I still wonder why Zelda never had its big breakthrough in Japan just like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Maybe Japanese people see it as a JRPG impersonator. Zelda is more an action/adventure of course, but still, it has all the potential to become big and yet it doesn't, despite all the acclaim the series has gotten throughout the years. Even Skyward, a more Asian inspired Zelda game, could not appeal very much to that market.

So what do people think that Shin Gundam Musou will open with on PS3 and PS Vita.

It seems to be tracking a lot less than Gundam Musou 3 which opened at around 185k on PS3.

Personally I'm not sure, it'd be nice if you could give us the numbers from the previous Gundam Musous (sorry for being lazy)

I do know however that according to GAF, bamco are hoping for LTD sales of 350k for the PS3 version and 150k for the Vita one. These don't sound too high in my opinion, the other 3 hit the same sort of level and although franchise fatigue may hurt, sometimes these games have very committed fanbases who will just keep on buying.

That said this year we've had Gundam Breaker not all that long ago and a new version of Vs. launching soon, plus there might be a lot of musou fatigue - this year alone we've had One Piece Musou 2, DW8, WO3U, SW2HD and DW8XL - Gundam will make it 6 this year alone (11 if you count the PS3 and PSV SKU's seperately)

Therefore I expect this new one to fall a little short of past entries. As for the Vita version, I'm cautiously optimistic it'll hit its target. Kidou Senshi Gundam Seed: Battle Destiny hit about 120k LTD, Gundam Breaker PSV did much less but was obviously a late port so it was to be expected. I don't know, the musou games are usually some of the best selling Gundam games so maybe it'll do better than Kidou Senshi, in which case 150k seems reasonable

Make me wonder if they did a JRPG turn based spin off game how it would fair there.

Well here is some figures.

Gundam Musou

  • 335,00 on PS3, (170k OP)
  • 20,000 on 360
  • 305,000 on PS2
Gundam Musou 2
  • 355,00 on PS3, (160k OP)
  • 65,000 on 360  (28k OP)
  • 250,000 on PS2
Gundam Musou 3
  • 385,00 on PS3, (185k OP)
  • 25,000 on 360  (12k OP)
Figures are from Famitsu/VG Chartz combined.  Inc re-releases, best edition etc...

I don't see the Vita target being hit at all. In fact i'll be surprised if it even hits 100k. The PS3 targer seems more reasonable but i think it'll just hit 300k including digital sales. After all it seems advertising for this game is non existant in Japan and a Gundam game has just released last month + one next month as well. Also Musou games have been over saturated this year but that's not too much of an issue due to the fact that'll affect musou games more and not Gundam games.
But still, I think Shin Gundam Musou will not do as good as the previous games even with PS3/PSVita dual release. LT sales around 350k-400k across both PS3 and PS Vita.

Thanks, I went to look for the COMG numbers for you but I only had access to the old thread and the updates were not very consistant. I can tell you that with 8 days left, Gundam Musou 3 had 236pts and was moving quickly (it added 27pts that day). Unfortunately the thread doesn't say how many it had when it released and it isn't old enough for either of the first two games.

By comparison, Shin Gundam Musou with 8 days left had 95pts for PS3 and 17pt for Vita for a total of 112pts

Also I think I might be beginning to agree with you on the Vita target - I'd assumed that Kidou Senshi was PS3/V multiplat when it was in fact Vita exclusive, so it should always have done well without a 2nd SKU to steal its sales. With this, I agree that 150k is optimistic. I still think 100k is on the cards though LTD. Thanks for your figures, I hope this helps

Yakuza PS3>PS4, Japan console flop confirmed.
