So I'm updating my rig but I'm not much knowledgeable when it comes to graphics cards, when companies decide to launch new models etc. Basically I want the 7970 (which is top dog for AMD, excluding the overpriced 7990) but a friend told me the 8000 series is in bound. But when ?

He also said that when the new series come, most probably only the top 2 or 3 cards will actually be better than a 7970, think the numerical nomenclature usually used by amd, only the 88xx and above will actually be better than the 7970. With the other cards being basically overpriced rebrandings.

Whit all this said, I'm a total noob and I pretend to have a complete updated rig by June. Should I wait or what ?? 

What are you running now? I can't really say for sure without knowing specifically what you're upgrading from.

I heard that it may be as late as the end of this year before we see the next GPU range due to fabrication issues that both Nvidia and AMD were having, but that was a few months ago.

Totally depends on whether you want to wait or not really. If you've something to tie you over till the next AMD range, waiting out will always mean you get more for your money. Basically throw in the towel when you really want/need to update your rig.

The HD 7970 is a great GPU but if you can wait early 2014 to buy the new HD 8970 then wait... you can buy the HD 7970 a lot cheaper when the HD 8970 is out too.

It all depends if you can wait or not... if not then you will not regret with the HD 7970.

As long as you get the Ghz edition you should be sweet for a long time, 8XX0 is still a ways off

I'm on Nvidia GT8800 with 1gb.

It is already struggling on medium settings to play the latest games.

By the feedback I see it is a good idea to buy it. By the time the 89xx comes out I can sell this one claiming it is half-new with valid warranty still.

Agreed with the input so far.

The HD 8xxx series is too far off and won't provide a large enough increase in performance against the HD 7970. And the HD 7970 will likely run most games at max settings and high resolutions for the next few years anyway.

I have an HD 7950 and have yet to find anything at 1920 x 1080 that brings it to its knees.

Try Minesweeper.

I'm serious. The game runs like 12 FPS on GTX 680...

I may actually have to FRAPS that just to see it.
