Forums - Sony - How much money Sony really lost with the PS3

The only thing I forgot was the PS4 R&D. So the losses might be as low as 4.5 - 5.5 billion USD.
Vita might account for another 300 - 500 millions. That's 4 billion - 5 billion!

And it still is a very positive estimation for the PS3.

To prove my point, here is an Interview with Howard Stringer, former CEO of Sony from 2008:

"Q: You have spent three billion dollars on the Playstation 3, disregarding research and development. Can you ever get your money back?
Stringer: Not for as long as I live (laughs)."

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

There are no way to know because most of the loss came from Bravia HDTVs.

I think PS3 is profitable to Sony. Anyway the MS just covered all 360 costs in the last quarter results... the game division had over 3 billion loss in the first years of 360.... now they covered every loss in the first years (in the Dec 2012 results they are tied).

Profitable now. Covered all the costs for its lifetime? Not even close and likely never will.

The ps3 was a failure. This is already known. Will probably sell more than the 360 which the sony fans claim is a victory, but they fail to realise that the ps3 cost sony billions and no profit, which makes it the ultimate failure.

PS3 will probably sell more than Wii.

PS3 is reason to Sony to be on track today... they lost a lot of money with it in the early years but after that only profited... the most part of the loss in the division was because the Bravia HDTV. The best thing Kaz did was to split the division... now the Game Division is just for PlayStation related products... so after that no loss was posted for the division.

Like I said even the Game Division of Microsoft just started o be profitable in the last quarter... previous that they are only covering the initial loss with the 360 development... and I think they will never cover the XBOX costs.

No....no. So much wrong here. Whats irritating is that you don't believe your trolling.....you actually believe what your saying. That makes you worse IMO.

PS3 will likely not outsell the Wii and would take 3+ years if sales trends stay the same (which they won't). Stop acting like its gonna happen when its so far away with tons of factors.

Gaming is NOT Sonys biggest subsidiary.PS3 didnt start profiting until 2010.

360 profited since 2008. Not last quarter....2008. 2008. I cant stress that enough.

PS3 became profitable to Sony in FY2009 (ends March 2010) and before that they loss ~3.5 billion dollars in the division... I guess they already covered 1.0-1.5 billion of this loss... so now they need to cover the others 2.0m billion... hard but I believe Sony can at least tie the looses in 2015-2016.

Far away? less than 25 million to go... three years of sales.

Ya...with PS4 and xbox around the corner. Sales have allready declined YOY. Still gonna take 3 years with your current sales trends (and Wii is still selling a few million yearly).

You still didnt address the other points, which you should know.

This is very much in the veins of a thread I created back in 2012 - http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=148745&page=1

Edit: Furthermore, judging from Sony's Q3 quarter, the gaming division of Sony posted an operating income of 46 million US. Sony will most likely post a loss this quarter due to the recent price reduction of the VITA. As a result, Sony needs a new strategy in order to remain 'relevant', profitable and an industry leader.

also PS3 was one of the main reasons why blueray won the format war, this doesnt calculate the money sony is making off of blueray disks

This!

PS3 did a huge thing - it established Blu-ray as a new standard medium. Now every single BD player and every single BD disc sold earns Sony money. This money isn't attributed to the Gaming Division, but Sony would have never earned it without the PS3 and has the costs of establishing BD format put into this division. Without the data on the profits coming from BD we can't judge what the PS3 really did.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Sony never earned a cent of profit in the last 4 years.

So wherever this Bluray money is coming from.....it didn't offset the losses. Just saying.
