Forums - Sony - How much money Sony really lost with the PS3

Ya...with PS4 and xbox around the corner. Sales have allready declined YOY. Still gonna take 3 years with your current sales trends (and Wii is still selling a few million yearly).

You still didnt address the other points, which you should know.

I think PS3 sales will not declined that much... 25 million in three years is 8 million per year... Wii is not selling and just will beach 100 million next year.

About the 360... yest the game division became profitable in 2008 or 2009 but you forget in 2006 and 2007 the same division posted ~3 billion loss... just in the last quarter they finally covered there 3 billion loss and now it is all about real profit... no more 360 loss to cover.... in any case the XBOX loss will never covered lol lol lol (I'm kidding... maybe if the Nextbox do over 5 billion in profit).

How would anyone know what is happening in the next years? There are markets like the whole of South America, India, China. The PS4nextBox will be too expensive for those markets, like the current comnsoles mostly are. If Sony can replace the PS2 by the PS3 in those markets, price wise or even undercutting the price, the current 25 million gap could be eradicated over time. Noone knows the plans of Sony, or Nintendo, or MS.

This is very much in the veins of a thread I created back in 2012 - http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=148745&page=1

Furthermore, judging from Sony's Q3 quarter, the gaming division of Sony posted a net profit of 6 million US. Sony will most likely post a loss this quarter due to the recent price reduction of the VITA. As a result, Sony needs a new strategy in order to remain 'relevant', profitable and an industry leader.

Whee did you get these numbers?

Sony posted 46 million dollars profit for Game Division in Q3 2012... for the FY2012 is accumulated in 510 million dollars.

Why Sony you post loss in this quarter? And for the FY?

Their (Sony's) 10 year plan was a failure.

Why? They can profit in the next three/four years... and I think PS3 will be in the market for more than 10 years.

also PS3 was one of the main reasons why blueray won the format war, this doesnt calculate the money sony is making off of blueray disks

This!

PS3 did a huge thing - it established Blu-ray as a new standard medium. Now every single BD player and every single BD disc sold earns Sony money. This money isn't attributed to the Gaming Division, but Sony would have never earned it without the PS3 and has the costs of establishing BD format put into this division. Without the data on the profits coming from BD we can't judge what the PS3 really did.

Sony never earned a cent of profit in the last 4 years.

So wherever this Bluray money is coming from.....it didn't offset the losses. Just saying.

this thread is about sony's game devision not sony as a whole. dont twist and turn just to try make the ps3 look bad like you always do. the point is clear and it makes perfect sense. we all know what is making sony lose money and never has anybody said it was bleuray (or lack of blueray) sales before you, so just give it a rest

I guess you are referring to the past 9 months, aren't you?

Anyway the accumulated profits for the past 9 months of the gaming division are 37 million USD.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

not suprised sony lost so much money with the ps3. The formula of having a high end console that costs lets say 800 to manufacture and 600 to retail is digging a huge hole for them to dive into, ps3 sold at a major loss.. The wii was weak but proftible is why i worry ps4 is going to make the same mistake.

Yeah... So what's your point here? Sony never earned a profit these years cause it lost sick cash on TVs, but it doesn't have anything to do with what we're talking about. We don't know how much it earned on BD, but we know that the reason PS3 has struggled so much and posted these losses was in a huge part caused by Sony pushing BD as the new standard. Now calculating the PS3 profits ignoring all the money that BD brought is just unfair and pointless.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.
