to everybody who is asking whats unity, its an engine and here is there tech demo

Now why is this big news?  Technically it doesnt even look amazing unless I'm missing something here?  I mean Unreal Engine, Frostbite, and Cryengine all look better

because its an engine that powers a good number of games. this isnt big big, but its still important. now i could be wrong about this, but from what i remember that the engine is usually used by developers on a tight budget, devs who want to make the games cheaper and i heard its pretty easy to use. what i also understand is that its pretty popular in the mobile space. what this means is that indie devs who use this or mobile devs can bring there games to PS4, vita and PS mobile, when you look at the devs who use this its clear that this is pretty good news for both the vita and PS mobile. and if unity keeps growing it could become really important for PS4 as well

also yes it doesnt look all that great, this demo was released august last year. but the prupose of this demo (from what i can tell) is to show the fluidity of the animations and facial animations. as well as cloth simulations (which are pretty amazing if you ask me)

I can understand the tight budget part but from what I see on the video is that it was already announced to be on PS4/NeXbox/WiiU.  I would consider big like saying the new BF4 is coming to WiiU with full scale multiplayer because that would be surprising.  This is not surprising, it looks meh, and I cant see many people really caring.

The thing is I would have never even asked or be saying any of this if it wasnt for the title saying it is big.  I'd say most people doesnt even know what Unity is. To me this sounds like somebody trying to make something out to be big when in reality it isn't

And you really think that small studios and indie developers have pockets deep enough to licence those engines?

Unity (Basic) is free. The Pro version however, is not.

As you saw me ask before, Ive never even heard of Unity so i was unaware that this was built for cheap budgets.  Even so we have plenty of good looking indie games.  If this helps indie games take off better then cool

well this just confirms that unity is coming to ps4. why pezus said big in the tittle i dont know, i wouldnt have said it if i made the thread but it doesnt really matter. but if this happened in 5 years ago and they announced say ps3 support i wouldnt have said this is big. but now i would say this is rather important, considering the rise of indie games and sony's stategy at supporting them and how they want to embrace and grow the indie space i would say this is a rather important part of that stategy.

its not as popular as unreal or cry engine between gamers, but for developers its certainly well known and a rather good option for smaller devs

That I'll agree on.  Anyways as you said this is cool if it helps indie games.  Indie games are definitely on the rise.  In fact I probably bought more Indie/Arcade games last year than $60 retail games.

As a matter of fact, yes. My first game will be a combination of engines/products, Unity 4.0 being the biggest!

I've heard you say a few times that you are working on something.  Do you work for a studio or is it indipendent?

Put it away man!

Edit: I don't mean the game/project you're working on if you're thinking that. I just have a dirty mind lol

They gave away free Basic licenses (400$ worth x2) for publishing Unity games to iOS and Android platforms last year. That was pretty big as those licenses could also be used for upgrades towards the Pro versions.
