of`course gaming devision do not account sales of blu-ray movies,
BUT i can assure you, THAT thnx to PS3(GAMING DEVISION) Sony DID MORE profit from blu-ray movies.

Oh my god.  Crazzyman actually made a good point... a completly obvious good point... but a good point none the less.

Of course it's also likely that all those free blu-ray movies were counted as entertainment losses and not game losses, also the sony promotions where you take out a sony credit card and get 100 off a PS3(or sony HD TV or other sony product) would likely be considered losses on the financial side and not the gaming side. (Perhaps part of the reason the financial side was suddenly in the red?)

You believe, sony sell HD TV at loss? LOL. =)

They give 5 movies away, and they don`t need to pay 120 mln. $ to WB, like Toshiba did for paramount. =))

Its a pity this is no where near making up for the losses incurred since the PS3's release. Sony has been set back nearly a decade in profits, now is the slow game of catch up.

If the PS3 can't turn a profit for third party developers though, it still doesn't stand a terribly good chance of winning any more ground this generation. Right now Sony is treading water, not moving forward. And if all of you celebraters were so sure this would happen, where exactly were all of you the last six months? ;)

Wow, for someone that knows absolutely nothing about financials how much profit and revenue Sony generated since creating the Playstation brand, you sure do talk alot. Why don't you go back to signing the "RE5 wii" petition everyday in hopes of a dumbed down rail shooter version instead of trolling.

@CrazzyMan : I doubt anyone thinks Sony sells HDTVs for a loss, that is, anyone that knows jack about the industry.

Sony is up 2.1billion in the game division since the fiscal year ending march 31/98. This is what i got when looking at the numbers on Sony's reports. I'm not sure what their game division did before but i'm sure they are in the positive.

No, the point is.  That while Blu-ray sales go into entertainment, the amount of money lost per HD-TV sale to do giving away a PS3 with it goes to entertainment, as does the many other deals to make the PS3 sell.  So it's silly to point at the part that it helps the other divisions yet ignore the many other ways the divisions have helped it. (Free movies, discounts, giving away free at some times.)

Most big companies can 'shuffle' numbers depending on where they allocate costs, promotions, etc. Sony and MS are the same. Its impossible to trully pin down the details as even publically traded companies don't have to be that open with their accounts. PS3 promotions might be hidden under 'Entertainment' budgets or not. Zune and other MS entertainment activity might or might not be used to massage 360 numbers.

All it really tells you is that both Sony and MS have many other revenue streams besides consoles and both can rely on them to assist their console divisions if they so chose.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

That's what i'm saying.  That's why it's silly to point to increases in other segments that may or may not be due to the game division because it's likely the game division has also received such boosts.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

A very promising result by Sony, for the next quarter hopefully the PS2 continues to sell well and they are able to further cost reduce the PS3.

Overall 2008 looks like it's going to be an excellent year for Sony.
