Forums - General Discussion - A Major Issue that Needs to be Addressed by Moderators

Galaki's joke was brilliant. He took a rare chance on a play on words. Stuff like that shouldn't be stopped at all.

I think it's more like this is just the final straw kind of thing that caused you to make this thread. There shouldn't be any preferential treatment for women, because that would mean that we think that women are weak.

Posts that get moderated need to stay up, unless it is stuff that absolutely needs to be deleted (pornography, hate speech of epic proportions etc.). Moderation needs to be transparent, so that users get educated of what is allowed and what is not by simply reading the forums.

People act sympathetic, because you are a woman. It seems like the right thing to do. Doesn't mean they actually care, but saying that they do is what they feel is expected from them. That goes for many things in life, hence why there's a lot of talk without any actions following.

his joke would've been funny had it been directed at someone he was familiar enough with to make it (brilliant is stretching it, by a lot). learning how to address different individuals is a sign of maturity.

This behavior goes across religion, race (well.. video game race i.e. console preference) as well as gender. From what I've seen people tend to just brush it off unless it gets really out of hand. If you believe it is, then creating a thread like this is a good start for positive construction, or just leaving the website (which would be unfortunate).

It's a byproduct of the demographics that make up the core community. Just as with any forum or any society.

Thanks... that's basically my perspective. Let's make something positive happen of this, not fan it away.

I do appreciate some of the criticism vice versa. A thick skin is very nice to have on any forum and I made a thread about this at one point and edit: / how to treat forum psychology/ (you can check my profile if you care)... however, I've been to plenty of forums over 15-20 years... I do not understand the moderation structure here.

To me, leaving comments up after "moderating" them (which is not moderation imo) is equal to creating a arena for trolls... in fact, I would not be surprised if Ben (no offense personally) and others here just making comments to entertain themselves rather than actually think with your POV. It's to be expected on the internet, but if you have a forum with moderates to manage "discussion", then we maybe need to consider what is being encouraged in that manner.

Just keep reporting these people. Sometimes mods don't ban someone right away if they don't have a ban history. Eventually, mods will notice these people.

I'm not sure he meant anything by that, but banning Galaki is something I can always get behind.

And badgenome is someone I can always get behind

Lol. Damn, you were quick.

I could care less what that just picture said, only that that is the first time I was ever addressed in a meme lol

Well, it was fitting the topic :D

Just replace badgenome with yourself and you see the implications ^^

Thanks for the mention :)

Eh, it wasn't that bad. He shouldn't have said it, but there doesn't need to be an uproar about it. It wasn't like he used an off topic joke to offend her, it was a play on words. While it was a bit insensitive, I probably see more offensive posts on a daily basis.

isnt that the problem? the joke is just an example of a bigger issue

I don't want people banned, that accomplishes nothing. I just want the behavior acted on and for people to be encouraged to edit/avoid those posts. I would want the same consideration for anyone, not just the girls... the standard here just needs to be raised, that's all.

BTW, check my join date, I've been reporting pretty much since then! lol

So if a woman made a joke about one of you guys having a boner you would become upset and want her banned?

I mean come on people. That is just rediculous

I dont find racist jokes offensive, it doesnt mean they arent offensive to others. Just because I dont care if people insult my race... If someone called me white trash, I wouldnt care. If I called someone a little chink, they would care.

People have thicker skin than others. Different things offend different people. Thats just the way it is.

Except for the fact he never insulted women

She made a thread about a PM problem and he made a joke about PMS.  A play on words.  I mean my god if were banning people based on something as simple as that now the entire forum will be perma banned within 2 weeks.  This nothing more than someone being oversensitive about litteraly nothing.  There was zero attack on women in his comment

he made a joke to someone he didnt have the relationship to make that kind of joke with. the same joke will be received differently depending on how close the person who made it is to you.

i can handle that kind of joke from a close friend but i never gave someone like you the liberty to make any jokes regarding my religion (not even my close friends would do something so stupid and childish) or my gender. if someone took the liberty have no doubt i'd report them, this isnt 4 chan or a troll farm, there are rules.

