Forums - Sony - Sony dropping th 80GB in favor of 120-160GB with Dual Shock 3

Assuming this is true, then i can almost garauntee it wont have b/c. Why? Because they want to push people in to downloading older games from the psn store. B/c is expensive and sony is desperatley trying to get the price down.

No, it's not expensive. The graphics synthesizer chip (the difference between the 80gb and the 40gb) is known to cost less than $30, and probably less than $10. Most of the remaining cost savings in the 40gb come from shrinking the cell processor, and consequently putting in a cheaper power supply and less cooling hardware. Future PS3 models will have these same revisions.

Jack Tretton himself admitted that BC wasn't dropped to save money, but to stop people from buying PS2 games for their PS3s. It was a stupid reason to drop BC then, and it's even stupider now.

I think there's almost no doubt that this model will be backwards compatible. Even ignoring the more obvious arguments, it would be awfully hard for them to justify the $100 price difference without it.

There's no doubt they will follow up the 80GB with another in the $499 range to keep the $399/$499 set up, UNLESS of course they plan to put all their resources to the 40GB in which case they lower production costs more and we see another price drop.

it would make sense to bundle the DS3 if it was true, then with that and the rumored 40GB white PS3 coming (at least to the US) then they all would have the DS3; except for the current 40GB Spiderman 3 bundle. Then, they dump the movie and toss in a DS3. of course, this is all hypothetical.

I heard that the 120-160 GB were going to be the same price as the 40-80gb. and the 40 GB would go down to $299? but these are all rumors at the moment?

I still don't see it happening.

Personally, I don't believe Sony will drop the price by more than 50$/€ during the first half of the year. If the the 120+gb PS3 comes out, the 40GB version might perhaps drop 50$.
What Sony probably will do, is bundle the cheaper PS3 version with other stuff, like "buy a Bravia LCD and get 40gb PS3 for 300$" or more blu-ray movies or PS3 blu-ray disk remote etc.

Lost my faith in VGChartz. Too many stupid and ignorant Americans, even as moderators.

It's a shame, really. "The Boss" should do something radical about this Americanization, but it seems hardly feasible, so my days here are numbered.

I've heard no such rumor, but I firmly believe that, yes.
