: 97, Metroid Prime 2: 91, Metroid Prime 3: 90. Average = 92.6. Sales: Less than 9M.

Uncharted 1:89, Uncharted 2:96, Uncharted 3: 92. Average:  92.3. Sales: More than 15M.

They're both critically acclaimed studios. The fact you guys are arguing which one is better is silly to me when most of you are bias towards the IP on your prefferred console. No matter how good Metroid or Uncharted is you guys will simply downplay it if it's not on your console, I simply can't believe anyone could call these two studios overrated. It's annoying that EVERY thread here ends up in a console wars bias debate.

Metrois Prime is my favorite game of all time and Uncharted series is what finally made me buy a PS3 last year so at least theres one person here not biased

I'm a huge fan of Metroid: Prime. In fact, it's one of my top3 games of all time. I love it.

But, (and this is significant)

Retro has ZERO experience in HD games. Same for the rest of Nintendo. This is where I feel they've dropped the ball somewhat with the lack of power in the Wii and the late release of the Wii U. They have to get over the learning curve pretty fast.

While I have a ton of respect for Retro (mostly for their 2002 epic), they haven't had the same output as ND. The onus is very much on them to show they are in the same category.

I hope they succeed.
