I didn't know Nintendo re-made themselves in 1947. I thought they had been the same company since 1889.

Yeah, I was also suprised when I read this. I don't see a source for this statement, though (probably hidden on the japanese website of Nintendo). But since it lines up with Forbes info (which is a reliable source) I suspect it is true.

The company began in 1889 as Nintendo Koppai.  It was renamed Yamauchi Nintendo & Company in 1933.  Again renamed to Marufuku Company, Ltd in 1947 (why Forbes calls this the founding date of the company makes absolutely no sense).  Another name change came about in 1949: Nintendo Playing Card Company, Limited.  Marufuku Company, Limited was itself branched off into a distribution sub-division within the company and renamed Nintendo Karuta Company, Limited.  They went public in 1962 and 1 year finalized the name we know today: Nintendo Company, Limited.

Maybe they are refering to some date of registration in the 1940s which signaled the official start of Nintendo. Maybe Nintendo provides this number because its the correct one from a bureaucratic view point ? Data got lost in the war or something ?
