Forums - Microsoft - Since when has the 360 been $99 dollars a piece?

That is amazing to me! No more room for anymore price cuts. Cheaper than he Wii! I would have thought sales would be much higher.

Just saw a commercial after the New Gears of War advertisement that said it was this price.

But I thought the Wii was $100 straight up...

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Yeah, I just barely noticed it on Tv. I am surprised these things are not flying off the shelves!

People are probably smarter than Microsoft gives them credit for.

or not given that the 360 is the most popular console in sales for 26 month straight and grows its install base lead month on month on month....

You really think this $99 Xbox 360 w/ 2 year contract is actually affecting sales? The Xbox 360 has been #1 in the US for 26 months straight because of the decline of the Wii, nothing more.

Or the fact that the console is 8 years old and this subscription based model is only available at select retailers like GameStop and Best Buy.

Lol "select retailers" followed by Best Buy. Too funny, add Toys R' Us and Walmart to your "select retailers".

Fair enough. Though even to this day, the $99 promotion has seen little marketing outside of apparently this new TV ad and some online buzz. I just checked, and you don't even find the $99 deals on any of the online websites for Best Buy, Walmart, Gamestop, etc if you look in the typical places (Video Games > Xbox 360 > Console/Systems). You can only access the $99 deal if you happen to see the ad for it on their main Xbox 360 pages.

I really don't think it was meant to be a system seller promotion given the console is 8 years old and most people wanting a cheap Xbox probably don't want that added contract. However, starting off next generation with this type of promotion would do wonders. Xbox 8 for $199 with 2 year $15/month contract instead of paying $399 would be a pretty decent system seller at that point.

It's not only with the Gears of War ad, they also had it with the Tomb Raider ads and Dead Space 3. They are HEAVILY promoting this.

Like I said, it isn't really going to be a system seller this late in the game. Starting a new generation with this model, though, could do gangbusters.

I found this tactic with the subscription based model of 99$ rather interesting.

Does anyone know how many consoles Microsoft was able to sell this way? If it was successfull, they might employ it for the Nextbox. Which could be a big game changer IMO.

If MS can sell many units like that then why wouldn't Sony and Nintendo introduce it as well?

I'm sure they would, if it were proven succesfull. That's one of the reasons why i would like to see numbers about this.

I was mostly referring to a game changer for the industry itself. With new pricing structures and all that.

Yeah I agree that it could move a lot of units and it makes a little bit more money. I'd be surprised if Sony doens't at least try this for the PS4.

I'm not sure why MS didn't just make the 360 "free" and then charge people $18 a month. Perhaps that would have shifted more units and it would have made the same amount of money.

thats right... nobody has taken advantage of this deal... nobody.

I'm sure some people have fallen for it. But sales keep falling YoY. The amount of people "taking advantage" of this is very low and not large enough to negate the end of gen decline in sales.

I do believe you can get a Wii in the US with Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort for $130...

It's a nice option for people but with the 720 likely to launch this year, it doesn't make a lot of sense to get the 360 on a two year subscription plan.

Still 400 dollars here in Brazil, with no Hard Drive or HDMI cables. =/

wtf? lol.

Of course they are falling year on year, isnt that natural in its 8th year?   You expect them to remain flat or increase?

You have no idea how popular this... but they continue with it so there is clearly demand.

A console going from $250 to $99 overnight would dramatically increase sales. When this "deal" was made available we saw little to no effect. In fact 360 sales are down YOY the same if not more than the PS3 in the US aren't they?

If this $99 Xbox 360 had any noticable effect we would see it in the sales. If you have proof that it did have any effect on sales, I'd love to see some proof.

@bold
Sony continues to sell 3G Vitas despite there being little to no demand for it. So just because they continue to sell something, it doesn't mean there is demand for it. This $99 Xbox w/ 2 year contract isn't hurting them so they have no reason to discontinue it. Besides, it makes for great TV ads. We won't see any $199 PS3 Tv ads, ever.
