Courtesy of Jaywood2010. He made a separate thread which I locked so I'm posting this here on his behalf. I've added some further clarifications in italic + underline.

Xbox Live ACTIVITY charts. The key word is ACTIVITY. Doesn't matter if someone is playing multiplayer, single-player, survival or whatever. These are all counted in the chart. The games with the most activity are at the top of the chart and this is based on unique users. Obviosly, the higher the game charts, the higher the peak player count will be.

I don't see why people don't understand this. The whole point of this thread is to show that Halo isn't what it used to be. Whether that is because of other games which have exploded in popularity or due to Halo 4 not being that good, that's what we should be discussing.

That isn't daily players, its the peak of the day. Even right now there is almost 30K people playing. I know that because I actually own the game.

Hence, unless its the same people playing 24 hours, there are probably a few hundred thousand people playing a day. Oh boy, what a flop.

I know that. Of course I dont' expect the same people to be playing 24/7. That peak is very very low though considering the sales. 

If anyone owns both Halo 4 and Mw3, feel free to boot both games up and screencap the current online players.

MW3 has 63K playing, and 86K online. Confirmed, Halo 4 is a flop because its not the king of online multiplayer.

Not the most online players = Flop

Why do you have to be so defensive? Compared to 3 it's not doing too well in that regard. I don't agree with calling it a flop but clearly there's an issue.

Last time I played Halo 3 (less than a year ago) the population stats showed ~26k at night... is is the same the Halo 4 is geting in the recent nights.

Halo 3 after 5 years have the same numbers than Halo 4 after 5 months.

The game simply isn't as competitive as Halo 2 or 3 were. Even MLG is having trouble supporting it and Halo is what kick-started MLG.
