Forums - Sony - PS4 Is 'Not A Successor' To PS3 But 'An Addition To The Family'

That exactly what I said every dam time here...

PS4 will not cannibalize the PS3 sales... both will live in the market together for a long time... exclusive games will be released for both.

Sony... err I mean Kaz will full support PS3, PSV and PS4 for years.

Nintendo said this about the DS in relation to the GBA, and it was obviously not true

It was true for PS3 vs. PS2 for while. Nintendo is quite unlike Sony in this regard. They had killed Wii even before they released WiiU, same with GC (although GC at least got a Zelda near the end)

Wii also got a Zelda near the end. If you remember the GC was already killed off long before Twilight was released. It was supposed to be released much earlier but Nintendo decided to hold it off and make it a release title for the Wii.

Not sure how important this guy is but every new console is basically a successor and an addition to the family.

of cause its not PS3 successor since it doesn't support PS3 games...

What utter nonsense.

Marketing speak.

Agreed. And agreed with Radish. Been there, done that.

Exactly. Its an entirely new console. It definitely won't replace your PS3, it'll live side by side for 1-2 years.

Eventually, it will replace the PS3, obviously. For PS4 to be a successor to the PS3, it would have to replace it, which its not able to do due to lack of backwards compatibility and high price of entry.

"While most gamers will be casting aside or trading in their PS3s when the PS4 does launch at the end of this year,"

Wouldn't PS4 have to sell like 40m by the end of the year for that to be true (aka "most" of the PS3 install base)?

The SNES wasn't a successor to the NES (the NES remained supported until 1995 I believe), the Cube wasn't a successor to the N64 (it sold nearly two times less), the Saturn wasn't a successor to the Genesis (30m vs 8m), on and on and on.

What flawed conclusions bending words leads to.

All they are saying is that you are gonna keep your PS3 because of no BC and the ps3 will continue have support going into 2014+15. At least from 3rd parties and PSN titles.

Except the truth is that the PS4 is the successor to the PS3, as the PS3 was to the PS2 and as the PS2 was to the PS1.

The real information you should take from this is the giveaway that it's from a Middle East source, we all know that consoles in lesser developed countries don't launch at the same time and the older console stays as the main one for much longer even years after release of the successor.

Take PS2/PS3 for example, in some countries the PS2 is still sold as a modern console.

News means nothing and people will take this out of context. It doesn't actually mean anything anyway, it's not Sony's decision on if it's a successor/or a member of the family. That's down to publishers and if they decide to continue support with original content for the PS3/older console.

Historically it's been proven time and time again that "latest addition to the family" type comments are basically 100% PR fluff to give a positive spin on an old product. The symptom of which and reality is that the older console receives little to no new original content and is swamped with poor quality ports from the next gen of consoles.

PS1/PS2/PS3 - Both the same things happened there too, and the interesting part to prove the point even further is that the PS2 install base was incredily high but even then it got virtually no original content after the PS3 released. Only in Japan was the case different.

Also MegaDrive/Genesis, same there.
SNES - Same there.
n64 - got dropped completely more or less.

All I can say is, if you enjoy playing Sports games then this won't be a problem ;)
