Looking as RAM was pretty much the biggest thing holding current consoles back, I think that it would be a good idea. If we could add another 512 MB to PS360 and enjoy better graphics, many people would go for it. Though as people are saying, 8 GB seems to be quite a lot now, but you never know what will happen in 4-5 years. Many gaming PCs have 16 GB now and it's not like RAM is that expensive as well.

Wii U would surely benefit from it, as 2 GB of slow RAM is just pityful. Damn, the more I think of this console, the more I'm shocked by just how much Nintendo messed up. I mean, it would be so easy and not that expensive to make Wii U a much more viable platform and actually give yourself a chance at getting fair 3rd party support. I'm not sure at this point if this option of adding 2 GB would change something here, highly doubt it.
Do you think they could double the RAM in a year or two? I mean, it's not like that didn't happen - Sony doubled RAM in PSP at one point. It would be funny to watch the consequences of that ;)

One thing i was really hoping for is that for the ps4 Sony could make it so that in the future you can crossfire the gpu so we can get better graphics as the years go by. I would imagine if MS made the next xbox more powerful than the ps4 then sony might have to upgrade their specs for a crossfire machine.

I am guessing there is a reason this has never been done before. I mean at some point all gamers must have asked this question. So have the manufacturers.

Personally I rather this didn't happen, that would be the end of the console. It then becomes another desktop computer like the mac or pc. After RAM what next? The capability to upgrade the processors?

I believe that MS at some point will blur the boundaries between console and PC. Their consoles will run Office and can, if needed, be used in one.

Not even possible in todays age of high speed RAM. Simply having the functionality there to allow this would cost more than the RAM needed to run at this "high" setting. It would be confusing for consumers except in the simplist of implimentations like with the n64 and Saturn where you needed the extra RAM to play the game or it was automatic but the game only benefitted from a higher resolution, not improved textures as with the n64. Higher resolution wouldn't be the end result in this modern age though because it's not the quanity of RAM that's the problem but the speed of the video RAM in use. It would make coding a nightmare, introuduce bugs into games.

Not going to happen. What gives consoles, however weak or powerful, the advantage over PCs is that they are closed systems. You make 1 version of the game that's going to run on 100% of the consoles you build it for.

If you want upgradable RAM, graphic cards or CPU, buy a PC. Or you can even buy the Ouya.

I think the Steam Box may be the first console that will look if there is a market for such things. I think that upgradable RAM and the possibility of adding a second GPU for crossfire is a brilliant idea and wish it was possible in the current gen. It would last 2-3 years longer.