I dont care if you gave me the liberty to make jokes.  Your in an open forum.

I respect the hell out of women and am a serious poster and virtually never post anything joke related.  But this is nothing more than an absolutly trivial joke that quite frankly if it offended someone so what? the joke neither attacked or targeted anyone.

Alright, I'm going to be direct here.

Galaki's post was not offensive. Galaki's post did not break the rules. Galaki's post was a pun based on your thread title. If you do see anything that offens you, by all means report it. If it's moderatable, it will be moderated. If it isn't, then it won't, and you need to accept that although it was offensive to you, we didn't consider it to be objectively offensive.

I'm going to try to put this as nicely as possible, so I apologise if it still seems a little bit harsh. But we are not here to deal with people being offended. That's far too subjective. We are here to maintain a certain level of discourse and keep this site from becoming a giant flamewar. No part of that requires the banning of jokes that certain people find offensive.

Women are more than welcome here. You, personally, are more than welcome here. But that doesn't mean that we are going to bend over backwards to do everything that every user wants us to do. That is not feasible.

this should sum up the whole thread. great responce!

It is not only our Blue Slime Rocket and it is not only PMS jokes. Certain users on this site (mostly senior members) seem to be able to get away with anything, all you will hear is along the lines of "Hurr durr, he's always been like this. That's just who he is. Deal with it."

Fuck this, I don't care if he got away with violating the forum rules for years. I do my best to follow the forum rules and keep up a normal discussion, so if someone purposely breaks them he should be punished accordingly. I understand that the mods have LOADS of works to do and can't possibly keep controlling all threads. But reporting certain people doesn't seem to have any impact at all.

Btw. I wholeheartedly (is this even a word? :D) agree with all of your points, Marucha^^

Name names. Dont be shy.

And thus break the forum rules myself? Nope, not gonna happen.

You won't be breaking any rules by saying which users seem to be able to get away with anything. You won't be calling them trolls or fanboys, just the occasional rulebreakers

If something happens (aka 1-day ban) I'll blame you XD. One user for sure would would be Rol. Some of his threads are clearly sarcastic, some of them are so close to flamebaiting that any user besides Rol would be immediately banned for them. NinjaBlade is a newcomer, but I really can't understand why he hasn't been permabanned at this point. I've seen Ethomaz turn perfectly normal threads into trainwrecks (Most recent example: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=159027&page=1#). KylieDog, S.T.A.G.E and VGKing most of the time seem to respond to posts in a way that's guaranteed to invoke a negative reaction, aka borderline flamebaiting (KylieDog must be the most depressive person I've never met in person)...out of my head these seem to be the most blatant "offenders"...

Hehe I always love it when S.T.A.G.E. posts in one of my threads, because while I don't think most of what he says is offensive or rulebreaking, it certainly promotes "discussion" . KylieDog has a negative opinion about many things and he has occasionally crossed the line and got banned for it. VGKing gets occasionally banned too. NinjaBlade is practically always banned :O

I have to say I personally don't really get offended by them anymore (ignoring someone DOES work afterall), but I've seen quite some newbies who weren't as lucky when meeting them for the first time...

Give me a break.

People make jokes about men on here constantly. Your on forums on the Internet grow tougher skin

Why should she (or anybody else, including males) should grow tougher skin for browsing a forum?

The first job of a moderator should be to create a healthy and fun environment on the site that they are moderating, for all the users. I think the mods of this site are failing at that however I basically don't care about personal attacks or trolling so it doesn't bothers me that much, but is obvious that it bothers some people.

And if I say that your post offends me as a moderator, does that illustrate how impossible it is to make everyone happy at the same time?

you are right its impossible to make everyone happy and there is no way for the mods to bann everyone who offends other people over anything whether its a simple joke or a serious insult. but i think there is a miscommunication between what marucha is saying and what you are saying. this isnt just marucha just feeling this, this is something that females on here are having a problem with, im not saying galaki's post should be moderated. im saying that the females on this site feel that there is a problem and maybe the mods should look into it.

please dont take this like i am trying to criticise you or any other mod i am just trying to help make the community better by giving my opinion on the matter
