Forums - Sony - PS3 never made a comeback! PS3 has consistently outsold X360

spurgeonryan said:
So you are saying that with first year alone, and holiday it has not made a comeback? Holidays are what makes or break sales. So to not count holidays, you are pretty much ignoring 360 dominance.
It has made a hefty comeback and is now out selling the 360 world wide on a regular basis.

It's not that I'm NOT counting the holidays, I'm just saying that the PS3 has continuously outsold the X360 for the better part of the year, and has done so from the get go more or less.

Continuously outselling your competition almost from the start isn't making a comeback since you're doing better than the competition.

What about the SNES then? Did that console make a comeback?

1. 360 lost its lead to Wii.

2.360 never did a comeback because it was became 2nd and always had signs of the PS3 passing it. PS3 has possibility of getting very close to Wii.

3. 360 comeback is irrelevant to PS3 comeback.

1. PS3 is still in 3rd place.

2. PS3 never made a comeback; it just continued to sell better than the competition for the better part of the year (excluding Wii sales)

1. It went from a faraway 3rd place, to a close 3rd place. And possibly a close 2nd place. Marketshare terms: went from 22% to 30%. Could go to 33% assuming generous sales of 360.

2.I am of course including Wii as Wii was its main competitor for the generation. Wii was the first console to dethrone a PS home console from 1st place. Excluding Wii is like excluding PS2 and comparing gamecube and Xbox.

It was only a far away 3rd because it launched later than X360, but already from the get go it was closing that gap, and continued to do so - that's not making a come back. A comeback is: a return to being popular or fashionable - and since PS3 never WENT OUT of fashion, and never became UNpopular it can't make a comeback. There wasn't anything to make a comeback from.

Clearly when Wii was the best selling console the PS3 was not popular or fashionable. However after Wii stopped selling so well, the PS3 went back to being popular and fashionable as its best year selling was 2011. And it has stayed in 1st WW paving its way back to being popular.

I think we have had a good discussion so far, but I am going to have to leave. I think we could have this conversation for a very long time but neither of us may be convinced. If by my leaving that you consider it me conceding defeat then so be it.

Why do you keep spreading that falsehood, even after you've been proven wrong?  In 2008, the 360 added almost 3/4 of a million to the gap.  So no, it wasn't from the get go.  It took 3 years for the PS3 to start outselling it consistantly.  Also, you say the PS3 never went out of fashion or became unpopular, but before admited to it makeing an image comeback.  So, which is it?

As for your response to me, I'll hold you to that thread.

I think we've had a good discussion as well, and I don't think you're conceding defeat. We can both agree to disagree =)

I simply agree with the OP

Me too, would like to add though that a "comeback" is quite a loaded term in the context it's being chucked around on here as if it's the second coming of christ.

It had some peaks and troughs in sales...

Can we also say that the Xbox 360 makes a massive comeback every year during the Holidays?

What about the Xbox 360's comeback in 2010?

I wouldn't bother saying the Xbox 360 had a comeback either.

Neither did anything incredible. The sales were shite because it was overpriced.

You start selling something for less and it's sales will increase, shock horror, what a surprise!

Man, I wish someone could make a culminative graphic about this...

It's not like the PS3 was unpopular, even though it wasn't the number 1 on everybody's wishing list. If the PS3 was unpopular then so was X360; it's not like it solg much much more than PS3 during this period.

End of the day mate, you're spot on with the OP and I won't mince my words :D

If we even need to debate if it made a comeback or not - Then it obviously didn't!

A "comeback" should not be open to question or need answering...by it's nature, where on earth has there ever been a comeback that needed explaining or could be questioned, a "comeback" is visual, it's obvious.

THIS ISN'T!!!!!!

So stand up for yourself and unload :p your evidence in the OP is more compelling than any crap after it!

Exactly (beat me to it).

And the SNES/Super Famicom launched two full years after the Genesis/Mega Drive.

Did the SNES launch to an already established Gensis gap of ~7M?  Doubt it, considering the Genesis took 10 years to sell ~40M units and sales only really took off around the SNES launch.  Was the SNES ~$200 more than the Genesis?  Impossible, since the SNES launched for $200.  Did the SNES suffer from bad gaming press and a negative image from the general gaming public?  Nah.  Only Sega fans really bashed it.  Did it get poor 1st party and 3rd party support for the first 2 years?  Nope, it received great support from the get go.  Not exactly the same situation, at all.
