Forums - Sony - VGLeaks: Playstation 4 architecture evolution over time

Many people thought that PS4 constantly changed its architecture, but this is not true at all. In this article we will see 2 “pictures” of Playstation 4 and how it has evolved over the time. We are going to see that not all the components and speeds in the system are better than before.

The first picture shows the system at mid 2011 (almost 2 years from now):

You can easily see some differences between this diagram and the final system shown the last month:

- 2 x86 core pairs (in this case the system would mount steamroller cpus)
- 4 GB instead of 8 GB
- RAM bandwith is set to 192 GB/s

Additionally you can see the system’s buses:

- “Garlic” bus between GPU and Memory (192 GB/s)
- “Onion” buses between GPU and Memory through CPU (12 GB/s shared)
- CPU bus between CPU and Memory (less than 20 GB/s)

The second picture (early 2013) shows the evolution in PS4:

There are 2 main differences:

- The 4 cores have been “upgraded” to 8 cores (this time as we know they are Jaguar cores instead Steamroller)
- RAM amount is still the same (4 GB, this change is very recent)
- Almost all the speeds are “downgraded”.

So now we have:

- “Garlic” bus between GPU and Memory (176 GB/s)
- “Onion” buses between GPU and Memory through CPU (10 GB/s shared)
- CPU bus between CPU and Memory (less than 20 GB/s). The only one apparently untouched.

As you can see, not all the changes in PS4 are made to improve the system performance. Major changes are the type of CPU and mostly the RAM amount in the system.

Pretty much was the evolution in my comparison thread as well.

More interesting has been the neXtBox's evolution as its change entire architecture bases.

I wish I understood what these things meant. Looks like, but cannot wait for the next evo.

They just removed some onion and garlic. Even I can understand that.

This doesn't show the 2010 rebid, before which it was Intel Larrabee.

"Onion" and "Garlic" don't mean anything special, confirmed by AMD rep when they appeared in Llano in 2011.

Never heard about Sony wanting Larrabee in the PS4. There an article about that?

Also I wonder how the Jaguar cores (8x) stack up against the old steamroller design.

8 Jaguar cores @ 1.6GHz will be weaker than 4 Steamroller cores at >3.5GHz (since 3-4GHz was the Bulldozer design target frequency, operating lower wouldn't make sense even in a console).

Larrabee story: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1050851/intel-design-playstation-gpu

The author of this story was the first to say PS4 would use AMD CPU+GPU a year ago. The Larrabee version was ditched at the same time Intel dropped the consumer version because it was too hot/expensive/slow/late. That story also says AMD in Wii and X360 successors.

@Soleron

Ah right, thanks :)

Not sure how I feel about the weaker CPU.. although, they might they downgraded it to fit in a better GPU. Since it has a much lower TDP.

The old rumour for the Orbis dev kit - AMD A8-3850 APU + HD7670.

Its stll going to be awesome
