Really great news. Great business at work regardless of some of the hate they get. Then again when you are popular you generate just as much hate as you do love whether for good reason or not. Just look at CoD.

Did Microsoft sell off Redmond One to achieve this? Or was it because of a change in the valuation of the dollar?
The entire market is way up, the Dow is at all-time highs and Nasdaq is doing well also, so this isn't exactly shocking. I would venture a guess that most of the big American staple stocks are up (McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Disney, Wal-Mart, etc.).
EDIT: I checked ... yup, all of McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Disney, Wal-Mart are at 5 year highs, some of them are at 10-year highs or even all-time highs.
Monster corporations: What recession?
hmm, its great to see the stock rising, but it doesn't make sense since pc sales are falling. Even Dell announced a 79% fall in profits.
PC's are... I won't say irrelevant to Microsoft, because they are not.
But Microsoft now has a much much larger play field then when they were Windows only.
Now they are an OS provider on PC, Tablet and Phone, They have Azure, Bing Maps, Bing Search, Xbox, Xbox LIVE, Office 365, Surface, Windows Phone, Windows Store, SharePoint, SQL Server, Visual Studio, Outlook, Skype...
I could go on for a while, but I think I got the point accross of the scope Microsoft does business on.
