Forums - Gaming - This is big: Unity coming to Sony consoles this year

Nice, though not surprising really - after all, Sony does want as much game devs on their platform as possible, and Unity being indie/small devs darling is best way to assure that will happen, specially in combination with self-publishing model Sony announced for PS4.

That said, I can see more small-mid devs moving to UE4 in the future (let's be honest, Unity simply can't technically compete with it) - Epic realized in last couple of years how much attention Unity is getting from them (inXile upcoming Wasteland 2 and Torment, Obsidian's Project Eternity, Playdead's (Limbo) next game, to name just few) and they sure don't want to miss that boat - I think that's why one of most interesting things Mark Rein talked about in GT's post Sony conference show was UE4 for small devs and self-publishing on PS4.

Thats cool but kinda expected. i actually use unity a lot and love it. Its not a super strong engine or anything, but I always feel like you can do a lot with it. Honestly I kinda hated using the unreal engine and when i hear about this a few years ago i was super happy with how it worked.

This can only be good for PS3/Vita surely?

I'd be more surprised if they DIDN'T develop for the PS4...

The whole point behind Unity was to get a unified engine that could work across all major hardware plaforms (hence the name).

Great! I've mucked around a little on Unity...Its alright, seems to be quite popular.

Unity is multiplatform and cross platform , when you make a game it will work on any platform, even on a browser, which is why Unity is seriously one of the best things to happen to gaming recently, it puts the high end engines to shame, plus its actually looks good , really good.

And much of it for the low price of "free".

how does it compare with sony's phyre engine

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

And you really think that small studios and indie developers have pockets deep enough to licence those engines?

Unity (Basic) is free. The Pro version however, is not.

Yeah but still.  Unity Pro is really cheap even in comparison.  I think fully loaded it's only like 6K?  With no royalty payments.

It's 1.5K for the barebones product...

when you load up on the whole kit it's 6K.

1.5 for Unity + 1.5 for IOS Pro + 1.5 for Android Pro + 1.5 for Flash Pro.

Which is quite the deal still.  The various PS stuff might cost extra when released but still.
