Forums - Gaming - An 84? An 81?... 45!? Whats Going on With All The Games Ratings? Are All Of Them Below Expectation?

OT: Honestly, this whole metacritic thing is getting out of hand. You should read the content of reviews and use that to judge whether the game is going to be right for you. For example, I find the Atelier series fun. Professional reviewers do not. If I relied solely on their ratings, I would never have got into the series. Instead, I read the content of their reviews and decided "hmm, all the things they're talking about sound quite fun to me", so I bought a game and there we go.

You're right. Relying on one reviewer is a bad idea but I find metacritic helps as it gives a good range of how it's like

never said it wasnt good but lots of games seem to be less than what they should be. Like GoW:A is 79 right? Maybe it should be around 85-90?

Why would the new GOW be 90?  Explain please.  And dont get fooled by the 79  which is basically a 80 and this is just 5 off from your 85-90.

beginning and final bosses are some of the series' best, a couple little nuances to make it smoother (autosave and level select, while not ground breaking, are new to the series so should be chalked up as an improvement).  Elemental powers are a nice addition without trying to force weapons other than the blades on you.  It's very challenging and has some new combat nuances that make it a little deeper.  The visuals I didn't think PS3 was capable of (once again lol) have been achieved so a little credit there.  Overall I'd give it a 9 cause that's what I think of GoW3 as and this one was on par and gave me a fun new romp so it didn't feel stale.

Okay makes sense.

TBH I also think every game should be rated on its own merit. I mean if you( the reviewers )played GOD 1+2+3 and the PSP parts and the new one  well....  GOOD FOR YOU!

Same goes for Mario games.  But reviewers somewhat forget that NOT EVERYONE played the previous entries. So saying  its actually better than the predecessor but then giving it a lower rating because its too much of the same  makes NO SENSE and distorts the truth (and might confuse potential buyers)

P.S. I just watched a short video (a digital foundry video?)  and yup the game looks really gorgeous!

Yeah I only judge MP based games on the previous entries.  Like if COD doesn't improve at all, then it could have just been a map pack instead of a new $60 game since the SP is usually terrible and most people play for MP.  For a game like GoW as long as I get new bosses, adventure, settings, powers, and stuff I'm good.   The key is that I don't feel like I'm playing the same game, and I've never felt that in GoW.  Same with Uncharted it's an awesome new adventure.  To compare to movies Indiana Jones movies were basically the same formula but each was awesome so the original shouldn't be rated an higher than Last Crusade imo (Last Crusade is my favorite of course so maybe I'm biased).

I guess its time to change "great" being 90s, to 80s.

Take my love, take my land..

Etrian Odyssey IV scored quite favorably but I don't think anyone even knows that game exists. Though I don't think the casual gamer cares too much about review scores as long as they get to play the next iteration of a game they liked. There is no number that can equate to the joy of getting that first gold star in Super Mario 64.

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward = best game ever made.

Tell me about it, Metal Gear Rising, God of War, Tomb Raider, Ni No Kuni, DmC, heck Dead Space 3 was panned.

Its the timing, if these games came out at the beginning of the console cycle, we would see a few more 90s. Too be honest though, these reviewers are doing their jobs properly which is to critically evaluate the game, thats good for us as the consumer and its very healthy constructive criticism for the publisher and the developer.

Thats exactly what we need for improvements and innovation.

Meh I stopped reading reviews long time ago. I usually play the demos or check out some game play on youtube.

The industry is moving on but many (especially) console games didn't, Tomb Raider/GoW/Halo 4/Ni No Kuni..

I feel like the score they got is not that bad or totally wrong. More and more people are not impressed what they see, or are just impressed with some part of the game but not in total like this they were a lot more in the first years of this gen.

Bioschock is releasing soon and I am totally not hyped for it while I was blown away with the first one and enjoyed the second one aswell...

I used to agree with most review scores but lately there have been more and more scores that i find myself disagreeing.

I used to simply check metacritic to see if a game is worth getting (as well as listening to what the game community and friends say about the game) but now I read/watch a few reviews from my favorite reviewers (Gametrailers, Gameinformer, IGN). Even though I don't agree with the scores from those reviewers very often, the reviews themselves I generally agree with; and I haven't been let down yet.
