Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One team discusses “holistic” design approach

VG247

Microsoft has released a blog post discussing how Xbox One was designed with a “holistic” approach.

According to the post and its accompanying video, the console was designed to look good and be a functional all-in-one living room product. The firm also chose the “blackest black” possible for the color so it would blend well into the room yet allow the colorful buttons on the controller to stand out more.

“We wanted to think from a holistic perspective,” said creative director, design Ramiro Torres. “When designing anything on Xbox, you have to consider everything from the way the hardware and user interface looks, to the way the box and branding is expressed. Everything has a role in the way you experience a brand.”

“Many people may not notice some of the small design touches,” said designer Carl Ledbetter, an 18-year veteran of Microsoft who led industrial design on Xbox 360 S and Kinect.

“But we take pride in our craftsmanship in making sure everything is perfect. We want to create something that is exciting and will please our customers, both old and new. Nailing every last detail is critical.

“Having the design and engineering teams working closely together was paramount to the design process. It makes it faster and more efficient, and allowed us to rapidly prototype new samples for testing. Constant iteration was instrumental.”

It's the same size as 360S in terms of length but way more beautiful. I shall call it "Mulata"

I really like the controller, but the console itself is just a big box. Still prefer the Xbox 360 Slim.

I do like it that it would blend in with my TV and shelf, rather then stick out like something that doesn't belong.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

It looks bigger than it is actualy... but seeing the video, they didn't know what to say, hyping the color? Haha!

But the more I see the console, the more I like it and I appreciate that it doesn't look like a toy anymore.

I kinda agree with this.

I think it was a bold move by MS to make it a square rectangle and look like a home surround receiver or VCR, but I think it could turn out to be a successful decision because this classic design will never go out of fashion, at least it hasn't yet in at least three decades.

But can it fit with a ps4 that will prob be as big? We will need new bigger living rooms just for the boxes. i wonder how hot its going to get.

I prefer my consoles to stick out. That's what I liked about the Wii and original 360. You could instantly tell what they were.

Dat controller though. I wish the Dualshock 4 and Xbone control made a baby, then it would be perfect.
