Forums - Microsoft - My hands-on, unbiased Windows Phone 8 review

Well, from a specifications perspective no WP8 will match up with the Galaxy S4 because by the time it releases these phones will all be 6 months old which is a fairly long time in the mobile market. The WP9's when they release in the fall may be a different story. As far as actual performance goes, though, I don't know how you can really improve on nearly instant web page loading and perfectly smooth OS navigation. The only thing an 8 core processor is going to do for you at this point is eat up your battery faster which is why Samsung had to include a 2600 mAh battery in the S4. I don't think there are even any apps on Android, games included, that will utilize an 8 core processor. When designing games and apps for these phones you have to design them with the knowledge that many people who install them will be doing so on 1, 2 or even 3 year old phones so you simply cannot optimize the software for an 8 core monstrosity of a smartphone. I guess if you like having 10 apps running at once then the S4 will be useful to you, but other than that I don't see how it's going to show much of a performance improvement over any other high end device. Time will tell though. I hope it's as impressive as Samsung is making it out to be.

As far as mobile browsing on Chrome is concerned I'll gladly test it against the WP8 the first time I come across someone using it on the same network as me. I'm fairly certain my brother in law uses it on his S3 and I'm pretty sure he's on an LTE network as well so I'll test it with him asap.

The apps don't need to have any idea of the CPU on the phone. Its the OS level that handles all of that and since Android4, its been very aware of the multi-cores and there are major benefits. Now, there are also certain games made for certain things like Tegra devices, but that's a different story.

In general, you are right as it may not get fully useful unless you had a ton going on, but with all the live tiles and widgets in these respective ecosystems, a lot could be going on.

I'll definitely take a look when you compare to someone with Chrome browser on their phone. Beyond its responsivness, it has a ton of great features for tabs, incognito, sharing with Chrome desktop, etc.

Pretty good write up.

I'd be curious to see it compare to the new HTC One or SammyS4 or even my GNex. You'd obviously win on battery life, but with Chrome on these phones for browsing and a few other things matching up... I'd be curious to your opinion between them.

why is chrome relevant?

If you haven't used Chrome on Android vs the stock browser or really anything else available, then I can't really explain it to you. Basically I can't wait for Chrome to be Androids default browser. Its a million times better. Pretty much deskOS experience on a phone.

but this phone is a Windows phone... it has a very decent IE browser. Like all recent IE browsers its superb.

We were talking about comparisons among phones. I guess you missed that.

I had an HTC WP7 and with to a Nokia 820 WP8. It's the same as the 810. I was more impressed with the Nokia over the HTC than I thought it would be.

I would defiantly say try the Nokia one. It has a number of Nokia app that are really useful and I didn't expect them. Plus it has handled being dropped a few times with no problems.

And the 928 you are looking at is even nicer.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

I think the main problem at least for me is the lack of apps, as you mentioned. It simply doesn't compare to the app store and android store.

I agree there arent a ton of apps, but I have always been able to find an app that does what I need. I am a little disappointed that google doesnt have great windows 8 apps. But because of that I simply switched to skydrive, which honestly has great browser support and great phone support. I can edit documents online in skydrive and it uses the excel format. its great.

Everybody likes to take that name Unbiased Review now -_-

But in all honesty I have a copy of Windows 8 and i havent upgraded yet. Does anybody recommend me to upgrade or not?

To the OP.  I have a windows 7 phone and i love it :)  Havent used a W8 phone yet

Yes upgrade it. Windows 8 is better in every way to Windows 7 (unless you hate to learn new interfaces).

OT: That was a great review. I haven't used the W8P but I did have a W7P and it was fantastic. The biggest thing about the W7P for me was that you couldn't customize notifications so it's disappointing to see they haven't changed that (although the Galaxy SIII doesn't let you either so I got an app that changed that) Maybe there's an app on the W8P like that?
